Former Valve artist’s portfolio includes mystery co-op fantasy game, rad female TF2 characters

Valve Software might possibly be making a cooperative fantasy game, or have at one time worked on, or thought about making, or doodled some ideas for one. This revelation comes from concept art in the portfolio of former Valve artist Drew Wolf. "The project was a fantasy adventure game centered around cooperative combat and driven by story," he says, though he doesn't explicitly say the…

Team Fortress 2 adds organ harvesting, many nerfs & more open development

Traditionally, Valve have maintained impossibly motionless poker faces about what they have planned in the longer term for Team Fortress 2 [official site] updates - something which helped to build insane degrees of anticipation back in the day, as we prayed and begged for videos and comics and guns and hats. These days, Overwatch seems to absorb most of the air in the room, and…

Valve crack down on Team Fortress 2 skin gambling

Valve have started cracking down more on sites using Team Fortress 2 [official site] items as chips in virtual gaming. Last year they focused on skin gambling with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive items, amidst scandals, more scandals, and lawsuits. Even the Washington State Gambling Commission got involved, ordering Valve to shut it all down. While Valve don't run any of these gambling sites, see, the sites…

Good will to all teams in TF2’s new autobalancing

Team Fortress 2 [official site] recognises that yes, Smissmas is a time for gibbing your fellow man then leaving their labelled hunks under the tree, but also somethings for coming-together. Valve's free-to-play FPS has kicked off its Christmas event with an update bringing the traditional assortment of new icy items but also handy features for casual play. A new team autobalancing systems gives players gifts…

Monday morning machinima: watch the Saxxy winners

What use are Saturday morning cartoons? Who's even around to see those? Mate, what I need is Monday morning cartoons. Some short fun cartoons around 10 on my first day back at work sounds just the ticket. So come on, let's enjoy the 2016 Saxxy Award finalists and winners. Valve unveiled this year's finest Source engine machinima on Friday night after I'd already flicked a…

Who’s Boo In Halloween Video Game Events

The Big Spooky isn't until Monday but plenty of games are already celebrating Halloween with special events for people with nerves of steel and eyes in the back of their head. If you're feeling extra brave, check out our collection of spookyspoos going on this weekend. This isn't a definitive list, mind, just a fair spread of things you might fancy trying. Do share your…

Scream Fortress VIII (EIGHT? Oh God, We Are Old)

Team Fortress 2's [official site] annual Hallowe'en festivities are upon us and, although there are nowhere near as many of them as Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror episodes, the Roman numerals are still contriving to make Alice feel hideously old. So that's something! So what's the haps this Hallowe'en-tide?

G-Man Tells Valve To ‘Stop Facilitating Gambling’

The Washington State Gambling Commission, a state agency governing gambling in that fair corner of Cascadia, has told Valve that they must "stop facilitating gambling" with Steam skins. If you've missed this whole fuss, basically: sites have been using Counter-Strike and Dota cosmetic item skins as chips for unregulated - and potentially underage - gambling, all running through Steam channels. Steam's rules do forbid this…

Valve Revise Team Fortress 2’s Casual Matchmaking

Valve launched matchmaking for Team Fortress 2 [official site] on Thursday but its reception wasn't wholly positive. As well as introducing 6v6 competitive ranked matchmaking, the Meet Your Match Update replaced TF2's casual 'quickplay' with 12v12 unranked matchmaking - and that second mode has frustrated some. Its problems included long waiting times and limited options, but Valve are working on those and more. Over the…

Team Fortress 2 Launches Matchmaking

Ranked matchmaking arrived in Team Fortress 2 [official site] overnight with the Meet Your Match Update, letting you and your pals leap in and scrap to prove you're the roughtest, toughest, point-caputringest mercs this side of Dustbowl. Or find out quite how bad you are. How confident do you feel? Valve have also launched a little contest to decide which character class will next receive…

Team Fortress 2’s Meet Your Match Update Announced

It's been a long time coming but matchmaking in Team Fortress 2 [official site] is almost here. Valve today announced the Meet Your Match update, which I imagine likely means it'll launch this week. Look forward to a ranked 6v6 mode, unranked 12v12 'quickplay', and all sorts of levels, medals, and statistics tracking your performance. Three new community-made maps are coming too, and sportsball mode…

Team Fortress 2’s Competitive Matchmaking Beta Plans

We've known for almost a year that Valve have been planning to add competitive matchmaking to Team Fortress 2 [official site] buuut well, I imagine Valve got distracted chasing a squirrel in the park or something. After many months of staring at the tree the squirrel vanished up, Valve have shook off their coating of snow and come back indoors to crack on with TF2's…

Team Fortress 2’s Tough Break Update Hits

Valve crept in during the night and left a little present under your Christmas PC (I've seen it, stuffed full of lights and gingerbread with a case window to show them off), a nice, big Team Fortress 2 [official site] update. Okay, yes, much of Tough Break Update is reserved for people who spend $6 to buy into the Tough Break 'Campaign' (a series of…

Machinimagic: Valve Announce Saxxy Award Winners

"Laughter is the best medicine," say people who are about to discover laughter actually makes a broken nose worse. Laughter's pretty okay, though, as are other emotions - and creative mediums can help stimulate them. Valve have rolled out the red carpet (it smells rusty?) for the year's finest Source Filmmaker machinima, little films mostly starring Valve characters, declaring which are the bestest best so…

Marvelous Machinima: Valve Open Saxxy Award Voting

Each year, Valve honour the finest Source Filmmaker creators with an imaginary gold statuette of a shirtless imaginary man with chest hair in the shape of imaginary country Australia. Ah, the Saxxy Awards! Saxxy season is upon us once again, and you - yes you! - can join movers, shakers, and thinkfluencers like Steven CP_Steelberg and Shia LaBadlands. Valve have opened up public voting on…

Team Fortress 2 Halloween Revives All Prior Halloweens

Sell your pumpkin heads! Team Fortress 2's [official site] Halloween event has launched. Scream Fortress runs from now through till November 11th, comes with a new comic, and introduces themed items, maps, taunts and an event that lets you win items from all previous Halloween events - presumably tanking the market for them in the process.

Team Fortress 2 Marks Halloween With Alien Invasion

As the march towards Halloween gains pace (seriously, where has this year disappeared to?!), Team Fortress 2 [official site] has launched a month-long Invasion event, spilling its community-curated guts in the form of new maps, weapons and items. The launch trailer is typically TF2 in its spectacle and flair and can be viewed without the use of 3D glasses inside.

Team Fortress TwoOoOO Crowdsourcing Halloween

Good news: Valve are working on a new "major update" for their free-to-play FPS Team Fortress 2 [official site]. Bad news: it's not a Halloween update. This new update has left the TF2 team too busy to create another all-spooking, all-devilling spectraltacular (boo!) so they're turning again to the community. This year's Halloween update will largely be pieced together from spooky maps, weapons, items, taunts,…

Bif! Bam! Pow! Team Fortress 2 Comic Issue #5 Out

I haven't played Team Fortress 2 [official site] in almost a year, Steam tells me, but by gum! I haven't stopped caring about the goofy world have created for their free-to-play FPS. Valve have some of the funniest fun in games, and I don't especially mind if the yaks come through webcomics rather than computer games. While we were on holiday on Monday, Valve released…

Team Fortress 2 Gets New Ball Sport PASS Time Mode

Isn't it nice when companies become friends? Valve and Bad Robot, J. J. Abrams production company responsible for TV shows like Lost and movies like Super 8, have teamed up to produce a new mode for Team Fortress 2 [official site]. It's called PASS Time and it blends Team Fortress 2 with the "fast-paced sports of soccer, hockey and basketball."
