A fan-made enhanced edition of Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya's seminal indie platformer Cave Story has been slapped with a DMCA takedown. Publishers Nicalis have accused Cave Story Engine 2 of using code stolen from the original game's source - code that they, as developers of Cave Story +, own. But while fears that the publisher planned to wipe all free versions of the game off the…

I settled a 'Dracula vs. Frankenstein' debate the other day by referring to the authority on power rankings: Top Trumps cards, where Dracula trounces Frankenstein. Granted the debate was about the books rather than a monsterfight, but it's still fun to throw fictional folks together to see who'd win a rumble. Enter Blade Strangers, a crossover fighting game released today. Along with pugilists from previous…

As an avid The Binding Of Isaac player and a fan of absurd disparity in fighting game crossovers, I'm delighted to hear that Isaac has joined the cast of Blade Strangers. Isaac, a murdered child who in his native roguelikelike top-down shooter fights sentient poos by crying on them, will face a roster of heavily-armed crossover characters including Quote, the warbot hero of Cave Story.…

The Metroidvania is perhaps one of the more tricky genres to nail down. With its very name coming from an amalgamation of two actually quite different Nintendo-based game series - Metroid and Castlevania - quite what qualifies is always up for debate. Hence, we suspect this could be one of the more controversial lists, when it leaves out a favourite game that someone else might…

Although initially released on PCs and mobile cellular telephones last year, Daisuke 'Cave Story' Amaya's Kero Blaster [official site] has now hopped onto Steam. That's right, hopped. Because there's a frog in it. What at first might strike the eye as just another two dimensional pixel platformer is actually an enjoyable, engaging and challenging throwback to when the genre reigned supreme. Jump inside (mwahaha) for…

Another pixelated retro action-platformer? I know, I know. But this one has a frog! Also, Kero Blaster is kinda the latest tadpole offspring from indie legend Cave Story's design/writing/sound/everything wizard, Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya, and it looks like a rather sumptuous offering in its simplicity. It's leaping jetpacking into action - as frogs are wont to do - next month, and you can see a trailer below.

Details of the next Humble Indie Bundle have once more leaked, because Steam's Content Description Record Viewer Thingamie is so ludicrously easy for people to spy. And it looks like it's going to be a bit of a corker, as spotted by DIY Gamer. In the pay-what-you-want collection it seems there will be Super Meat Boy, BIT.TRIP.RUNNER, Jamestown, Nightsky and Shank. That's the first wave,…
Every time a new indie bundle is released, anguished cries echo around the Great Hall of Comments that is carved in the dark obsidian which forms the foundations of Castle RPS. The reason? The inhabitants of that grand place are often the proud owners of every game included in the bundle due to their uncanny ability to be ahead of the curve. Therefore, it is…
