World Of Warcraft’s infamous pandemic is causing tense moments in Hearthstone esports

World Of Warcraft’s “Corrupted Blood incident” swept through the game over a decade ago. A debuff inflicted by an end boss, Hakkar The Soulflayer, wasn’t supposed to leave the raid area, but was accidentally carried by pets throughout Azeroth, causing a pandemic and ensuing panic that emptied out towns, killed low-level characters, and was eventually studied by epidemiologists to see how people might react to…

Steal a city in the first free episode of The Dalaran Heist Hearthstone adventure

My days by the Hearthstone are mostly long behind me, but every now and then I get lured back by something shiny. That's happened with The Dalaran Heist, a Solo Adventure released yesterday as part of the Rise Of Shadows expansion. It's about beating up gnomes and beleaguered zombie bureaucrats in an attempt to steal the floating city of Dalaran, and the first chunk is…

Micro transactions in Hearthstone: the last word

This article is not about microtransactions (that is, buying virtual products with small payments) within the game of Hearthstone. It is, in fact, an article about micro transactions; specifically, it's about how the various characters from Hearthstone would react to the initiation of transactions involving very small amounts of money, according to me and my mate Trevar. Micro transactions in the real world are situations…

Hearthstone’s deck builder is struggling to adapt to the game’s new rotation

Every two years, a mass of Hearthstone cards are relegated from standard play, sent away to the much less popular, anything goes Wild format. At the same time, more cards are introduced (though fewer). This is good for keeping the game fresh and relatively uncomplicated, and for onboarding new players who can’t learn years and years' worth of cards at once. It’s not so good,…

Hearthstone – Rise of Shadows guide

Rise of Shadows will be Hearthstone's first expansion of 2019, and now that it's launched it has split the game's hero roster into two very distinct warring factions. On one side is the League of EVIL, a devious collection of ne'er-do-wells who are cooking up catastrophe for the ancient Warcraft city of Dalaran.

Hearthstone launches the supervillainous Rise Of Shadows expansion

Blizzard's popular free-to-play CCG Hearthstone has rolled out its eleventh expansion today, Rise Of Shadows. Tapping into the current wave of superhero movie buzz, the theme of this expansion is cape-swooshing, moustache-twirling cartoon supervillainy, complete with expendable lackeys, evil schemes and do-gooders to bully. As usual there's 135 new cards to collect, including some fun new keywords like Twinspell, Lackey-summoning minions and self-upgrading Schemes that…

Hearthstone’s new deck builder makes the most of incomplete card collections

One of the updates for Hearthstone’s Year Of The Dragon has hatched early, bringing a new and improved deck builder to Blizzard’s collectable card game. Previously, the auto-complete feature technically could slot cards into an incomplete deck, or even make one from scratch, but it seemed to take little into account besides mana cost, often making nonsensical or simply weak suggestions. Now, though, it uses…

Hearthstone: Rise Of Shadows deals the bad guys in this April

Moustache-twirling cartoon supervillainy is the theme of Hearthstone's next expansion, Rise Of Shadows. Five big bads from previous expansions have formed an alliance, and rather unimaginatively called themselves the League of E.V.I.L. Schemes, lackeys and callbacks to previous expansions abound, plus a few new heroic types to counter their monster-of-the-week plans. Below, an announcement info-dump trailer, plus the obligatory musical sing-along intro to the new…

Hearthstone’s Year of the Dragon is coming in hot

The Year of the Dragon is sweeping into Blizzard’s collectable card game Hearthstone, burning up the previous Year of the Raven and bringing with it a whole lot of changes. Here’s creative director Ben Thomson and new executive producer Chris Sigaty giving the bullet points: a story running across all three expansions; new solo content; and hints towards a whole bunch of meta changing card…

Hearthstone is making ranking up less time consuming

Blizzard have announced that they’ll be tweaking the ranking system for collectable card game Hearthstone next month, making climbing the ladder a slightly less grindy experience. Beginning on February 1st, players at most levels will only need to gain three stars by winning games in order to advance a rank, reduced from its current five.

Hearthstone’s troll-packed Rastakhan’s Rumble expansion is live

Start working on your questionable faux-Jamaican accent, because Hearthstone is hamming it up like it's the nineties in its latest expansion today. Rastakhan's Rumble is themed around a once-in-a-lifetime arena brawl to decide the next great troll champion. This means new cards, a new keyword (Overkill!), wrestling jokes, sketchy invocations of voodoo, dinosaurs, ticket scalpers and ice cream. All the cartoon nonsense that defines Warcraft's…

Hearthstone: Rastakhan’s Rumble cards now all revealed

Blizzard have finished revealing the 135 new cards coming to Hearthstone next week in its new expansion, Rastakhan's Rumble. Hearthstoners, you may begin your theorycrafting and deck plans in earnest. I always used to enjoy this launch period in Magic: The Gathering, when I'd try to figure out what could fit into my favourite existing decks and what could be the foundation of whole new…

Feature: A tribe called Trolls

Hearthstone: Rastakhan’s Rumble guide

The next Hearthstone expansion was announced at BlizzCon earlier this month. Titled Rastakhan's Rumble, it'll add another 135 new cards to the game, a new Shaman hero called King Rastakhan, and a new single-player mode called Rumble Run. The theme this time around is on the Troll tribe - a long-awaited direction for the game, and one that also ties in quite neatly with events…

Hearthstone giving away free packs to celebrate hitting 100 million players

BlizzCon may be over but the the Blizzard blast has juuust a little longer to go. Blizzard announced last night that Hearthstone has hit 100 million players, see. Who cares about cooing over big numbers? Not me. But who cares about getting free bonus packs of cards for the free-to-play card 'em up? Ah, maybe it's you. Tomorrow, Blizzard plan to give all players six…

Rastakhan’s Rumble takes Hearthstone trolling in a new expansion

Hearthstone's next expansion is putting on its best faux-Jamaican accent for a big blue throwdown. Launching in December and unveiled at BlizzCon today, Rastakhan's Rumble tells the story (through the act of card-battling) of a once-in-a-generation tribal contest. Trolls from around Azeroth are assembling to beat each other black and (more) blue in order to impress the Loa spirits and King Rastakhan in a big…

Pro Hearthstone player burns key card with perfect comedic timing

Sometimes, in Hearthstone, your entire deck hinges on a single card. Also sometimes, you can overdraw, causing those cards to be burned away. And, once in a while, you burn your key card on stage in a championship decider match, right after the production crew cuts to signs in the crowd predicting that you’ll do exactly that. Be warned, I’m going to spoil the moment…

Chinese Taipei disqualified from Hearthstone Global Games

Chinese Taipei was officially disqualified from Hearthstone’s Global Games yesterday, after it emerged that some of their members were ‘stream sniping’ - watching the broadcast of the event in order to gain an advantage over their opponents. In the wake of the announcement, fans are questioning how easy the practice may be to pull off, and whether more measures should be taken to prevent it.

Some surprising decks appeared at Hearthstone’s European tournament playoffs

Blizzard’s competitive card game Hearthstone has had plenty of unpopular decks in its time, but few come close to touching Quest Rogue and Shudderwock Shaman. The good news was, supposedly, that the former has been nerfed into oblivion and the latter was only ever a joke that couldn’t be considered competitively viable. And yet both are currently seeing play in the currently ongoing European tournament…

Hearthstone’s volatile single-player Puzzle Lab mode is out now

Hearthstone's Boomsday Project expansion introduced a whole new world of chaos to the unpredictable free-to-play card game. A multitude of game-changing (or wrecking) cards with scattershot and explosive effects have definitely refreshed the game a bit, but those wanting to take things slow and poke around the new systems at their own pace might have been left a little cold. The Puzzle Lab, launched today,…
