Thread: Spam Comments
03-09-2013, 08:31 PM #1
I'm sure there are more threads about this (one at page 3, dead), but I wanted to raise some new awareness about the waves of spam comments the main site is getting. It's definitely getting worse, I think.
I was wondering if there was any way to counter this? Heck, if it's possible I'd gladly dedicate 5 minutes of my day to delete those comments, as I believe they spoil the experience for everyone.

Mod approval of accounts from non-free email services is (afaik) the only way to stem that issue. Spammers are always further up the bleeding edge of the conning arms race than the authorities.
If one wants the democratized comment playing field of anonymous comments and a popular website, the only thing one can do is jump into the cesspool (in which drowning is an inevitability).
There might have been a revolution in technological WordPress spam-circumvention, but I doubt it.

I see, makes sense.
I reckon we're all gonna end up earning around 60/70$ an hour. We could say it's an incredible story.

I'd love to earn that much from my home PC as well, but I can't really sit down for more than a few hours a day due to all the Viagra pills I got offered.- If the sound of Samuel Barber's "Adagio For Strings" makes you think of Kharak burning instead of the Vietnamese jungle, most of your youth happened during the 90s. -

Still waiting on the report feature for comments. It would be easier if all the reports went to an inbox and admins could just review them in 1 go rather than browsing through every news article.

Man, I can't wait until we all share our success stories! We'd be fools not to seize the marvelous opportunities that these people offer to us. c-Row can be forgiven though. I don't have time to sit either, after all the Hot Dates the Wondrous Internets have found me.
On a more pedestrian note, yeah, the report feature would be pretty much perfect.

In any case, it really takes a proactive moderator or community manager today to fight back against all these spammers.

It seems to be just the one type of spam (the my brother/cousin/aunt earns $70 a second ones) so I find it surprising that there isn't some form of automated way to deal with that.
Do we think it's spambots, or real human spammers getting paid $0.1 a comment?
I feel that the whole main site comment system could use an overhaul. I'm sure there are a number of plugins that do more advanced comments. I don't know if they increase server load or if there is some reason they don't use them.
The simple ability to report or downvote comments, and automatically hide those that are mass reported/downvoted would help a lot.
But there must be similar products that don't have those drawbacks.
