Old Battlefield games re-killed after EA’s legal warning

All good things must end, and all that we love will turn to ash some day. The fan-run Revive Network, a community project to support and restore online play to several defunct EA games (including Battlefield 2, Battlefield 2142, and most recently Battlefield Heroes) is closing its doors after receiving a warning letter from the monolithic publisher. They had a good run of 3 years…

Battlefield Bye Bye Bye: EA Closing Four F2P Games

We received a report from the eerie ghost world of EA's free-to-play MMO drive 'em up Need for Speed World only last week. Its streets lay empty, making the twilight world a spooky haunted house of a city. And then... a car appeared. Oh, how much I'd like to have told young Jack "But Jack, NFSW closed down on this very day three years ago"…

Battlefield Heroes’ Cartoon Lunacy

I thought Battlefield Heroes already had maps set on the moon. It seems like the kind of zany adventure the warring cartoons would be keen to partake in but it turns out this is their first time off-planet. There have been robots, festive firefights, halloween horrors and plenty of other additions deserving of the descriptors 'oddball' and 'wacky'. And now it's the turn of the…

Battlefield Heroes Does The Robot

Battlefield Heroes has always felt like the poor man's TF2. But it keeps on fighting on, and today has just added the option to play as a robot. Accompanying this comes a new video, explaining the story behind this. Dr. Doktor (wacky!) is determined to beat the Royals by bringing in a robotic army, after winning the gold medal for cycling at the Olympics... Huh?

Battlefield Heroes Is All About The Giving

Battlefield Heroes players must have been good boys and girls this year, because they are apparently all going to get presents from EA this month. The gifts come in the form of free stuff on their rewards page, and there are two things already in there. Having logged in I can confirmed that the first two days are Santa outfit the Royals and a "St…

Flagging Behind: Battlefield Heroes

It's not a real war unless there are flags involved. How else would we keep score, or fully understand who is in charge? Thankfully, Battlefield Heroes now has a capture the flag mode. Admittedly, I did have to check the date on this several times to make sure capture the flag wasn't actually added in 1842, but it really was added just now. No doubt…

Battlefield Heroes’ Summer Super Stuff

Picking itself up and dusting itself off from a rude, if mild, hacking, Battlefield Heroes reveals its intentions to make summer a little snazzier for its players with new stuff. NEW STUFF! God, I hate old stuff. It's so rubbish. Heroes' new stuff includes pirate and wizard outfits for you to prance about in as you kill World War Analogy enemies in EA's artfully cartoon…

Feature: Hackers finished, gamers hacked off

LulzSec Over, Release Battlefield Heroes Data

LulzSec, the hacker group who have claimed responsibility for many of the high profile attacks on gaming companies, publishers, and even the CIA, have declared their work is done, their time is up, and they're off. Apparently it was always intended to be a 50 day voyage aboard their Lulzboat, and it has come to an end. They believe they have revitalised the Antisec Movement,…

Ben Cousins Talks Battlefield Play4Free

Electronic Arts are making some serious progress into the sphere of free-to-play games, and it's interesting to watch this established and old school mainstream publisher gear up to explore that fresh frontier. One of EA's pioneers heading off into that great unknown is Ben Cousins, who is the general manager of EA's free-to-play branch, Easy Studios. I talked to him about Battlefield Play4Free. Battleforge, and…

EA’s Cousins: $60 Games “Exploitative”

Later today we'll publish an interview with Ben Cousins, who is the general manager of EA’s free-to-play branch, Easy Studios. In it he has some interesting and provocative things to say about current game models, as well as talking about the imminent launch of Battlefield Play4Free. When discussing the controversies surrounding various free-to-play payment models, he made this observation about the traditional full-priced game market:…

Bangin’: Battlefield Heroes Hit 7 Million Users

News bugle VG24/7 reports that Battlefield Heroes, EA's free to play spin-off of the Battlefield franchise has just hit 7 million registered users. With the game coming out 19 months ago, that's an average of 368,421 new users each month, which is even more than Kieron's mum. Of course, free-to-play games always achieve ludicrous user numbers, but even so this is noteworthy. Read Jim's aging…

Battlefield Heroes V2 Mode

There's a new game mode arrived for free-to-play cartoon shooter, Battlefield Heroes. It's live on a new night-time map. EA says: In this fast paced game mode you and your allies must capture and hold the rocket and keep it from enemy hands. Jump in with gusto or rocket fuel and make sure your enemies do not get the upper hand and claim the rocket…

Vampires Vs Werewolves in BFH

So here's a thing: Werewolves and Vampires are being added to free FPS Battlefield Heroes. It's some kind of micro-payment event, lasting a month, where you can pay to be able to rise again in the night maps of the game. "Once-dead Nationals can be transformed into blood-sucking vampires and Royals into teeth bearing werewolves." Okay then. A trailer, below, explains a bit more.

Eurogamer Battlefield Heroes Review

As I mentioned in our recent podcast, I've been spending quite a bit of time in Battlefield Heroes, and I ended up doing a review over at Eurogamer. I say: This free Battlefield game comes with two complimentary kneejerk responses. "Hey, this is nothing like proper grown-up Battlefield!" is one of them. "Cartoon? Team Fortress 2 is cartoon, therefore grumble-mumble!" is the other. Neither are…

Battlefield Heroes Beta Bounces Back

After going very, very quiet for a few months, EA and DICE are reopening the Battlefield Heroes closed beta today. Which means if you already had a key, you'll be able to get back into the new and improved version of the game when you receive an email. Should you not have a beta key, you can still get in line, with DICE planning to…

Return of The Battefield Heroes Beta

That's right, the free-to-play cartoon shooter from Digital Illusions is not dead, and is now taking beta sign ups again. You can sign up here. There's no word on the start date to this new phase of testing, but it should hopefully have benefited from the intervening months of back end fiddling that the devs have been doing since the last session. I'll be genuinely…

Battlefield Heroes: Victory Village Trailer

I think this is the first time we've seen this particular Battlefield Heroes map, as it's far more enclosed that the environments we've seen previously. This splendid trailer also shows off loads of the character adornments and costumes - in some cases far more wacky than I'd expected, but fun nonetheless. Still no word on that open beta... If there is one. Keep an eye…

Battlefield Heroes Footage, Limited Beta

The main Battlefield Heroes site has started running contests for a limited number of beta keys. They gave away 400 last night, and there's more to come. The rumour in the mill is that a large scale beta should be turning up very soon indeed. After the jump we have several minutes of Heroes footage, which starts off fairly slowly - try to imagine it…
