Overwatch says its bad behaviour is down by 40%, but that doesn’t tell the full story

At GDC this week, Blizzard gave a talk discussing the endorsement system that they added to Overwatch last summer, claiming that it reduced bad behaviour in the first person shooter by 40%. Huzzah! Unfortunately, even if we take Blizzard’s own numbers totally at face value, it’s that remaining 60% you’re actually going to notice playing the game and interacting with the community.

Overwatch patches in Baptiste to patch you up

Blizzard today add Overwatch's thirtieth character, a combat medic by the name of Baptiste. He has the power to thwomp out healing grenades, create an "immortality field" that stops nearby pals from dying, throw down barriers that amplify friendly damage and healing passing through it... he's a medic, in combat. Baptiste has been on the public test servers for three weeks now, where he's seemed…

Overwatch’s Baptiste is now chucking immortality fields around the PTR

Caring not for the sanctity of a normal news cycle, Blizzard released Baptiste on the Overwatch test servers a few hours after announcing him. He's a combat medic who, we know now, has an ability that renders him and nearby teammates immune to damage. Like, all types of damage. People are running around in the death-zones underneath cliffs. They're jumping about in traffic. It's carnage.…

New Overwatch hero threatens you with bullets or bandages

Quick, hurry to the special bell: a new Overwatch hero has been announced. Baptiste is his name, and healing people is his game. Also killing people, because this is an FPS and of course everyone does that. He's a combat medic with a tragic past, as you're about to learn in his origin video. There are no hard details on his abilities just yet. Only…

The Shanghai Dragons finally secure their first Overwatch League victory

It finally happened. The Overwatch League’s Shanghai Dragons, who lost every one of their 40 matches in the inaugural season, finally won one. Not only that, they took three straight maps with apparent ease from the Boston Uprising, former team of main tank player Noh “Gamsu” Youngjin, allowing him to show them what a mistake it was to trade him away to the Dragons with…

Overwatch is off to gay Paris in latest map, now live

The Overwatch gang are off on their hols to Paris in the newest map, added last night. Now everyone's just scrapping for funsies, the 'watch' part of their name is more about sightseeing than surveilling and their global tour has now reached the City of Lights. The map's been on the test servers for three weeks, and now it's in the main client for all…

The Overwatch League is back tonight, but missing many of the staff who made last season so excellent

The Overwatch League is back tonight for its second season, seeing 20 teams face off in an attempt to be crowned the ultimate champions. Will the London Spitfire manage to repeat their successes? Can anyone stop the powerhouse that is the New York Excelsior? Will the Shanghai Dragons finally net their first win? It all kicks off at 4pm PST/12am GMT, and you can watch…

Activision Blizzard prioritise profit over people, laying off around 800 employees

Not content with what Activision CEO Bobby Kotick referred to as “record results” in an earnings call yesterday, the World of Warcraft and Call of Duty publisher has begun plans to layoff 8% of its total employees. That’s around 800 people out of work, many of them speculated to be “among the company’s lowest earners”.

Overwatch’s new Paris map has some ace pianos

Bonjour, my little cauliflowers. The new Overwatch map klaxon is a-clanging, summoning us all to the glitz and glamour of Parisian street murder. In a pre-Valentine's surprise, Blizzard popped Paris on the public test servers last night. Are they gearing up for some grand Valentine's Day event? Hopefully. In the meantime, here is a neat piano and a robot singer.

Overwatch romances all Three Kingdoms for Lunar New Year

Do not pursue Lu Bu, because he has shotguns - you should probably snipe him instead in Overwatch's Lunar New Year event, starting now and running until February 18th. Celebrating the Year Of The Pig in China, most of the cast are dressed up again as characters of Chinese myth and legend, including a few choice picks from Romance Of The Three Kingdoms. This event…

Unofficial Overwatch tournament will test out a hero ban system

Whether or not the Overwatch League should implement hero bans has been a hot topic among fans and professionals lately. Those who are behind the approach believe it'll mix up a stale meta, but it's hard to say for sure until we see it in action. Luckily, some players will be taking it for a test drive (albeit unofficially) in tonight’s Tournament of Future Champions,…

What if Overwatch but cats is the best animated short yet

I hope the rest of the internet is paying attention, because Blizzard just showed how to use cats as a force for good. They've commissioned an animated Overwatch short from Dillon Gu that ties in with "Ana's Bastet Challenge", a cosmetic-grabbing event about how Ana used to fight crime dressed as a cat. I'm going to stop typing now so you can see it sooner.

Overwatch’s new unlockable Ana outfit is cool for cats

Winning nine rounds of Overwatch over the next fortnight will net you a neat-o cat costume for snipermum Ana, thanks to challenge Blizzard have launched. The 'Bastet' skin leans into her Ancient Egyptian mythology flair, and it's a good'un. While much focus around the out-of-game short story which inspired this, also named Bastet, has been on the fact that growly shootman Soldier76 mopes over his…

Soldier 76 chose war over a boyfriend in Overwatch short story

In Bastet (an official Overwatch short story released today) Blizzard have confirmed that one more member of the game's ever-expanding cast fits under that cozy LGBTQ+ umbrella. Eternal squad dad Jack "Soldier 76" Morrison once had a lad back home named Vincent, but the mission was tragically more important than love. It's a minor revelation, but in keeping with Blizzard's odd divide between Overwatch's characters…

Overwatch Contenders controversy has once again made things more difficult for women in esports

Late last year, tier two professional Overwatch team Second Wind announced that they’d signed a female player. The woman, who went by the tag “Ellie” but kept much of her identity private, was lined up to be one of very few to play in Overwatch Contenders. Though many were excited to see some variety in the male-dominated scene, Ellie was immediately subjected to harassment, including…

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Overwatch, Destiny 2 and Heroes Of The Storm

They must have been shipping eggnog, mistletoe, tinsel and other festive goodies to the Blizzard store in bulk, as they're kicking off seasonal events in multiple games today. Team FPS Overwatch and crossover MOBA Heroes Of The Storm are getting especially daft for the season, while Bungie are playing it a little more straight in shoot n' looter Destiny 2. Not that they haven't found…

Overwatch is free to try and cheap to keep for the next week

Somehow, there are still people out there who don't own Blizzard's sci-fi superhero team shooter Overwatch. This is despite the game being free approximately a quarter of the time (or at least it feels like it) and heavily discounted half of the remainder. If you're one of those people, now seems as good a time as any to try it, as Blizzard have flung its…

The Overwatch League’s Hangzhou Spark know how to brand themselves

Since the Overwatch League announced eight new expansion teams for season two, there’s only been one question on everyone’s mind: what colours will they use? At first, it seemed they were all going to be duds, falling back on the sea of blues and reds already dominating the matches. The Chengdu Hunters did something interesting with their yellow kit, but nothing can match the most…

Ashe and Bob steal the spotlight in Overwatch update 1.30 today

Overwatch's latest diabolical duo - bandit queen Ashe and her mechanised manservant Bob - have sailed through public testing with ease, and are now live on the regular servers for the game. While there's still two weeks until they'll allow them into competitive, ranked play, they're available for use in every other mode right now. She's a mid-range precision damage-dealer with a powerful grenade attack…

Overwatch’s next patch will require players to reinstall the game

Blizzard’s next big update for Overwatch apparently contains “some pretty fundamental changes” – fundamental enough that players will be required to reinstall their game. Details on what the patch will contain are light, but apparently a "substantial number" of "back-end changes" mean that simply patching over the existing download isn't enough.
