Chain shot cannonballs are coming to Sea Of Thieves and they look brutal

The next addition to the Sea Of Thieves arsenal is going to be a doozy - they're introducing chain shot cannonballs to take out your enemies' masts. These projectiles are pretty self explanatory, they're basically two cannonballs connected by a chain. When you hit a ship hull with these you aren't going to do huge amounts of damage, but if you nail the capstan, masts…

Listen to the screams of the man who voiced the angry chest in Sea Of Thieves

This week, Sea Of Thieves introduced some very angry treasure chests - appropriately named Chests Of Rage. These chests are pretty needy, if you don't pay attention to them they blow up, engulfing everything around them in fire, and letting out a hearty scream as they do so. As it turns out, that scream is the voice of none-other than the game's award-winning composer, Robin…

Sea Of Thieves’ new flaming chests are live in today’s update

Sea Of Thieves' monthly content update has dropped anchor and it's a hot one. We already got a look at some of the changes from Rare's Crews Of Rage preview and now it's all officially live. There are hot potato chests that explode, sizzling skeletons, and a lot of other stuff that's too hot to handle.

Sea Of Thieves will add pirate face changes and a flaming treasure chest

It's nearly time for the monthly Sea Of Thieves content update and Rare have shared a few details on what to expect for February. In their commitment to everything being on fire all the time now, a new flaming variety of cursed chest will threaten your deck with flames. They are also finally (finally) letting pirates change their faces.

Sea Of Thieves players hosted a fashion show

A French Sea Of Thieves outfit called L'Arche Du Grog eschewed the call of booty to host the first major fashion event of the season earlier this week. Players joined together to showcase their outfits, but in terms of style and personality rather than price tag. They "had to walk and emote creatively according to the themes", as you can see in the below video.

Sea Of Thieves latest update is celebrating players who’ve committed legendary pirate feats

Sea Of Thieves' latest free update, Legends Of The Sea, arrives today, bringing with it an in-game easter egg hunt. You won't be hunting for actual eggs though, instead you'll be sent to search for some of those video game easter eggs, and in Sea Of Thieves these take the form of references to the game's most legendary players. The references tend to be things like…

Sea Of Thieves will let you tattoo meta game lore on your pirate

A free content update is coming next week to the silly online swashbuckling game Sea Of Thieves. As a precursor, Rare have released a developer update video explaining one community-focused addition. The Legends Of The Sea update will give more prominence to easter eggs already present in the game to immortalize certain players.

Play Sea of Thieves and Halo: Reach for pennies – Game Pass is only £1 right now

I’ve been spending the past few weeks playing co-op games with my BFF. I wanted to try Sea of Thieves, because when I’m not dreaming of being an astronaut, I’m dreaming of being a pirate. Being Scottish, I suggested we use Game Pass, Microsoft’s games subscription service, and was surprised to see that it was only £1. Then I was surprised to see that the…

Sea Of Thieves gets a microtransaction store

Microtransactions have now come to Sea of Thieves as part of it's September update, introducing parakeets that'll set you back just under 500 Ancient Coin - that's digital piratespeak for about five quid, or alternatively however long it takes you to grind the Ancient Skeletons who drop the currency. Hey man, just because you're a pirate doesn't mean you can't partake in that crazy work-a-day…

Sea Of Thieves has a pirate racing league and I adore it

Two pirates sit across from each other, earnestly discussing the tactics of the Raccoons. Dread Pirate Doug marvels at their ingenuity: in a past race the Raccoons found an unprecedentedly efficient way of killing themselves, giving them a head start in their attempt to board the Ferry of the Damned and light the beacon at Kraken's Fall. Throughout this analysis, two co-commenters repeatedly launch themselves…

Competitive Sea Of Thieves is chaotic pirate-y fun

Attendees of this weekend’s Guardian Con were invited to take part in a competitive Sea Of Thieves tournament, with the best four teams making it to the streamed finals last night. The Battle For Orlando (presumably so called because its watery arena is actually a post-climate-crisis Florida) was fittingly scrappy and chaotic for a game about pirates squabbling over the high seas. Where else are…

Sea Of Thieves story adventures started in Anniversary Update

Fishing, story-driven adventures, a PvP arena mode, and other shiny newnesses today come to Sea Of Thieves in its Anniversary Update, which confusingly is coming thirteen-and-a-bit months after launch. While the multiplayer pirate sandbox initially seemed to be sinking without a trace because it had little to do, as our former Alec (RPS in peace) noted in his Sea Of Thieves review, Sea Of Thieves…

Sea Of Thieves lets friends sail for free this week

After a rough first year, Sea Of Thieves - the piratical MMO-lite - is on the up and up. Interest in the game (and all things piratical) is high, and its latest big update brought a swathe of new PvE activities to its previously competitive-focused seas. Rare reckon that now would be a good time to show the game to your friends, so if you…

Sea Of Thieves to let Xbox sea-dogs opt out of cross-platform play

No sooner has Sea Of Thieves found its sea legs that Rare and Microsoft announce a perplexing decision. One of the game's big selling points was its easy PC to Xbox One cross-platform play, but will soon offer the option for gamepad-using Xbox players not to cross the platform strait into Windows waters. It's understandable - the game has a strong PvP element, and mouse…

Sea Of Thieves jettisons half its cargo – a reason to return?

Remember Sea of Thieves, Rare's piratical, sandbox sorta-MMO? I do, what with reviewing it and all, but only as if a dream. Emotive, fragmentary scenes of waves and sunset and accordions. A blissful boredom. Actual detail of the things I did, found or fought? Not a bit of it. Maybe there were some skeletons once? I think often of going back, part in curiosity about…

Sea Of Thieves’s Shrouded Spoils update adds more meat to its skellington bones

I'm officially resolved to return to Sea Of Thieves's world of online piratical nonsense thanks to today's new treasure-trove of content. The Shrouded Spoils update for once isn't focused on a single time-limited quest or global event, but rather fleshing out its existing systems. Fog threatens ships along jagged coastlines and more skeleton ships roam in more shapes and sizes, occasionally on their own skellington…

Sea Of Thieves’s Forsaken Shores update adds volcanoes, rowboats and legal commerce

As the nights grow colder and the days shorter, Rare's piratical MMO Sea Of Thieves is drawing me back with an enticingly warm-looking volcanic update, Forsaken Shores. This free new treasure-chest of content adds a new area to the map called The Devil's Roar filled with superheated environmental hazards - the floor is literally lava. It also introduces a new kind of store encountered out…

Sea Of Thieves’s skellington-crewed Cursed Sails update is live

While aesthetically lovely, online swashbuckler Sea Of Thieves probably didn't have enough meat on its bones at launch. Today's update, Cursed Sails, is a bit paradoxical then - its roaming crews of evil skeleton sailors add a major new NPC threat to the oceans, just ironically without flesh. Adding a new time-limited quest, plus a goodly chunk of new things to see and do to…

Sea Of Thieves’ Hungering Deep bares its teeth today

Ah, Sea of Thieves. A few slightly barnacled spots on its hull aside, it's a lovely little thing so long as you can get a crew together. It's just a little light on things to do, outside of crossing swords with other rival crews of players. Today's big update, The Hungering Deep, promises to bring a little bit more action to the table in a…
