Feature: Hack the planet!

As Cyberpunk 2077 is running late, here’s a broad spread of cyberpunky fun

Now that Cyberpunk 2077 is delayed from April to September, what are you to do? You've grown a lurid blue mohawk, your leather jacket is almost worn in, and your prescription mirrorshades are ready for collection at Specsavers - but for what? You might as well use this time to explore all games cyberpunky, from edgy and nihilistic griping about how the future sucks to…

Feature: No, the FPS

Have You Played… Syndicate?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time. No, not that one. The other one. Yes, the FPS. EA trying to resurrect Bullfrog's top-down tactical series as an FPS was obviously going to rile up the people it was supposed to excite, but ignore the name. It's a pleasant spot of face-shooting…

Satellite Reign: Early Access Impressions

Spritual Syndicate sequel/remake Satellite Reign arrived on Steam Early Access last week. Can it possibly live up to its hallowed Bullfrog cyberpunk squad shooter legacy? I jacked in to find out.The bad news: we're running out of things that we want spiritual sequels to! Everything we ever wanted is coming true! CRISIS IN VIDEOGAMELAND. The good news: Syndicate remake (of a sort) Satellite Reign is…

Have You Played… Syndicate?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.I'm playing Satellite Reign right now, so the Bullfrog subversive squad-shooter which heavily inspired it is very much on my mind. SR marks a sea-change: a game that's been bewilderingly ignored by studios for decades is only now getting the follow-up it deserves.

Interview: Early Access, Stealth And Mods In Invisible, Inc.

Invisible, Inc. is coming to Steam Early Access on August 19th. It's developer Klei's return to stealth after 2012's Mark of the Ninja, but this time it's turn-based, tactical, and about steering a team of operatives through a Syndicate-inspired world of corporate espionage. It's also their return to procedural generation and permadeath after 2013's vastly successful Burtonesque survival game, Don't Starve.I spoke to company founder…

Let’s Not Lose Sight Of The Future

Last week I found myself in two conversations about resurrecting dead games. One was about Homeworld: I'd made a flippant comment about pressuring Relic to do a Kickstarter to make a sequel, and other people agreed. If Double Fine can raise millions for a point 'n click, then why not millions for our lost and beloved space RTS? The other was about Syndicate. Wouldn't it…

Everybody’s Free: Starbreeze’s Next Game Is Free-To-Play

We have a name, Cold Mercury, and we have a vague notion as to what the business model will be, free-to-play, but that's all there is to know about Syndicate developer Starbreeze's next game. Business smarties GamesIndustry.biz dug up the details from Starbreeze's CEO Mikael Nermark. He said. "Starbreeze will not leave the AAA segment. We are discussing with several leading game publisher on publisher…

Wot I Think: Syndicate Co-Op

Alright, I've spent today investigating Syndicate's four-player co-operative online mode, and while I'm obviously several decades away from reaching all the unlocks and whatnot, I've got a firm handle on how it all works and if I think it's any cop. Is it as forgettable as the singleplayer? Is it anything like Syndicate? What would the world be like if Mr Mark Question of Shoreham-on-Sea…

Feature: Not terribly persuasive

Wot I Think: Syndicate (Singleplayer)

I've been playing EA and Starbreeze's contentious FPS reboot of the legendary Syndicate. I've only done a little dabbling in co-op, a report on which I will present very soon (so far: better than singleplayer, but very much in the unlock/ranking modern multiplayer idiom). You can find my rather more positive thoughts on the co-op mode here, but below is my take on the campaign…

Ascii What You Did: Syndicate Dev’s Message To Pirates

The humble .nfo file is a business card, instruction manual, and score-setting rap song in ascii form. They're the files that the piracy scene drops into their releases to claim bragging rights for that particular chunk of nefarious code. So why the hell did Syndicate Developers Starbreeze stick one in the legitimate release of their first-person shooter? Redditor MikkelManDK spotted the file in the game's…

Syndicate Doesn’t Launch With This Launch Trailer

In another example of the games industry twisting a word until its meaning shatters into a thousand pieces of bacon shredding shrapnel, blinding a nearby piglet who only wanted to use his eyes to see what was happening, and who'll now go through the rest of his life bumping sadly into your leg and hoping you're not a rabid wolf... that piglet trusted you, damnit!…

Syndicate’s Co-Op Agents Are Foursome

Hello there. The characters in the new Syndicate co-op trailer seem to be having a competition to see who can have the worst made-up soldier-person name on the team! Ooh, they're all contenders, but sadly none have as terrible a name as the single player protagonist, Miles Kilo (pictured with his tool). Still, it's not worth being too snide around these agents of corporate malevolence,…

Fishing For Chips: Syndicate’s Tech Wars

Last time out, Syndicate was showing off its guns and I don't remember seeing a single flamethrower, which made me grumble in a manner befitting a madman denied the ability to burn the flesh off his enemies. The latest piece of video advertainment is all about the power of technology, which allows agents to persuade their opponents to commit suicide and attack their allies, among…

So… You Can Look At Syndicate’s Guns

UPDATE: Turns out there is a trailer, too. (Below.)This has to be one of the weirdest asset releases we've seen lately: a batch of screenshots in which the protagonist of Syndicate is having a good look at the gun that he's carrying. That's what it's about: admiring the shooting cylinder. Conveniently it features most of the guns you'll be toting in the game. So big.…

Darting Around: Syndicate Coop

There has already been a short trailer showing the chip-fipping, face-slamming action of the Syndicate reboot, this being the boot that may stamp on the face of your gaming past forever. This longer video shows an actual play session on the same map, jumping between agents' viewpoints to confuse me but otherwise giving a fairly good idea of how things will play out. There will…

Syndicoop: Four Men vs All The Other Men

A reasonable number of folk around these parts are, I think it's safe to sweepingly generalise, a little nonplussed that Starbreeze's Syndicate remake is going down the mostly linear manshooter path. All along, though, we've been told the game's four-player co-op mode would entail a more direct nod to the strategicish Bullfrog original. Is that, could that be, true? Time to find out.

Syndicate: Eurocorp Old & New

This is one for the young people, perhaps - as part of another trailer for the upcoming Syndicate enshooterising, we get a potted history of Bullfrog's original game. "A cyberpunk wonderland," apparently. Then it segues into a pic'n'mix of previous and new Syndishoot footage, and I guess we're supposed to think "gosh, the reticule-based adventures of MILES KILO sure are highly thematically similar to an…
