The best free games are on PC, and if you want to know what the best 50 are then you’ve come to the right place.
RPS Feature No free-to-play, just free.
Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.
I should’ve mentioned 2:22AM in our end-of-year-wrap-up-o-rama. It still lurks in the back of my head, popping into my thoughts at unexpected moments, and I think lots of folks might like it if they knew about it. So I’ll ask: have you played 2:22AM? Masquerading as an eerie late-night public access television broadcast, it feels more like a dream than any other game I’ve played.
RPS Feature A bit moony
Without tarot to draw, tea leaves to swirl, crystals to tune, bones to cast, or ants to observe, this summer I turned to video games for divination. I watched between the static of late-night TV, chatted with hitch-hikers, listened to a mountain, sought forest spirits, and even consulted an oracle.
“Play alone,” 2:22AM instructs. “Play at night.”
Approach in that dreamy state of mind and it flickers into life, drawing you into an eerie late-night public access television show. 2:22AM’s a free game made of little vignettes from mundanities like frying an egg to, well, things more surreal and sinister, mixed with bleary video clips and wrapped up in analogue crackle and tracking errors. It’s wonderful to play in that time when the world’s still and blinks are drawn-out rests for your eyes, dreams creeping in around the edges. But if you’re too drowsy for that, the wonders of video mean you can watch me play.
