The 9 deadliest sharks in videogames

Listen, never mind that sharks are not the mindlessly violent animals we’ve been trained to fear, and simply additional victims of mankind’s global vertebrate binge. Dismiss, please, the ongoing cultural rehabilitation of this toothy swimmer, who is statistically quite poor at killing humans. Ignore also their adorable habit of falling asleep when you hold them upside-down. Forget it, forget it all. No more lovey-dovey thoughts…

2020’s most exciting new PC games

Over the break we had a chance to do some serious scientific study of this business we call games, and it turns out that games are actually good. 2020 in particular has a healthy mix of big budget bonanzas and smaller indie plates to suit everyone's discerning tastes. And, as you know, the RPS treehouse is the most discerning, so to make it easier for…

Maneater taps into our collective desire to be a super-powered shark

If your entire game is about munching other creatures as an increasingly super-powered shark, it's important to get the chomp noise right. I'm talking about Maneater, Blindside Interactive's upcoming sea dog sim*, which they describe as "GTA but you're a shark". Based on the hands-off demo I saw at E3, I'd say that's a bit silly. But reader, they've absolutely nailed the chomp noise.

Maneater would be easy to condemn if it didn’t look a right laugh

I’ve got two completely separate takes on Maneater. It’s almost as if I split into two people when watching the gameplay footage released at E3 -- two fizzing outlines of myself, roughly tethered to my physical form like a bad 80s special effect. One of those outlines, the crackly red one, loved it. I think he’s my inner nine year old, who used to entertain…

The Cheerer and the Jeerer – the PC Gaming Show at E3 as it happened

Matt: Brendy never made it home last night, after jeering his way through Bethesda's conference in person. The hotel room is lonely and I miss him very much, but the PC Gaming Show must go on. Welcome to the "I'm the only one that's here-ah", where I cheer and jeer at the cheery RPS fanzine's show by myself. Brendan Wraithwell: Don't worry, I've got your…

Feature: Epic Flail

It’s great that Epic is trying to compete with Steam, but they’re going about it in the worst way

Steam, unquestionably, needs a sizeable competitor. With a significant monopoly on the PC games market, such that present rivals like GOG and Humble barely take a dent out of its audience, Valve is able to take an infuriatingly lackadaisical approach to many aspects of Steam. Something to scare them into action would be marvellous. And while not optimistic, I'd hoped that maybe Epic, with their…

Podcast: The best and worst of E3 2018

The festival of dumb explosions known as E3 is over, but that won’t stop us. The RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show, goes deep into the show, picking out our favourite games, the oddest moments, and best rats (spoiler: it was the one crushed by a shelf in the Resident Evil 2 trailer). We’re also introducing two new voices this week. Who are these strange…
