It’s time for the inhabitants of the intensely haunted continent of Wraeclast to do it all again with feeling. Path of Exile has expanded, with War For The Atlas bringing new content and mechanics to the post-story multiverse, and the Abyss Challenge League adding a (literal) fresh hell to explore.

Last week, I got to take an early peek at Path of Exile‘s upcoming War For The Atlas expansion, set to release free for all on December 8th. As impressive as it looks, it is geared heavily towards the more hardcore end of the playerbase: those who have conquered the main story and hunger for more challenge.

For the less experienced or dedicated among us, there is a sizable chunk of new content on the way focused around the Abyss league, their latest game-changing seasonal event. Grinding Gear Games have just announced exactly what the new league is all about.

Path Of Exile’s endgame expands yet again next month in War For The Atlas

Path of Exile is already a very big, very demanding game. Ever since its first public beta debut, the free-to-play action RPG has grown steadily, layering new content and mechanics onto an already complex design. With the release of the massive Fall Of Oriath expansion back in August it grew into one of the largest action-RPGs ever made, ballooning from four acts (played three times on escalating difficulty settings) to a single ten-act campaign taking you all the way from opening to endgame.

As well as more than doubling the length of the game’s story, Fall Of Oriath escalated from fantasy horror into a frenzy of apocalyptic God Of War-esque bloodshed, with you personally offing the majority of the world’s deities over the course of the story. This December 8th, Grinding Gear Games hope to give successful godslayers a fitting endgame experience with their next expansion, War For The Atlas. I got to talk with producer Chris Wilson, who was eager to show off some of the new features and content in action, as well as share some details on what War For The Atlas brings to the table.

Path of Exile finally has an official (beta) trading hub

Path of Exile is an excellent ARPG built on top of an unusual economy, where every item – even the most throwaway of identification scrolls – has intrinsic value in both usage and trade. There’s no gold or even premium currency used in-game at all, and to top it all off, there is no auction house. The only way to exchange gear is direct; player to player.

For the longest time, Path of Exile’s trade system has been a jury-rigged and unusual thing, routed through third-party sites tapping into an official API which allows item stashes to be shared online and prices posted, although the trade itself always has to happen face-to-face in-game. This week, Grinding Gear Games cut out at least half of a middle-man, launching their own trade network site, currently in beta.

Path of Exile launches expansion The Fall of Oriath today

The free-to-play Path of Exile [official site], Adam’s favourite action-RPG, will launch its ‘The Fall of Oriath’ expansion tonight. This is a big’un, adding Act Five to finish the story and whacking in five more acts based on the regular five to replace the higher difficulty levels. That’s a whole lot of monstermashing. The update is due to go live at 9pm so why am I telling you now? 1) Because I hope to have finished work before then. 2) Pre-loading has begun. 3) Because the huge v3.0.0 patch notes are now live so clickheads can spend the next six hours poring over them. Path of Exile’s Fall of Oriath expansion hits August 4th

Fine free-to-play action-RPG Path of Exile will launch its next expansion on August 4th, developers Grinding Gear Games announced last night. The expansion, named The Fall of Oriath [official site], will introduce a new act sending players back to the land they were exiled from. Time for some frank conversations with the ruling powers, I’m sure. On top of that, the expansion boshes in remixes of all five acts, revisiting them to see how they’ve changed since you murderously swept through and whacked everyone until they burst into showers of coins and swords. Why Path Of Exile is my favourite action RPG

I’m not sure there’s a more dangerous, time-consuming diversion in gaming than a good ARPG and Path of Exile [official site] is a very good ARPG. It doesn’t have the dynamic world of a Soldak release or the exquisite polish and crunch of Diablo III, but after playing for more hours than I care to mention, I’m still peeling back layers of the character system. In many RPGs, characters become more fixed as they grow but in Exile, a high-level character is a broader foundation for possible builds rather than a specialist.

There’s a major expansion, Fall of Oriath, coming soon, and I’ll be looking into the future of the game shortly, but before I do that, I’m going to explain why this is my favourite modern ARPG.

Podcast: The Electronic Wireless Show talks Gamelab, the airships of Worlds Adrift, and horror of Get Even

Path Of Exile Teases New Pets, Tortoise OP Speed Demon

An update due Wednesday (19 August) will bring six (6) new flavours of pet to Path of Exile [official site]. They include the fastest tortoise I’ve ever seen and a well-behaved lemur. Also a pukeko which I didn’t know was a real bird until now. I’m mostly posting about this because it let me assess a bunch of digital pets.

Wakey Wakey, Axe & Stakey: Path Of Exile Expansion Out

Diablo III was pretty disappointing when it arrived, but Blizzard were allowed plenty of time to fix it up into its current pleasant state because many clickfans found themselves distracted by Path of Exile [official site] anyway. Grinding Gear Games have continued to improve their free-to-play action-RPG all the while too, of course. Today (this very minute, if all goes to plan) they launch The Awakening, which they call “the biggest and most far-reaching expansion of the game to date”. Sez you, sunshine.

Path of Exile Expansion Launching Next Week

Where fellow action-RPGs Diablo III and Torchlight exulted in bright colors and a brazen use of particle effects, the free-to-play Path of Exile [official site] took a darker turn, wearing its grime like a king’s crown. And it did well that way, honestly. Our very own Adam called it a “smart and content-rich RPG.” And said smart and content-rich RPG will see its newest expansion, titled The Awakening, come July 10th.

Rise And Shine: Path Of Exile’s Expansion The Awakening

Back when our Adam had a good play of free-to-play click ’em up action-RPG Path of Exile [official site], he called it “a smart and content-rich ARPG”, saying “It doesn’t rewrite the click-for-loot formula but it does tweak just the right parts to make the repetitious hacking and casting a more involved and intricate experience.” Sounds good, that. It’s soon to get even more things to click on, as developers Grinding Gear Games have announced the next expansion.

POE Face: Path Of Exile – Forsaken Masters

I was one of the first to walk to the Path of Exile but one of the last to submit a complete traveller’s guide. Of course, the term ‘complete’ is meaningless when developers insist on releasing new (free) content for their (free) games. Lonely Planet guide writers don’t have this problem – it’s not as if a country would suddenly expand its borders to bring in new attractions, resources and skillsets. Forsaken Masters adds NPCs who provide players with missions in exchange for training, as well as customisable hideouts.

Wot I Think: Path Of Exile

Sometimes it takes a while to make a judgement. I spent a fair amount of time with Path Of Exile’s beta but hadn’t revisited the release version for more than seven or eight hours in total until I decided to write something about it a few weeks ago. Now that I’ve been back to the grim shores of Wraeclast for a long vacation and have stared deep into the heart of the passive skill tree’s labyrinth depths, I’m ready to tell you wot I think.

Die-aspora: Path Of Exile Adds Sacrifice Of The Vaal

Path Of Exile has expandamofied. The enormously successful online aRPG has been out of beta since October, with estimates showing approximately 13 billion people are playing at any one time. (These are my estimates, based on my inability to count.) And now there’s more of it. Sacrifice Of The Vaal pours in a ton of new content to satisfy hungry, hungry gamers.
