Tank football returns to World of Tanks for the World Cup

The World Cup, I have been reliably informed, is very much going on at the moment, pitting nation against nation in a desperate battle to become Football King for the next four years. Normally, it’s a humans-only sporting event, with FIFA banning animals, household appliances and even tanks from participating. Wargaming has corrected the latter, at least, by once again kicking off a summer of…

Wargaming Seattle, aka Gas Powered Games, to close

Wargaming, the folks behind free-to-play mega-hit World Of Tanks, have confirmed that they are closing the Seattle studio formerly known as Gas Powered Games. Y'know, Gas Powered, the Supreme Commander and Dungeon Siege lot. 150 people had been working at Wargaming Seattle on an unannounced MMO, the company said, but the studio is closing as Wargaming restructures.

Tanks ever so much! World of Tanks adds 30v30 battles

The free-to-play arcade tank battles of World of Tanks [official site] today get a whole lot bigger with the official launch of a new 30v30 mode. Grand Battles is its name, and grand battles is its game. Along with bringing a higher playercount -- double the regular high of 15v15 -- Grand Battles packs a large new map, Nedelburg, suited to megafights. Only Tier X…

Splash Damage working with World of Tanks company on something warnew

Splash Damage, the studio behind Enemy Territory and Dirty Bomb, have joined forces with the World of Tanks/Warplanes/Warships lords at Wargaming to work on "new gaming experiences". No specific game is announced yet but huh, I am always curious to see what Splash Damage do. It seems not impossible that Splash Damage might make some sort of objective-driven multiplayer FPS in the Enemy Territory mould,…

World of Tanks 30v30 mode Frontline hits test server

Free-to-play tank shooter World of Tanks [official site] today launches a new 30v30 mode on its test server. Frontline mode sees 60 tanks throwing down, one team attacking and trying to push forward to capture and unlock new areas of the map, while the other tries to fend them off. The regular World of Tanks maximum is 15v15 so 30v30 is a big step up,…

Capture Tank Flag: World Of Tanks Domination Mode

World of Tanks [official site] is hardly a simulator, but if you fancy pootling around in tank battles that are a little more arcadey, you're in luck. Developers Wargaming have kicked off the free-to-play game's Domination event, which for one month adds a new mode that has tanks zooming around trying to capture flags, with respawning, repair and ammo pickup points, nae friendly fire, and…

War Games: Meet The World’s Best World Of Tanks Team

From a two-day event of brutality and tough but somehow sensual tank action has emerged a single victor. Wargaming [official website] has announced the winners of its official Dudes Who Are The Best Ever At Playing World Of Tanks award, better known as the Grand Finals Champions of Wargaming eSports Poland 2015. The winner is a group of Russia-born lads called HellRaisers.

Bombs Away: $300K In Prizes At World Of Tanks Finals

Did you leave the house today? Did you sense something in the air? That electricity is the feeling I exude when I hear about how I could have had a career making $300,000 playing World of Tanks [official website] in Warsaw if I hadn't spent my formative years on my "education." This weekend is the Grand Finals for the Wargaming.net League, a big eSports expo that's…

What Are You Playing This Weekend?

It's time to wrap up warm, RPS - thank goodness you've got just so many fetching scarves. The winter months are rolling in, which makes for the perfect excuse to build an intricate blanket fort around your chair and go into a weekend games-hibernation. It'll be a tough life of hot chocolate and mince pies, but I believe in you and think you'll come out…

Gunners For Goalposts – World of Tanks: Football Edition

Given its low media coverage, limited popularity and remote location, you might be forgiven for not knowing that the FIFA World Cup of foot-to-ball football soccer begins today. But it does - this very afternoon! I guess someone at Wargaming.net must have fortuitously discovered the information while browsing Wikipedia, because they've found the time to put together a special Football Battles mode for World of…

Rounding Off: World Of Tanks Prettification

Here's an interesting aspect of long-term game development: if you build a game where you're continually adding units across a number of years, you will see a marked difference in model quality between the first creations and the newer models. It can't be helped. For some games that might not matter, but World of Tanks is about tanks and the people who love to pay…

World Of Tanks Getting Gloriously Detailed Destructibility

Destructo-porn ahoy! World of Tanks continues to be massively (almost bewilderingly) popular, but there's no two ways about it: its underlying systems are getting a little creaky. Thus, Wargaming is getting ready to oil up the free-to-play phenom's crunchiest gears by introducing large-scale destructibility. When shells hit buildings, they will crumble literally brick-by-brick. Unless they are not made of bricks, in which case they will…

Free Shells: Wargaming.net Scrap Pay To Win

Wargaming.net believe that war should take place on a level playing field. Money may make the world go round but it won't buy you any extra-powerful rounds for your weaponry, whether those weapons be attached to tanks, planes or automobiles ships. In an interview with Gamasutra, Andrei Yarantsau, VP of publishing at the Belarusian behemoth, stated that the World of Tanks and other forthcoming titles,…

World Of Tanks Chinese Tanks Now Tanks… Er, Live

I can't be the only one who appreciates the ever-narrowing gap between official World of Tanks footage and nature documentaries, can I? There's a certain grace to their low-speed loping, and recent products of Wargaming's virtual camerawork have captured that in a way that just begs for overly embellished narration. But I digress. New tanks! After originally being announced for update 8.2, Chinese tanks are…

World Of Tanks Adding Chinese Pottery. Kidding: Tanks

Well, that was quick. World of Tanks' Britain-themed 8.1 update - unfortunately not titled "Sir, You Are Being Hunted (By Tanks)" - came out just a hair over a week ago, and now Wargaming's already rallying the troops for update 8.2. This time around, the focus is mainly on a new Chinese tank tree, which actually houses creaking death machines you can buy in succession,…

The British Are Coming! World Of Tanks Stiffens Upper Lip

I was thinking, seeing that World Of Tanks has unveiled its 8.1 update with accompanying video, that this isn't a Halloweeny thing. What are they doing releasing it today? And then it occurred to me: tanks are actually scary. Ghosts and monsters may be the more traditional source of chills, but their overall efficacy at being frightening is somewhat limited by their not existing. Tanks…

Star Citizen’s Big Influences: Demon’s Souls, Real Life

Star Citizen – the newest and spacest thing from mighty commander of all wings, Chris Roberts – sounds impossibly good. And I do mean that, but with more emphasis on the “impossible” part than I'd like. No doubt, Roberts is completely brilliant, but he's proposing a project of utterly mad ambition. Naturally, it's made me a bit skeptical. That said, an hour-long chat during GDC…

Wuh Oh: PlaySpan Got Hacked, World Of Tanks Affected

You're familiar with the routine by now. If you've got a World Of Tanks account and bought anything, to be sure change your password, and any passwords associated with it. And if you're still not using unique passwords per account, go change all the others too. PlaySpan, the software World Of Tanks uses for financial transactions in WoT and a thousand other games, has been…

Clan Wars To Connect World of Tanks And Warplanes

Believe it or not, most of the wars waged over the course of human history haven't been confined to a single variety of vehicle at all times. I mean, tanks are great and all, but they're a bit rubbish when it comes to swimming and flying, and I imagine the subtle nuances of both thumb wars and food fights elude them as well. So Wargaming, naturally,…
