Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. When it comes to survival games, there's a definite emphasis on struggle and conflict. Not so in Salt, possibly the gentlest, most soothing survival game of all.

Salt has been a real treat this year - a real alternative. Where survival games have (rightly) mostly focused on intense difficulty, Salt put its emphasis on just idling about. And that's a fantastic thing to have in the mix. Even in its early alpha form, with minimal goings-on, it's still the most pleasant exploration I've had this year, and that makes it Bestest.
What better aligning of the fates than RPS’s Survival Week, and a fresh arrival on Steam, to excuse playing some more of Lavaboots' Salt? The seafaring island-explorer has seen a few updates since I last played, as well as a place on Steam’s Early Access. And most of all, fishing.
In early 2012, a mod for Arma II called DayZ was released. Two-and-a-half years later, its odd mixture of multiplayer, horror, and a need for players to keep themselves fed and watered, has given rise to the survival genre. Let's celebrate that genre.

It hadn’t been my plan to keep playing Salt over the weekend, but that’s what happened. The early access (although not yet Steam Early Access) game has only been out for two weeks, but the alpha is already receiving regular updates.
