The best VR games on PC

Ever since Half-Life: Alyx came out earlier this year, virtual reality has been going from strength to strength, so we've put together a list of the best VR games you can play on PC right now. It's by no means a complete list, as there are now more great VR games than you'll ever have time to play, but if you've just bought yourself a…

Feature: Unpossibly entertaining

Have you played… Fantastic Contraption?

Once upon a time, I, like many others, did very little from day to day apart from play tonnes of browser-based Flash games. And of all the games I played during this fascinating period of my childhood, I didn't expect a simple little physics-based puzzle game to have imparted some of the fondest and longest-lasting memories. If you've played Fantastic Contraption, I'm sure you feel…

Fantastic Contraption: Why A Cat Is 100 Times Better

While at GDC I had the opportunity to sit down with Colin Northway, one of the creators behind the excellent VR remake (and the 2D original) Fantastic Contraption [official site]. We talked about how VR worked differently compared with traditional game design or, to put it less mundanely, why a walking cat dispensing sticks is better than a menu system. While at GDC Adam really…

Our favourite PC games of 2016 so far

We usually do our enormous GAMES OF THE YEAR posting fest at the end of the year (as would seem logical) but because it seems silly to reserve praise for special occasions we're doing a Games Of The Half Year collection to tell you about everything we've loved playing so far. It can double as a summer holiday recommendations list too! We've listed ours in…

Watch Vive Game Fantastic Contraption At Seated Scale

I spent the weekend doing two things, building furniture and mucking about with Vive games such as Fantastic Contraption. It's a remake of an old browser game in which you must transport a ball towards a goal by building a vehicle to carry or push it there. I was pretty sore after bending and twisting at odd angles to put screws in my furniture and,…

Fantastic Contraption Video Mixes Reality And Virtual

It's hard to demonstrate virtual reality games in video, because most of the good ones depend upon them being viewed through a headset and not via a flat YouTube embed. This latest footage of Fantastic Contraption [official site] finds a good route though by alternating between video captured in-game, in-headset and via a secondary camera looking at the room which blends real and game footage…

Fantastic Contraption Coming To The Vive VR Headset

Fantastic Contraption [official site] is returning as a room-scale VR game built for Valve and HTC's Vive headset. The original game was a 2D browser-based puzzle game about creating a device to carry a ball towards a goal, but creator Colin Northway is now re-building it as a virtual reality experience in which you build similar devices in 3D. There's a trailer below.

Impossible Creature: Incredipede

Left to steer the good ship RPS on my own today, I was feeling a little grim. Jaw set, lip slightly curled, brow furrowed, coffee cup crushed by my feeble fist: you know the look. Then I watched this footage of Incredipede ('a game about life and feet'), the next offering from the creator of Fantastic Contraption, and now I keep giggling to myself and…

I Am Not Smart Enough For Fantastic Contraption

I hated physics more than any other class at school. And not just because of the time my teacher slammed me in the side of the neck with an exercise book, causing me to black out for 3 seconds. It was mostly because my brain seems to have some inherent inability to accommodate the kind of thinking necessary to understand forces and elasticity and so…
