Have You Played… Hearthstone?

I bloody love Hearthstone. Every time a collectible card game comes out, people come together to agree that this one, absolutely, definitely, is The Hearthstone Killer. But it never is. The ease with which you can pick up Hearthstone and understand the basic mechanics, win conditions, and strategies makes it the most welcoming CCG for those new to the genre. Honestly though, the potential depth…

Hearthstone’s Madness At The Darkmoon Fair expansion opens its gates

Come one, come all, the Darkmoon Faire has returned to Hearthstone - and this time, it's all gotten a little "eldritch". Madness At The Darkmoon Fair has arrived for Blizzard's fantasy card-shuffler, adding a packed festival features 135 new cards, a corrosive new keyword, a brand new progression system, a bonkers new gamemode, and absolutely no unspeakable horrors from the darkest pits of Azeroth. None…

Hearthstone’s Battlegrounds mode is a weaponised jumble sale

"Right then," snarls a puce-faced ogre of a man, after drinking the last crumbs from a bag of roast beef Monster Munch, "the dog or the spoon?". And sure enough, there in front of him, on the battered plasterer's table that serves as his desk, is a blurrily-painted porcelain dog statuette, and a bent tablespoon. If you give the big man a quid, he'll throw…

Hearthstone’s Duels mode is like a bleak knife fight with an omnipotent clown

You're naked, in the desert, with a grubby carrier bag at your feet. "What's inside?" reads a note taped to it, in jaunty comic sans beneath a Hearthstone logo. You are just crouching to look, when you hear rustling. Ten paces away, an emaciated, dog-eyed wreck of a man is rummaging through a bag of his own, and you are struck with the sudden, brutal…

Hearthstone’s next expansion is Madness At The Darkmoon Faire, and adds PvP Dungeon Runs

The Old Gods bloody love the circus, apparently. For the final Hearthstone expansion of 2020, Blizzard are taking us way back to 2016, the last Worst Year Ever (in real life), when C'Thun, Yogg-Saron, and the eldritch squad first came to Hearthstone. Today they announced Madness At The Darkmoon Faire, arriving in November. Thankfully, Hearthstone was one of those constants I always went back to…

Fight your dad and befriend a bear in the new Hearthstone single player content

I was always fairly lukewarm on the lore behind Blizzard's Warcraft games, if I'm honest. It seemed to be a case of "all shoulderpads and no substance", and I couldn't get why it gripped people so much. But then I got into Hearthstone. For whatever reason, the card game's take on the Warcraftiverse, which somehow manages to ascend to an even higher plateau of camp…

Blizzard co-founder opens new studios with loads of ex-Blizzard folks

Mike Morhaime, the co-founder and former CEO of Blizzard, has opened a new video games venture with two studios stacked full of fellow ex-Blizzard folks. Dreamhaven is the company name, under which sit two studios, Moonshot Games and Secret Door. Open their doors and you'll find folks including longtime StarCraft II game director Dustin Browder and original Hearthstone game director Eric Dodds. What are they…

The 5 most fun decks in Hearthstone’s Scholomance Academy expansion

Colourful Blizzard card battler Hearthstone is now a week into its new expansion, Scholomance Academy, whose theme appears to be "Harry Potter, but there are orcs as well". As ever, the injection of a bunch of new cards into the game has shaken up the meta, and there's the usual frenzy of analysis going on to determine which classes and archetypes are going to be…

Blizzard confirms BlizzCon will be a digital event next year

Blizzard have confirmed that they’ll be hosting BlizzCon as an online event due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The annual celebration of their games and communities was cancelled this year, with a suggestion that they’ll be holding it virtually in 2021. During a recent earnings call, Blizzard’s president J. Allen Brack confirmed that it will be happening “early 2021”.

Hearthstone: Scholomance Academy expansion will introduce dual-class cards

The next Hearthstone expansion will take players to the wizard school of Scholomance Academy, Blizzard announced last night. The 135-card expansion will introduce 40 cards that can be used by two classes, reflecting the school's multidisciplinary curriculum, including 10 representing the dual-class disciplines' Legendary professors. The new Spellburst keyword is coming too, and a new Studies card type. Also, the school has just a load…

Hearthstone’s Felfire event is like Fury Road with devils, and it’s great fun

It seems it's a summer for demons and big metal vehicles. First, Monster Train steamed into the hearts of digital card game aficionados with its tale of high-speed satans, and now good old Hearthstone is at it as well. While its new Felfire Festival event can't technically be called an expansion as it doesn't come with a new set of cards, it's seen a new…

Very silly Hearthstone decks: The Fist Of Sadness

The Hearthstone meta has been a bit of a mess recently. The new Demon Hunter class smashed through the entire game like a massive concrete dog through wet tissue, and although two balance patches were swiftly applied to rein in the madness, I'm gonna be honest and say I'm not entirely certain what's going on now in terms of the best decks to use. But…

Hearthstone has already nerfed Demon Hunters

Illidan Stormrage should have learned that drinking from the skull of Gul'dan riles up the whole world of Warcraft and makes them regret releasing him from wizard jail, but now he's done it again in Hearthstone. The Demon Hunter class arrived Tuesday in Blizzard's card game, the first new playable class since launch six years ago, and already they've needed to hastily nerf him. Yes,…

Blizzard locked me in a personal hell with Hearthstone’s Demon Hunter, and it was great

Hearthstone's new Ashes Of Outland expansion is out this evening, and having spent a couple of days last week playing with the new card set, I can confirm it's really, really fun. Completely ridiculous, as is increasingly the case with Hearthstone, but undoubtedly a solid expansion - and in my opinion at least, more fun than any of last year's three.Obviously, the headline addition to…

Hearthstone’s Demon Hunter class has arrived with a wee free story

Blizzard have added Hearthstone's first new playable class since the game launched six years ago, the scowling Demon Hunter. That's a whole new set of cards with whole new tricks, not to mention a whole lot of growling. Illidan Stormrage is the first Demon Hunter hero, and today you can unlock the class and its starter deck by playing through a short free story campaign…

Hearthstone is adding a new Demon Hunter class in April

A new class for Hearthstone? They said it couldn't be done! But as the game's new Year Of The Phoenix begins in April, they, whoever they are, will be proved wrong with the debut of the new Demon Hunter class. It's fronted by good old Illidan "u are not prepared" Stormrage, and will be free for all players. He'll arrive just ahead of the next…

An egg-hatched moustache man is crucial to Hearthstone now, and I might be losing my mind

Perhaps understandably, given that it's my job to attempt to stay up to date with PC games these days, I don't get to play all my favourites with quite the same regularity. Usually, that's fine - Civilization VI, for example, is always gonna be Civilization VI. Sometimes, it's even a bit of a boon - I'll return to something like Rimworld after a few months…

5 near-certain predictions for Hearthstone

There's big news in the draw pile for Hearthstone, apparently. The collectible card game's three-a-year expansion cycle tends to run from April to April, and if last year's timings are anything to go by, we can expect a reveal of the next year's theme, plus an idea of upcoming content, in the next week or so. What's making this a bigger deal than usual is…

Hearthstone solo adventure Galakrond’s Awakening awakes today

I'm a big fan of fantasy names that sound like someone choking. Ghisteslwchlohm. Zeddicus. Tolo Ogule Thermalamerkanerat. The first chapter of Hearthstone's new adventure, Galakrond's Awakening, is out today, with a story following on from the last couple of solo adventures. As usual, you fight a series of singleplayer matches against bosses with game-shaping powers. Less usual is how you get to play as either…
