A Game Of Resources: A Game Of Dwarves

Apart from singing the ‘gold’ song, pondering each other’s gender, and quaffing, digging is what dwarves do. (Do you mean Gold? Because that is definitely what dwarves should sing – Ed) A Game Of Dwarves focuses on the digging. You dig your digs, starting from the throne of the head Dwarf and spreading out in all directions, expanding your underground empire, adding rooms in the increasingly unwelcoming nethers. It’s a slick little strategy management game, welcoming to those who look at such things and wonder where the crosshair is. Me, basically. The man from Paradox wiped away my tears and showed me the easy way it works, and after pointing and clapping I got to it.

Paradox Party: Four Games Streamed Tonight

Better than Eastenders
Paradox Interactive are getting a taste for the limelight. Mmm, citrussy. Tonight at 8PM CEST, which my brain refuses to accept is 7pm UK time, they’ll be showing off four of their upcoming games on their Twitch TV channel. There’s something for everyone, as long as you like 2D shooters, dwarf-based strategy, co-op action adventures , or competitive RTS. Do you like those? I’m interested in The Showdown Effect, personally. He’s dreamy.

Welcome Gnome: A Game Of Dwarves Dev Diary

Zeal Game Studio’s Robin Flodin goes into a bit more detail on the development of A Game Of Dwarves in a new developer diary, which you can see below. He discusses the management of your dwarves, building your economy, and the open-ended building/management challenge that the game offers. Dealing with dungeons full of monsters becomes an issue, too, says Flodin, and he explains that this aspect becomes “tower defense-ish” as you work out how to deal with enemies.

There are also neutral gnomes.

A Transcript Of A Chat Of A Game Of Dwarves

‘Twas just a few days past that I had a chat with Robin Flodin of Zeal Game Studio, the folks behind Paradox’s forthcoming game about dwarves, A Game Of Dwarves. The game seems to be a mixture of the old Bullfrog games and, well, a rather more recent experiment in dwarf simulation, and certainly warrants deeper investigation. I asked Mr Florin about what he was actually trying to do in a game where dwarves dig deep, and build shiny things.

Paradox Hint At Three New Games, Revealed Next Month

I prefer tulips.

Paradox have announced their line-up for next month’s GDC and it contains three new games. They’re waiting until the convention to say what they are, but they’ve dropped some hints and codenames, including a new game from the Magicka team, an action multiplayer.

A Game Of Dwarves Announcement Trailer

We mentioned Paradox’s upcoming dwarf-management game, A Game Of Dwarves, earlier in the week, but there was also an announcement trailer, which you can see below. I had a quick chat with the team when I was at Paradox’s event in Sweden this week, so I’ll post that as soon as I’ve got it written up. I should say though that they were super-keen to stress that all the stuff we’ve seen of the game so far is super-earlier, and that it is not yet feature-complete.

Paradox Announces A Game Of Dwarves

Yup, that's a dwarf alright.

In a one-two punch of Paradox news, our man in the field, Jim Rossignol, has sent a telegram from Sweden reporting that the publishers have announced A Game Of Dwarves. STOP. It’s a strategy-cum-management game, by Zeal Game Studios, in which you must control a dwarven settlement. It has a Theme Hospital meets Dungeon Keeper vibe about it, with a sprinkling of Settlers, and of course a lot of Dwarf Fortress, as you manage your crew of dwarves to dig, build and defend themselves. It’s going to be randomly generated, meaning each time you start a new game it’ll be a completely unique dungeon, requiring new strategies. We’ll have more information just as soon as Jim can find the internet. The game is supposed to be coming out at some point during 2012. You can see a collection of screenshots below.
