Blizzard’s statement on Blitzchung’s ban digs them deeper [Updated]

Update: Blitzchung has responded with a statement of his own. Details below. Blizzard Entertainment have, after several days of silence, released a statement about this week’s chaos. It all began when they, by their admission, “reacted too quickly” to pro Hearthstone player Chung “Blitzchung” Ng Wai saying “Liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our times!” during a post-match interview. It has escalated since then, with casters…

Veteran Hearthstone commentator quits Grandmasters over ban

A veteran Hearthstone player and commentator is pulling away from Blizzard after they banned pro player Chung "Blitzchung" Ng Wai for voicing support of Hong Kong's pro-autonomy protests in a post-match interview. Brian Kibler has commentated several official Blizzard tournaments but now he's pulling out of casting this year's Hearthstone Grandmasters finals at BlizzCon. "I will not be a smiling face on camera that tacitly…

Blizzard staff held an umbrella protest for banned Hearthstone pro

A number of Blizzard employees seem to be protesting the company's decision to ban a professional Hearthstone player for voicing his support of Hong Kong's ongoing pro-autonomy protests. Some have reportedly covered up two of the company's supposed core values that are cast in bronze in a sculpture outside their headquarters, "Think Globally" and "Every Voice Matters". It seems more later gathered in support at…

Hearthstone’s Doom In The Tomb event unearths a whole lotta evil today

Oooh, it's the season of spooks and scares in Hearthstone once again. What's that behind the curtain? Some sort of ghost, perhaps a ghoul? No, dear reader, it's the Headless Horseman bearing the most terrifying spell of all - unbalanced playing cards! Hearthstone's diving into the Haunted Temple of Uldum, forcing an uneasy alliance between the goody-two-shoes of the League of Explorers and the comically…

Blizzard ban pro Hearthstone player over support of Hong Kong protests

Blizzard have temporarily banned Hearthstone pro Chung "Blitzchung" Ng Wai for saying "liberate Hong Kong, revolution of our age!" during a post-match interview, expressing his support of the Hong Kong protests. This happened last Sunday, during the Hearthstone Grandmasters tournament. In addition to removal from the rest of the tournament and a one year ban, Blizzard will not pay out the prize money Blitzchung is…

Hearthstone brings back 23 Wild cards alongside a spooky seasonal event

“When cards show up too frequently in decks and are considered auto-includes, deck-building becomes more limited…Dozens of cards in the seven to nine mana range never saw play because Ragnaros was always the easy choice in that range, and some decks only want to run one high cost card,” wrote Hearthstone’s developers back in 2017 as they shifted the poor Firelord out of Standard play…

Hearthstone opens the Tombs Of Terror on September 17th

Blizzard have announced they plan to crack open a cold one (a tomb) with the boys (the League Of Explorers) on September 17th with the launch of Hearthstone's next singleplayer adventure, the Tombs Of Terror. As is the way of Adventures, it'll send us through a gauntlet of battles and building our deck with new cards and new powers along the way. This time, it's…

Hearthstone: Uldum quests ranked by fun

After each new Hearthstone expansion lands, there’s a golden period where mediocre players like me get to play with all the big, fun, silly new cards. It never lasts forever: before long, the good decks become known, and we must all netdeck away under the ghastly lash of The Meta, or fade away into the Elysian fields of PvE. But for a short while at…

Hearthstone: Saviors Of Uldum goes full Indiana Jones

Hearthstone's Saviors Of Uldum expansion is now live, as Blizzard promised last month by way of a full minute-long rendition of I Need A Hero. The update is bringing back the League of Explorers for a second time, with the adventure crew heading to Egypt to fight villainy as part of year-long story arc that Blizzard are planning.

Hearthstone: Saviors Of Uldum makes me wish World Of Warcraft was as silly

Has it really been three months since the last Hearthstone expansion? It feels like it was days ago. The next expansion for Blizzard's popular CCG will be Saviours Of Uldum, due on August 6th, and it looks like they're doubling down on the Saturday morning cartoon antics of Rise Of Shadows. They're unearthing the League Of Explorers from the now-defunct adventure and making them the…

World Of Warcraft’s infamous pandemic is causing tense moments in Hearthstone esports

World Of Warcraft’s “Corrupted Blood incident” swept through the game over a decade ago. A debuff inflicted by an end boss, Hakkar The Soulflayer, wasn’t supposed to leave the raid area, but was accidentally carried by pets throughout Azeroth, causing a pandemic and ensuing panic that emptied out towns, killed low-level characters, and was eventually studied by epidemiologists to see how people might react to…

Steal a city in the first free episode of The Dalaran Heist Hearthstone adventure

My days by the Hearthstone are mostly long behind me, but every now and then I get lured back by something shiny. That's happened with The Dalaran Heist, a Solo Adventure released yesterday as part of the Rise Of Shadows expansion. It's about beating up gnomes and beleaguered zombie bureaucrats in an attempt to steal the floating city of Dalaran, and the first chunk is…

Micro transactions in Hearthstone: the last word

This article is not about microtransactions (that is, buying virtual products with small payments) within the game of Hearthstone. It is, in fact, an article about micro transactions; specifically, it's about how the various characters from Hearthstone would react to the initiation of transactions involving very small amounts of money, according to me and my mate Trevar. Micro transactions in the real world are situations…

Hearthstone’s deck builder is struggling to adapt to the game’s new rotation

Every two years, a mass of Hearthstone cards are relegated from standard play, sent away to the much less popular, anything goes Wild format. At the same time, more cards are introduced (though fewer). This is good for keeping the game fresh and relatively uncomplicated, and for onboarding new players who can’t learn years and years' worth of cards at once. It’s not so good,…

Hearthstone – Rise of Shadows guide

Rise of Shadows will be Hearthstone's first expansion of 2019, and now that it's launched it has split the game's hero roster into two very distinct warring factions. On one side is the League of EVIL, a devious collection of ne'er-do-wells who are cooking up catastrophe for the ancient Warcraft city of Dalaran.

Hearthstone launches the supervillainous Rise Of Shadows expansion

Blizzard's popular free-to-play CCG Hearthstone has rolled out its eleventh expansion today, Rise Of Shadows. Tapping into the current wave of superhero movie buzz, the theme of this expansion is cape-swooshing, moustache-twirling cartoon supervillainy, complete with expendable lackeys, evil schemes and do-gooders to bully. As usual there's 135 new cards to collect, including some fun new keywords like Twinspell, Lackey-summoning minions and self-upgrading Schemes that…

Hearthstone’s new deck builder makes the most of incomplete card collections

One of the updates for Hearthstone’s Year Of The Dragon has hatched early, bringing a new and improved deck builder to Blizzard’s collectable card game. Previously, the auto-complete feature technically could slot cards into an incomplete deck, or even make one from scratch, but it seemed to take little into account besides mana cost, often making nonsensical or simply weak suggestions. Now, though, it uses…

Hearthstone: Rise Of Shadows deals the bad guys in this April

Moustache-twirling cartoon supervillainy is the theme of Hearthstone's next expansion, Rise Of Shadows. Five big bads from previous expansions have formed an alliance, and rather unimaginatively called themselves the League of E.V.I.L. Schemes, lackeys and callbacks to previous expansions abound, plus a few new heroic types to counter their monster-of-the-week plans. Below, an announcement info-dump trailer, plus the obligatory musical sing-along intro to the new…

Hearthstone’s Year of the Dragon is coming in hot

The Year of the Dragon is sweeping into Blizzard’s collectable card game Hearthstone, burning up the previous Year of the Raven and bringing with it a whole lot of changes. Here’s creative director Ben Thomson and new executive producer Chris Sigaty giving the bullet points: a story running across all three expansions; new solo content; and hints towards a whole bunch of meta changing card…

Hearthstone is making ranking up less time consuming

Blizzard have announced that they’ll be tweaking the ranking system for collectable card game Hearthstone next month, making climbing the ladder a slightly less grindy experience. Beginning on February 1st, players at most levels will only need to gain three stars by winning games in order to advance a rank, reduced from its current five.
