Vampyr’s first patch takes a bite out of some funny bugs

While no amount of patching (short of a Final Fantasy XV-style rewrite) will address its clumsy final act, flawed but fascinating gothic RPG Vampyr received its first patch this week. It addresses a few minor bugs and smooths out mouse and keyboard controls, including better lock-on targeting. Still, we're a little sad to see some of the less game-threatening (and more YouTube highlight-worthy) bugs fixed, as they were…

Life Is Strange 2’s first episode is due out in September

The first episode of Life Is Strange 2 will arrive on September 27. Dontnod's Twitter account has announced the release date, along with a painfully brief teaser displaying only the title and the series length: five episodes. Beyond that, the developers are keeping quiet. For more details we’ll need to wait until August.

Feature: The rise and fall of choice and consequence

Vampyr saves its most affecting dilemmas for its last act – and then loses its mind

When I published my Vampyr review (summary: choice is an illusion, apart from when it's a roulette wheel; the dialogue's stuffy but the fights are tight if you invest in them), I estimated that I was about two-thirds of the way through the game. With embargoes and deadlines out the way, I was curious to see how it all resolved, and particularly what, if any,…

Dontnod’s Captain Spirit reminds us that we’ve become old and dead inside

Life is Strange was always promised to be a big complicated weirdo universe. I thought Dontnod started fulfilling that promise when they setup the expansion/prequel Before The Storm and let us explore superpower-less backstories. But here's a bit of something completely different: The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit; an original story set in the Life is Strange universe and taking on a completely different style…

Life Is Strange devs announce Twin Mirror

Following the teen drama of Life Is Strange and the bloodsucking drama of Vampyr, Dontnod Entertainment are next applying their spooky sensibilities to a tale of a journalist returning to his home town. Publishers Bandai Namco today announced Twin Mirror, the Dontnod game they teased last year but had kept secret. Turns out, it's a "psychological thriller" story 'em up involving amnesia, investigation, and possibly…

Video: 10 Vampyr tips to prevent an undead apocalypse

I was going to call this article ‘10 Vampyr tips to stop you sucking at sucking’, but this doesn’t reflect my experience with the game. As you’ll have read in Alec’s delightful Vampyr review, the act of drinking blood is a wicked temptation. It’s the quickest way to slurp up XP and lower the combat difficulty, but comes at the cost of depopulating the world…

Vampyr review

"Forget everything you think you know about vampires," the noblewoman in period dress tells me, in her straight-out-of-Hammer cut-glass accent. This was during our latest night-time meeting (for we cannot walk in sunlight), shortly after I'd caught her secretly sinking her teeth into the necks of the dispossessed, and shortly before I'd been beset by agony upon trying to enter a church. I don't know…

Feature: The inevitability of "Bury Your Gays"

Life Is Strange: Before The Storm can’t escape the first game’s use of harmful tropes

Spoiler warning: This article includes spoilers for the entirety of both Life Is Strange and Life Is Strange: Before The Storm. Life Is Strange: Before The Storm is, in its own right, a very good game. But it can’t avoid the fact that it’s a Life Is Strange game, specifically a prequel to the original. And in the original, one of its central characters is…

Feature: Bloody hell

Vampyr isn’t the afterlife of the party just yet

I feel like Vampyr has been part of my life for a very long time. It was only three years ago that I first saw the game, but I've been following it closely since then. It's always been at arm's length though, seen in the occasional video playthrough or prior to an interview with the developers. Last week, I had my first chance to play…

Dontnod’s Vampyr rises on June 5

Dontnod's vampiric action-RPG Vampyr will launch on June 5th, publishers Focus Home announced today. Vampyr whisk us back to a flu-ridden London in 1918 as a newly-vampirated doctor to do murders, drink blood, and shape the future of the city as we wrestle with moral dilemmas. While Dontnod are best known for Life Is Strange, it's probably more helpful here to remember they're studio behind…

Life is Strange creators take on a new narrative project

1. There is a mysterious narrative adventure game with investigation elements being teased by Bandai Namco and Life is Strange creators Dontnod! 2. The two bits of artwork I have on the matter make the whole thing look like a rural British murder mystery on ITV even though it's set in the US. "House Exterior" is above and "Town Viewpoint" is after the jump.

Life is Strange: Before the Storm is a doomed romance

There's an obvious metaphor in the subtitle of the Life is Strange [official site] prequel. Before the Storm refers to a meteorological incident in the original game, but this is a coming of age story. Growing up can be as violent, euphoric, frightening and cleansing as a storm. What I've seen of the prequel makes youth seem like the precursor to tragedy. We're going to…

Life Is Strange: Before the Storm starts in August

Heartbreaking teen melodrama Life Is Strange will return on August 31st with a three-episode prequel starring Chloe, named Life Is Strange: Before The Storm [official site]. Set three years before the first game, it'll tell how Chloe's doomed relationship with gal pal Rachel Amber began. Life Is Strange makes clear how that all ends so sure, go on, twist the knife, you monsters. Unexpectedly, this…

Dontnod’s Vampyr rising in November

After Dontnod Entertainment announced a second Life Is Strange, I did half-forget that they're making another game. They are! Vampyr [official site] is an action-RPG with a bloodsucker skulking around London in 1918, tangled up in secret societies, monsterfights, and other undead antics. Supposedly there will be consequences to who we choose to snack on, though it's definitely more along the lines of Dontnod's face-punching…

Give me a hella yeah: more Life Is Strange coming

We loved Life Is Strange [official site] here at RPS. Even though we're so old that we had to Ask Jeeves (.com) what all of the slang its characters used actually meant, we fell in love with the autumnal world and the people sighing and struggling through their strange little lives. In a tale as old as time-manipulation, a photography student uncovers mystery and rekindles…

Watch 14 Minutes Of Vampyr Pre-Alpha Gameplay

Oh hey, I didn't see this gameplay demo walkthrough-y footage of Vampyr [official site] come up earlier this week. It's sort of from E3 but this version that doesn't have people talking over the top so let's have a look now. (In case you need a little refresher it's that vampire-themed RPG from the Life Is Strange devs where you're a vampire doctor and have…

Weird: Life Is Strange Live-Action Series Announced

The fab time-travelling teen drama Life Is Strange [official site] is to become a live-action television series, Square Enix announced today. Or whatever it is we're supposed to call television shows made for cybernet screens. A "digital series", they say. Netflix or something, perhaps? We don't know who what where when - or why, really - but we do know Squeenix have partnered with Legendary's…

For those of you who don't remember, it is the story of photography student Max and her tough toque-wearing friend Chloe.
