Umm, OK: The War Z Is Out Now, I Think

Oh, hm. Well, this comes as something of a surprise. Not terribly long ago, The War Z ventured out from the safe embrace of alpha into the unknown reaches of beta, and now it’s… live? I think? The undead-infested MMO shooter’s shambled onto Steam, and Hammerpoint’s declaring this a “Foundation Release.” Which – from what I gather – is like a normal release, but with the promise of heaps of new features in the very near future. There might even be zombies involved. There is, believe it or not, precedent for this.

The War Z Beta Iz Ztarting Zoon

And then, when we've finally defeated the zombies, the trees will make their move.

If The War Z were some form of night-walking terror creature that’s traditionally been slotted into either fast or slow categories – let’s say a gerbil – it’d definitely end up as the former. Hammerpoint’s permadeath-optional zombie MMO burst onto the scene earlier this year, and it’s kept up a rather unbelievable pace ever since. And now, both alpha and beta are right around the corner. I mean that, too. Go look around the corner. They’re right there. And hey, you can participate if you’d like.

The War Z: Alive And Kicking?

What's that coming over the hill?

I hear some very strange rumours about DayZ, er, contemporary The War Z‘s genesis and fears about the speed and timing at which it’s apparently happening, but I am reluctant to detail/opine upon them until things seem more sure. In the meantime, I can wave you cautiously at a bunch of in-game footage of the open-world zombie survival MMOette (sound familiar? Of course it does) from PAX, and leave you to draw your own conclusions about whether this is a goer or not. We’ve seen very little of it in action until now, and now we, er, do.

Pre-Undead: The War Z Beta Is Proving Popular

MMO players lining up for their next fix.

The War Z isn’t the same game as Day Z. That’s the sort of mantra I have to recite to myself, especially a week after I confused Watch Dogs with Sleeping Dogs. Videogames – get more distinct names! War Z is of course an MMO about zombies, rather than… whatever genre Day Z fits into. And they’ve just announced they’ve had more than 100,000 registrations for their closed beta, so clearly there’s a lot of interest out there for it. If you want to join in with that interest, there’s now a proper website for it.

Deja Vu Z: The War Z Has Zombies, Permadeath

Another thing Day Z doesn't have: vaguely ironic placement of Stop signs.

The universe is weird sometimes. See, The War Z is not – nor, based on development time, could it be – entirely a Day Z clone. Yes, it’s an MMO with (optional) permadeath set in a  “post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested world where other players can prove to be a greater threat than the undead hordes that populate the land,” but it began development last year and is set to launch this fall. So while I imagine there’s some inspiration, it seems to have overlapped with one of those strange situations where a bunch of people in different parts of the world had many of the same ideas at once. And, encouragingly, The War Z looks to set itself apart with a very strong Fallout-ish RPG streak as well.
