Have You Played… Crysis 2?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day, perhaps for all time. Everything that Crysis 1 did right, Crysis 2 threw away. Combat scenarios set in open areas you could approach your own way? Gone. Destructible buildings and AI smart enough to navigate it? Gone. Unique, jungle setting? Gone. The resulting game is poorer in every conceivable way.

Crysis 2 Is Back On Steam, But EA’s Not – For Now

Remember when Valve and EA didn't see eye-to-eye last year over certain portions of Steam's terms of service? First Crysis 2 managed to flub its camo and make a very loud exist from the download empire's hallowed halls, and then Dragon Age 2 was like "Haha, guys, wasn't that wild? Well, at least you still have me. Wait, never mind. Bye forever." Speculation pinned the…

Crytek On Fusing Crysis 1, Crysis 2, And District 9

Many people set their furrowed brows to maximum anger (known in some places as a warface) and rallied against Crysis 2. I wasn't one of them. It was, in many ways, a far more directed experience than Crysis 1, but it was still far from being Modern Warfare in a snazzy pair of robo-pants. That said, when word got out that Crysis 3 was aiming…

The Newest Shiny-Shines Of CryENGINE 3

Yesterday brought official word that a profitable videogame would see a follow-up. Surprise! But while we got to ogle a few Crysis 3 screenshots, we didn't get to see it in motion. We still don't, because life is harsh and cruel and that's a lesson that we all need to learn at some point. Now go to bed without having any dinner. Once you wake…

Crysis 3 Confirmed, Is Crystal Maze-y

Here is a poorly-kept secret: I'm not a very tall man. Here is another one: Crysis 3 is happening. Even before evidence turned up last week, a fourth nanosuited adventure seemed something of a given, but it's taken the EA-Crytek announcengine this long to formally confirm the next game. I've just played Press Release Bingo and I've got a "stunning", a "state of the art",…

The Midlife Of Crysis – Crytek’s Third En Route?

While struggling to think up a headline pun to accompany the unsurprising news that there's almost certainly going to be a third (well, fourth technically speaking) Crysis game, the 'crap rhymes' part of my imagination dredged up No Way Sis, who were at one time deemed the UK's premier Oasis tribute act and enjoyed far too much success of their own. Even a hit single.…

Crysis 2, Witcher 2, FIFA 12 In Yer Browser

This is probably old news to you, but it's new news to me and my ancient Egyptian ancestors told me during my hypnotherapy that the entire universe is just a figment of my imagination, therefore I can post it if I please and if you moan it's only because I'm imagining someone moaning. Cloud gaming tech Gaikai has been offering streaming demos of various games…

Crytek Boss Hits Back At Crytek Boos

Rumours emerged this weekend that all isn't happy-times at Crytek. The Crysis developer has been accused of mistreating staff, and sacking employees unlawfully, the accusations appearing on a Tumblr blog. But these are accusations Crytek's co-founder Avni Yerli has rushed to deny, speaking to Develop. Amid suggestions that six-month crunch periods leave employees not knowing if they will still have a job, Yerli insists that…

Content Wars: Origin/Steam Scuffle Unfolds

We never got a proper answer about what dark force it was which led to a few EA games - most noisily Crysis 2 - suddenly vanishing from Steam last month. Valve have kept entirely mum about their side of the story, but EA claim it was Valve who wielded the axe, due to a mystery transgression of Steam's terms and conditions. Of course, all…

Maximum Mod: Crysis 2 Editor Released

Attention modders! Hot on the heels of the recent DX11 patch, the Crysis 2 Editor is now available (with a bunch of other tools) to download at crymod.com and mycrysis.com, which was named after a fairly strong-handed self-help book expounding advanced military weaponry over sit-ins with your therapist. The Crysis mod scene came up with some properly fantastic stuff, and armed with all the tech…

Crysis 2’s Fancy Graphics Patch Released

Woo, fancy! It's here. When using the new “Ultra” spec, DX9 platforms will benefit from real-time local reflections and contact shadows. The owners of DX11 platforms, in addition, will be able to enjoy hardware tessellation (requires the installation of the “DX11 Ultra Upgrade”), parallax occlusion mapping and several improvements for shadows, water, particles, depth of field and motion blur. Phwoar, eh readers? (You probably want…

Crytek: Crysis 2’s Direction “Backfired”

Speaking with Gamasutra, Crytek bossman Cervat Yerli had this to say about the Crysis games: "Crysis 1's intention was, if I were to play it three years later, it looks great. And it does, actually, it fulfilled that. But it made it difficult for entry-level players. So with Crysis 2, we took a different direction, and it backfired a little bit." Yerli explained that the…

Crying Out Loud: Another Crysis Map Pack

Did you buy the Crysis 2 'Retaliation' map pack last month? Then you'll probably be pleased to know that a second one, the 'Decimation' pack, has just gone on sale. Once again it'll cost you $10, though this time you're getting five new maps (instead of four) and two new weapons- the FY71 assault rifle and smoke grenades. Tell you what, no video game smoke…

It’s War: EA’s “Own Platform Exclusives”

While the waters around Crysis 2's sudden disappearance from Steam last night remain somewhat muddy, EA Games prez Frank Gibeau has spilled a few heavily suggestive beans about the big brass balls the publisher has about its proprietary download service, Origin, and how it intends to keep any other download service's grubby mitts off a few of its choicest games.

Crysis 2 Pulled From Steam?

"Where were you when the war began, Daddy?" "Well, little Ignatius H. Meer III, I was at my PC, staring vacantly at Twitter. Probably eating some crisps as I did. I'll never forget that dark, terrible day. The day that EA decided they could fight Steam." "Daddy? Why are you crying, Daddy?" Crysis 2 has disappeared from Steam, and is now described as being "Origin…

Mod News: Clever Girl

Quite a lot of mod news this week, apparently, even though there's very little for you to actually play. There's a long-awaited update from Jurrassic Life, as well as plenty of other gubbins related to Half-Life 2, Crysis, Stalker: Clear Sky, Portal 2 and Dirt 3. That's a lot of games! Read on to find out what's what.

Crysis 2 Retaliation Map Pack Available

Level up! Four of them, actually. The Retaliation map pack for Crysis 2 is now available for $10, say EA, presumably for purchase within the game because I certainly can't see anywhere on the internet to buy it. The four maps, “Park Avenue” “Transit” “Shipyard” and “Compound” all look like they'd make a nice home for an excitable nano-warrior, and you can see all four…

Cry For Free: Crysis 2 Editor, CryEngine SDK

A new splashpage at CryMod, which is currently being overhauled, reveals that this summer will see the apperance of both a Crysis 2 editor and a CryEngine SDK. What does this mean? Well, it means people will be able able to make levels for Crysis 2, but also that they'll be able to make non-commercial stuff for free using the CryEngine tech. Crytek's Mr Yerli…
