Please enjoy Justin Bieber’s new house put into 90s strategy games

Earlier this week the social medias went wild over pictures of Justin Bieber's giant plastic mansion-hole. People were saying it looked like the Marvel Avengers HQ. This is the most incorrect thing I have ever heard. It clearly looks like something you'd see made out of empty Müller Corners and Fairy Liquid bottles on three successive episodes of Blue Peter.Look at it. That's the long…

Have You Played… SimCity 2000?

Given that ‘Have You Played’ posts tend towards reminiscence, I find I often end up talking about the music I listened to while playing the games in question. I rarely intend to do this, mind, but it happens nonetheless. The tunes are bycatch: scavengers of the benthic mind, which get caught up in my net whenever I trawl the depths for recollections. And when I…

Streets Of SimCity can now run on modern PCs thanks to fan tinkering

Remember Streets Of SimCity? No? Wouldn't blame you, mate. Back when SimCity was taking over the world, Maxis were having some bright ideas of how to capitalise on that. Thus, you had games like Streets Of SimCity letting you drive about your own SimCity 2000 world in a gun-toting Volkswagon. It was neat, but it was a bit naff, too.Aleksander "Alekasm" Krimsky's SimStreetsX brings the…

My Favourite Art Style: SimCity 2000

I like to tell people that the brilliance of SimCity 2000's art style rested on the fact that it was not isometric but rather used a technique called dimetric projection. In simple terms, that means the tiles were the same length in all directions horizontally, but they followed a different, flatter scale vertically. It created an iconic angular look and, functionally speaking, it was huge…

Sim City 2000 Is 20 Years Old And Free

Last year's SimCity was, in the end, pretty average. Its launch and the outright bullshit that EA span around it was a disaster, but the game was simply a quite disappointing entry in a formerly brilliant series. And I'd argue it was never any more brilliant than in Sim City 2000. Which makes it splendid news that just now, Sim City 2000 is free!

Gaming Made Me: Sim City 2000

This week in Gaming Made Me, Wired UK's Duncan Geere recalls how Sim City 2000 (and its incredible manual) taught him utopian values, gave him a life-long fascination with impossible habitats and brought about a new sense of just what manner of strange beast is a city. I still have the manual for SimCity 2000. The game CD, or perhaps even floppy disks -- I…

The Very Important List Of PC Games, Part 2/5

Yesterday, as you may have noted, Dr Rossignol began our lecture series on the most important PC games of all time. Much like The Christmas Lectures, The Reith Lectures, and the TED Lectures, this definitive series has been a part of our institution as long as the Earth has borne stones. In this second part Professor John Walker explains the varying importanceness of a second…

Retro: SimCity 2000

In keeping with our Sim theme, I thought I'd publish this piece which was originally written in summer 2007 for PC Gamer UK's Long Play series. This look back at SimCity 2000 invites the anger of fans of the subsequent SimCity games by claiming it was the best the series had to offer. Perhaps it's just me... Perhaps not. If nothing else I think that…
