Feature: Bottled ants

Game DNA: growing order from chaos

The summer of 1991 was all about ants. I was seven years old, and I spent the entire school holiday camped in the garden, gently catching winged queens and housing them in shitty coke bottle formicariums. There I would watch them lay eggs and create workers, who would dig tunnels, search about the place, and scurry in lines with grains of food in their jaws.…

Feature: "Ask the hard questions"

Meet the geographer who tells studios when they’re ignorant and offensive

We hear a lot about level designers in games. Voice actors, concept artists, big directors. Kate Edwards is none of those things. She is a geographer. It seems like an odd job for the games industry, but the more you learn about her work, the more it feels essential. Edwards is hired by studios to cast her geo-eye over the shuffling NPCs of sci-fi space…

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition is out now

In another time and place, Age of Empires: Definitive Edition would be the easiest game to recommend. A lovingly crafted, highly polished update of a truly classic RTS, putting Blizzard's recent efforts to polish up Starcraft to shame. Boasting proper 4k art, a smoothly zoomable camera and major interface enhancements, it looks like an excellent upgrade. Unfortunately, this just seems an ill-timed and ill-positioned launch.…

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition enters the Ultra HD era this February

The quiet success of Age of Empires II HD was a reminder that while they've fallen out of vogue somewhat, there's an audience hungry for the twitchy-yet-cerebral thrills of the classic RTS genre. A revamp of the first game was due to follow that last year until it hit a last-minute delay, but now I'm happy to say that Age of Empires: Definitive Edition has both a release date…

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition delayed into 2018

Happy birthday, Age of Empires! The historical real-time strategy series turned 20 on Sunday, and the party was supposed to keep on rolling through to Thursday and the launch of launch of Age of Empires: Definitive Edition [official site]. Alas, the revamped and prettied-up release of the first game has been delayed at short notice. It's now expected in "early 2018". Sounds like one hold-up…

Humble Jumbo Bundle 2 Is Great: GalCiv 2, CK2, Terraria…

Humble Bundle are always going to be of varying quality - sometimes including only a single quality game with some bonuses, sometimes of no interest whatsoever - but the latest, titled Jumbo Bundle 2, is quite the bargain. For the low, low price of whatever-the-hell-you'd-like you'll get space 4X Galactic Civilizations II with its expansions, side-scrolling undead violence-applier Deadlight and isometric action RPG The Incredible…

Ageing: Age Of Empires Online Dev Diary

In case you weren't aware, Age of Empires Online is shaping up to be a deeply different kettle of papyrus from the original Age of Empires games. That should be made clear by the following dev diary, explaining how MMORPG-style loot and equipment work in the game, as well as where you'll be getting it from and how you can trade it with your lovely…

Age Of Empires Online Online In Autumn

Just a morning quickie for you, dearie. Microsoft's free to play, levelling up-based resurrection of its mysteriously-killed RTS franchise Age of Empires now bears a more-or-less release date, and that is this Autumn, or Tumble, or whatever it is that the colonies insist on calling it. The Gas Powered Games co-developed Age of Empires Online is a free to play jobbie, funded by paid-for DLC…

Ensemble Disassembled

The Age of Empires it over, it seems. This is a bit of a shock, but news has broke - and been confirmed - that once they've shipped the forthcoming 360 RTS Halo Wars Ensemble Studios will close its doors. Microsoft Game Studios have confirmed this with a statement... Microsoft has decided to close Ensemble Studios following the completion of Halo Wars. After the closure,…

Review: Age of Empires III, now with added Asians

Ever-lovely Eurogamer have stuck up my review of the latest Age of Empires 3 add-on, the Asian Dynasties. It's an expansion pack for an RTS not many people liked all that much, so I'm not expecting a flood of readers, but hey, maybe there'll be 12,000 comments by the end of the day and I'll be proven wrong. Most pertinently, this expansion is made by…

Age of Empires Now Even Ageier

I didn't really get on with Age of Empires III - pettily, I was turned off by its fonts - so wasn't paying huge attention to the second add-on pack. Then three things happened which changed my mind. Firstly, they released a demo of it. I'm always interested in free stuff. Secondly, Tom Chick got excited about it. When it comes to anything to do…
