Saturday morning MMO WildStar is dead now

The sci-fi frontier of WildStar can be frontiered no more. The rootin’ tootin’ MMO shut down last night, ending four and a half years of exploration, mob killing, and house-having. There was a big party in a tiny village, where everyone gathered and laggily danced to celebrate the final moments of this cartoonish game of cowboys ‘n’ aliens. Bye bye, robots. Bye bye, vicious beasts…

WildStar shutting down on November 28th, heralded by special events

Following NCSoft's recent announcement that they've shut down Carbine Studios and close their game WildStar, we now know just when the sci-fi MMORPG will shut down: November 28th. They're hoping to send it off with a bang, at least. Special seasonal events will return over the coming weeks, rewards and drops have been massively boosted to get everyone the good stuff, and all players are…

WildStar Gets Redmoon Mutiny Raid Update Next Month

If you're one of NCSoft's WildStar's [official site] biggest fans (or are actually playing it, are people still playing it?) you'll be happy to know that Carbine Studios has confirmed there's an update coming. Named Redmoon Mutinty, it's scheduled to hit this November with additions including PvP leaderboards and cross-faction raid and dungeon groups.

WildStar Devs Reportedly Lay Off 70 People

On Friday, WildStar [official site] publisher NCSoft announced that a "reorganisation" of Carbine Studio's "operating structure" had resulted in staff layoffs at the developer. While there's been no official mention of exactly how many folk have been made redundant, reports suggest more than 70 employees were shown the door - as much as 40 percent of the studio's total staff.

Wildstar Gets Chilly With Destination Arcterra

I'm currently re-installing Wildstar [official site]. Well, sort of. I'm installing the public test realm so I can go investigate the sci-fi western MMO's new zone, Arcterra. It's very blue and I wanted to do a screenshot tour. While that happens (and while I try to stream a Dota 2 tournament and thus the process takes even longer) I am reading the blog to find…

WildStar Is Free-To-Play As Of Today

After a few weeks of running on test servers, WildStar [official site] is officially free-to-play as of today. That means you can play the scifi western MMO without a subscription, though existing subscribers who keep paying will get various bonuses and extras to reward them for their loyalty. Hop below for a finely animated CG launch trailer.

WildStar [official site] is going free-to-play, breaking loose from the shackles of a subscription model in order to let new players through the front doors for nothing. Before that happens, NCSoft are running a closed beta for the new version of the game, and we've got 5000 keys to giveaway if you want to try it out. Hop below to find out how to get…

Dancing Like A: WildStar Going F2P This Month

Giorgio Moroder and Foxes' jumpy discodance song Wildstar was probably not the inspiration for Carbine's MMORPG WildStar [official site] (the MMO came first - but that's the only reason this can't be true), but Wildstar has the same bouncy, fun tone that seemed to set WildStar apart from oh-so-serious other WoW fangames. I've wanted to check WildStar out but don't have the attention/inattention span to…

Carbine Talk WildStar And The Plan For 2015

WildStar developers Carbine have released their 2015 roadmap for the game, which includes better preparing lower level players for combat and offering news types of challenge across playstyles and group sizes. Towards the end of 2014, Carbine's product director, Mike Donatelli, admitted that players complaining about the release of buggy content led the team to focus on improving the quality of their output – that's…

WildStar Cancels Christmas, Hallowe’en, No Word On Pancake Day

Can you imagine having to tell all the players of an MMO that Christmas is cancelled? That there will be no twinkly lights in pine trees or fine dustings of snow offering the chance to feel festive while simultaneously escaping your nearest and dearest? That actually you're not only cancelling Christmas but Hallowe'en as well? That's what WildStar developers Carbine have had to do. The…

WildStar Raids Reveal Big Bosses And Random Bits

All and sundry can currently check out the early-mid game of WildStar, as Carbine's MMORPG is still in open beta testing until early Monday morning, but what about the supposed real part of MMORPGs, the end-game--raiding? The lastest part of WildStar's slow marketing reveal focuses on just that, detailing raiding with words and pictures and moving pictures. The word "hardcore" is muttered a lot during…

Oh WoW: WildStar Open Beta Now Open

Of all the MMORPGs that a barroom wit might dismiss with the wave of a hand and a smug "It's just another WoW clone, and I'll have a pint of Advocaat thank you barkeep," WildStar certainly seems to be the most polished and enticing. Carbine Studios have tarted up That Sort of MMORPG with fancier combat, additions like player housing and PvP death arenas that…

Wildstar’s Customizable PVP Death Fortresses Look Brilliant

"Warplot" may sound a bit funny (especially if you're John and immediately think up the phrase "Warplop"), but Wildstar's ambitious system of customizable 40vs40 PVP battlefields is anything but. The basic idea is that you have a "warparty" that jointly owns a massive hovering deathboat (aka, a warplot), and you can deck it out with everything from traps to murderbots to turrets to something called…

Something For The Weekend: Wildstar Beta Key Giveaway

Listen! This weekend, the beta for Wildstar is opening up and 40,000 keys are available right now. First come, first served. Our first feature about the sci-fi MMO went live in August 2011, which is approximately fifty seven years ago in blog years. WildStar’s Engineer Class Detailed, Plus Brief Thoughts

Carbine Studios was founded in 2005 and the past eight years have been spent building the tech and content for their first game, WildStar. A cartoonish sci-fi MMO, WildStar's main aim is to acknowledge the multitude of reasons why people play MMOs, and cater to each and every one of them. Come watch the final class trailer, introducing the game's robot-spewing Engineer, and I'll explain…

Money Grinding: Lineage Makes $1.8 Billion Over 15 Years

Lineage, the Korean fantasy MMO from NCSoft, is fifteen years old. In that time, it has made the equivalent of $1.8 billion. This as reported by PCGamesN reporting on Kotaku, as based on a press release that's in Korean, anyway. Numbers like this are why companies remain willing to make such large, long bets on MMOs. I talked to Jeremy Gaffney, former NCSoft executive and…

Nightcrawler In A Cowboy Hat: WildStar’s Spellslinger

Hello, WildStar. It is good to see that you are still around and doing things. What have you been up to since last I praised your smart ability mechanics, targeting systems, and appealing candy coated gumdrop style while also lamenting that kill/collect MMOs bore me to tears these days? Oh, you've been showing off atypical classes, have you? And you say this "Spellslinger" is hyper-mobile…
