Patch 1.60 has hit steam, so the server should be updated by the time you read this.
To avoid having to download 2.6 gigs through steam's dying content servers, you can try the following:
- Download the patch manually from Arma2.co: http://www.arma2.com/index.php?optio...atch-1&lang=en there should be at least one fast mirror.
- Copy your arma2 folders from steamapps to a temp dir. This is your backup in case of emergency!
- Run the patcher.
- Verify game cache integrity.
No guarentees! *Probably works best if Steam hasn't started to download the new version already*.
E: Setting steam not to update just means it doesn't look for patches when you're not doing anything else. It'll still check when you try to launch the game. So it's good practice to have it set to not update, then you can try to use the workaround above.

Here's an easier to read link for the changelog on the BIStudio wiki. The link also contains a list of mirrors for the patch. The approach outlined by comrade Nullkigan above for updating the Steam version with the standalone patch was tested by a few people last night, and it seemed to work.
We played around for a while with the new version, and things seemed to work just fine. People were reporting a very nice FPS increase, and a lot of stuttering seems to be gone. All other mods in common use with the ARPS crowd seem to work except Okt_NoBlur which crashes the game on start: this thread has an updated version of Okt_NoBlur for OA 1.60 that you should be using.

OF COURSE it has to update the day i leave for the desolate solitude my parents call home.
don't have too much fun without me.
Also found this on reddit:
.50 cal gunners have the lowest life expectancy rate in the service. About 14 seconds is what I am told. Once you open up, the enemy wants you dead.

Tactical Tuesday starts tomorrow at 19:30 UK time. We've been getting 9-10 people even on Christmas/Boxing day, so hopefully we'll have enough for a couple of real squads in some larger missions!
New people eminently welcome, details in the first post or ask if anything is confusing.

So I'm one of those FNG's you keep hearing about. I gate crashed the ARPS server last night unannounced because I'm good like that....
A brief bio: been playing since OFP (or ArmA: Cold War Assault as the yoots call it nowadays) but the only things I've managed to learn in the last 10 years of playing BI games are 1) how to shoot wildly at enemies & 2) dying. So I assume I should fit in here quite well.
On a slightly more serious note it was great fun to play with the guys who were on the server, looking forward to getting some more games in with you fine gents.

Someone should really make some missions on the Isla Duala map, including all the African army gear etc.
Head, Ice and me played VTS on it and it's really a very nice looking map with lots of detail.

I'm also an Arma player and will pay a visit if there are enough players from here on the server .

Don't worry Scorpionbruno, in the Tatical-Tuesdays I've participated in so far there has been around 20 people or more.
So you won't have a shortage of friends (OR enemies if some TvT games are played)
As for me gents, I'm afraid I'll have to miss this week unfortunately I've got work to do and I've also neglected to update Arma so far...
Do hope you all enjoyed Christmas.
I will most likely be around on Steam however, should you want me for something (same name as here)

TacTues in 1h30.
Don't forget to connect to the mumble sever so you can hear the screaming about how unfair a mission designer I am (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/foru...-Mumble-server - you can ignore the fancy stuff like whispers).

Fairly low (12-14) turnout because of the holidays, but enough to get through a couple of missions. Thanks to everyone who turned up!
The missions were:
Ivory Hunt (glorious deaths!)
Force Ten (glorious deaths!)
Jolly Green (abandoned due to chopper pilot pc crash)
Ivory Hunt attempt #2 (victory)
Force Ten w/ Toys (turns out you can outrun bullets, but at some point they'll come from the front instead)

I hear there's been some crashing post-1.60. I had troubles myself, but switching from the default malloc implementation, tbb3malloc_bi, to tbb4malloc_bi seems to have fixed my troubles, so it's something to try at least. You do this by adding -malloc=tbb4malloc_bi or similar to your command line. I hear -malloc=system is pretty reliable too. The options, and details on the thing are on the BIS wiki page on custom memory allocators.

A few Folk announcements:
1. All good comrades are invited to the Folk session on Sunday 01 January 2012 (!) at 19:30 UK (details in the thread's OP). If you are new to ARPS please remember that you are also invited to the Folk sessions, and that competency is entirely optional.
2. If you have not already, please familiarise yourself with the Channel Commader feature of TS3. A very helpful guide is provided in the Getting started with TeamSpeak 3 (for ArmA2) thread on the Folk forum. Channel Commander is used on larger coop missions when we have high playercounts.
3. If you are a mission maker, and would like to contribute missions to the socialist agrarian revolution, you may want to re-visit the Writing missions for Folk thread on the Folk forum; it has been updated with links to some new templates.

Yeah we can do head here first - steam://friends/joinchat/103582791429554934
and look up in game clubs and you will see our shiney new sub-forum. Dwarden you can post lovely update threads and such in there too!

We do indeed have a subforum of our own now, wohoo! Don't be afraid to post stuff, that's what it's there for. We will be posting all sorts of info in the subforum sticky threads in the near future.
Also, we seem to have a nice influx of people from PCG and elsewhere, welcome aboard. To get an ad-hoc session going your best bet will be to holler around in the RPS Steam chat, as that's where a large portion of the ARPS crowd hangs out on a regular basis.
