The Flare Path: Gongs and Gripes

Although Combat Mission: Beyond Overlord doesn’t do medals, The Flare Path does. If you’ve been following the fortunes of Caent’s doughty defenders for the past three weeks, you may be interested to learn that a) the scenario used is now available for download, and b) several units involved in the action were decorated for their efforts.

(This week’s FP also includes some impressions of 303 Squadron: Battle of Britain, an Early Access air combat game that’s more Defiant than Spitfire at the moment.)

The Flare Path: No Respite

War-weary after fourteen days of communal Combat Mission battle reports? Today’s competition and collection of news stories probably won’t help. Apart from a bit of Deadstick pre-alpha footage, and a poor-quality phone snap of two de Havilland beauties I encountered on a recent excursion, everything in today’s FP indirectly celebrates state-sanctioned murder.

The Flare Path: How’s it going?

Operation Pump Handle went rather well, all things considered. Of the ten peanut-powered mechanical magpies dispatched on Monday morning, nine returned home with sim developer status reports in their leg canisters. Only Domino (destination Deadstick) is still out there somewhere. The Flare Path: West London Lines

Everyone in my street marks Battle of Britain Day in their own way. At some point today Old Mrs Walley at no.11 will set light to a garden bonfire topped by a life-size Herman Goering effigy, Mr Moulden at no. 27 will victory-roll his radio-controlled Spitfire over the village war memorial, I’ll fly a BoB2 sortie or two, and Miss Hughes at Steepcott Farm will go into town and find and hug a random Pole. The Flare Path: Slightly Dead

The compiler of this column has always been, and will always be, an equal opportunities emplaner. Just because a flight game is Dimensionally Challenged – just because its spread of sky lacks a North and South, or an East and West – doesn’t mean I won’t clutch it to my kitten-clawed bosom or spit scalding Criti-Bile™ in its eye. Unhappily, 2D flight games with a modicum of respect for realism are rarer than rocking horseflies these days. Some might even go so far as saying the sub-genre is slightly dead.
