Immersive sim Consortium: The Tower hits early access

One grand dream of the immersive sim genre is Deus Ex director Warren Spector’s one city block, an idea for a game simulating one city block and its inhabitants in great detail to set up so many systems to play with. Consortium: The Tower [official site] might not have the dream’s full detail but it is a pretty complex immersive sim and it is set in one single block – a mile-high futuretower currently occupied by terrorists. It’s the sequel to 2014’s Consortium, which was set on a single plane, and it looks fascinating. The full launch is still a way away but The Tower does today launch into early access for the curious. Consortium: The Tower Hits Funding Goal On Fig

Consortium is a very RPS-y sort of a game – real-time adventure-o-roleplaying, story branches, a big plane, conspiracy, complex social relationships, fourth wall-poking, a bit of wonkiness, and all that jazz. Here, read this for a short take or this for a longer one. Developers Interdimensional Games fell far short when they tried to crowdfund sequel Consortium: The Tower [official site] – pitched as ‘Deus Ex meets Die Hard’ – on Kickstarter earlier this year, but they’ve since launched a new campaign on Fig and hit their goal. Huzzah!

Towering: Consortium Free Until Noon Tomorrow

Consortium [official site] is a fascinating game and I’ll go into a proper sulk if the sequel’s Kickstarter fails. Things aren’t looking good, with $310,000 left to raise and only a week of the campaign left. The original is an immersive sim that feels like a version of the ‘single city block’ game. One location and characters that seem to exist and act even when the player isn’t there to watch them. To raise awareness of the sequel and its potential qualities, the original is freely available from GOG until 1:59pm GMT tomorrow.

Deus Ex Plus Die Hard: Consortium – The Tower

As pitches go, Consortium: The Tower [official site] has a bloody good line up its sleeve. Like its predecessor, it’s a science fiction game set in a single environment. You can talk, fight or sneak your way past or through encounters, and many events will happen even if you’re not there to see or influence them. Everything takes place in real-time and though the fourth wall trembles and breaks, the emphasis is on immersion. And that pitch line? “Imagine the original Deus Ex combined with the film Die Hard.” OK. I am.

Consortium: The Tower Prophecy Trailer Falls On London

I haven’t played Consortium [official site], but I’ve read enough to know I should. Consortium was an RPG which favored social interaction over combat, a story that could turn out a dozen different ways, and an ambitious attempt to create a lot of the things people say they want.

So maybe you also want a follow-up, set in a new place, with new characters, but expanding on the same ideas. That’s what Consortium: The Tower Prophecy [official site] aims to be, and there’s a teaser trailer below.
