There was a whole one-on-one gunfight scene set up for your character, who was specifically created to be awesome at gunfights because of the scene. It was meant to be your big moment, Egg.

Everyone up for more Wierd West shenanigans this Sunday? If we start on time we ought to get more than just one gun battle in, especially as we've got a better handle on the rules now.
However, it occurs to me nobody used the aim rules (+2 to hit if you declare an aim action and don't do anything else including moving) including me, despite having read it in the book beforehand. There's a lot to keep track of!

There's a few tacticool things you can do in fights aside from blamming and bashing, yeah. Aiming, and the intimidatory stylée that Jennings got into before getting blasted, are just a couple of 'em. Making folks shaken is especially handy as it can soak up their bennies or render 'em stuck

After action report 12th May
Previously on Deadlands: Blood Drive
Voodoo-tinged gangster capitalist railroad bastards 'The Bayou Vermilion Railroad Company' have been making Bill Sutter of the Lazy S Ranch an offer he can't refuse for his thousand-and-some head of cattle. He's been refusing, and hired on the party as additional hands for his planned cattle drive North. Bayou Vermilion's 'representative' Bartholomew Phelps and his gun-thug sidekicks ambushed the party when they accompanied Sutter's niece Miss Abigail into town for supplies; an epic gunfight ensued, leaving the party somewhat the worse for wear and Phelps and his gunmen dead in the dusty streets.
Sutter got his cattle drive under way the very next day, hoping to outpace Bayou Vermilion's vengeance. We join our party on the trail...
...three days out from the lazy S ranch and with no sign of trouble from Bayou Vermilion. Sutter and his right-hand man Luke Canton are scouting the trail, Micky Kannavagh, Miss Abby, and a handful of the Lazy S cowhands are out riding the perimeter of the herd.
Javier Ortega's cooking up dinner (it's beans; it's always beans) and the Lazy S cowhands and our heroes have just settled round the fire for the evening when Egg Shen suddenly gets an inkling that something's wrong. He's the only one who isn't caught completely flat-footed by the fusillade of gunshots that suddenly rips through the camp. Bayou Vermilion are back.
There's a bunch more gun-thugs, some of whom are busy stampeding the herd and the rest of whom have just got themselves into cover against a fenceline and are firing on the camp. Scattered amongst them are some other gunmen who are indefinably... different. Barely visible, shooting his rifle from some excellent cover behind a rock and some tree branches like a cowardly low down rattlesnake, is the renegade shaman Black Dog.
A couple of the Lazy S cowhands go down in the first burst of fire, and only a great deal of luck saves our heroes from a similar fate. The Lazy S forces are just gathering themselves to fight back when one of the cowboys really looks at one of the 'different' gunmen who are advancing on the camp and realises "Jesus God! They're walking dead men! They're god damned zombies!" Panic rips through the camp and most of the cowboys scramble away from the advancing dead men as fast as their legs can carry them. Most of the party are not immune, and something in Erasmus Jennings' mind snaps as he sees dead men striding towards him out of the sunset*.
All is not lost, however, as Jessie Odenkirk is clearly made or sterner (and/or drunker) stuff. He calls on his mysterious hexing powers and throws a card at the advancing group of zombies; there's a thunderous detonation and a flash of green light, and where there were three zombies advancing inexorably on the camp there's one corpse and several pieces. Jessie's slurred shout of "theshe bastards die like everybody else" rallies the Lazy S crew and a major gunfight ensues.
Things look bleak for our boys for a while before finally the few remaining gun thugs break and run, the last undead rail warrior takes a brutal shotgun blast to the head and Black Dog shapeshifts into a raven and disappears into the night. Two of the ten Lazy S cowboys are dead and another three are incapacitated and will need time to heal up before they can pull their weight again; Egg Shen took an impossibly accurate shot from the last walking dead man as he strode towards the party and ended the fight unconscious and brutally wounded, although luckily it looks like he's not going to lose the use of his arm.
The party ends the battle in possession of the field (and about a dozen six shooters and a handful of winchester rifles), and with Bayou Vermilion at least temporarily on the back foot. That's likely to be all the forces they had in the area, and it'll take them a while to ship in more.
It's still a long way to Fort Roswell though...
*Harlander, after seeing three walking dead men advancing towards you out of the setting sun you now have a minor phobia of sunsets and will take -2 to your rolls if you're in any kind of dangerous situation lit by the setting sun. (You're all right inside in the evening, unless that orange light that your broken mind associated with freakin' zombies everywhere man is streaming in through the windows).

Zombies? I think you will find that they were lepers, the heat does terrible things to them, after all there is no such thing as zombies.
I'm surprised that no one died to be honest, given how shot up we were after the last session and that you were lacking my eagle eye.
Sorry I missed last night, its probable that I will miss next week as well although I may be going back home next weekend so I may manage it but don't be surprised if I'm not there.

And it's true that by the time you get back to the party there are no walking dead walking around; all there are is corpses that look a bit dryer and deader than the others. They're not classical zombies anyway, lurching around rotting with bits missing, just walking dead men. That cowboy didn't really have the specialised vocabulary to describe them in the heat of the moment.

Great write-up PW. Although the whole evening was dedicated to just one big fight, it was a tense nail-biter of a session.
I think it worked well handing control of the friendly NPCs to the players, I would definitely suggest to continue doing that in the future.
I'm seriously glad I bennied my Guts roll now. Next time I might just do that on the Notice roll instead (2 of 2 fights I've been ambushed). I was totally expecting to get gunned down standing on that wagon after his fireworks show, but once again Jesse Odenkirk gets away without a scratch...

As well as keeping track of days for the purposes of healing my still rather grevious wounds, I'll need to keep track of hours elapsed for regaining my power points (it's 1 an hour)

I know you're getting XP and will eventually have better stats but I'm wondering if the setting rules are a little unfair; you've got to put points in Guts whereas people playing other Savage Worlds settings don't. Do you think everyone should get an extra point to make up for it a little?

I think it's fine for the moment, if it becomes a serious issue we could always give a bonus of some kind or even roleplay it.
I will probably miss this weekend as well. I was going to go home but the train fares are ridiculous (£80 for a 3 hour journey) so I'm just going to lurk in Birmingham again. The WiFI is actually working quite well at the moment for some reason so I do at least have some hope of managing Sunday night :)

I am happy with it as it stands, I imagine by the time we become seasoned types we'll be much more resilient and desensitised to it all (and feel like we earned that attitude).
