Podcast: The worst games of the year

House Party: a bad game

We’ve told you about the most overlooked games and what has us excited for next year, but we haven’t had a good grump yet on the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show. So this week the team discuss the worst games they played in 2017. John thinks the misogyny of House Party puts it firmly in the bin, and Brendan is still wiping the red dust from his eyes after woeful survival game Rokh. But Matt can’t bring himself to call any game terrible, not even Star Wars Battlefront 2.

It’s not all negative vibes, however. We’ve also been smiling at pretty and poignant Gorogoa, climbing a mountain in Getting Over It, and shooting our way through Destiny 2‘s Curse of Osiris expansion. We’re only a bit scroogey. Read the rest of this entry »

Report: layoffs at Saints Row dev Volition

Saints Row and Agents of Mayhem studio Volition has laid off about 15% of its employees this week, according to a Kotaku report citing three unnamed sources. While layoffs after a big game launches aren’t uncommonas studios become far less busy (Agents of Mayhem came out last month), reportedly Volition general manager Dan Cermak was among those let go – and that is a touch more rare. Or so the reports say. Supposedly parent company Deep Silver was unhappy with sales of Agents. That’s not surprising, as it hasn’t made much of an impact and our John’s Agents of Mayhem review just didn’t like it that much. Read the rest of this entry »

Wot I Think: Agents Of Mayhem

Agents Of Mayhem [official site] should not be judged for not being a Saints Row game. Volition are under no obligation to keep making that series, even after they struck on such extraordinary gold with SR III and IV. Agents Of Mayhem loosely shares the same universe, albeit mostly via the presence of the colour purple and fleurs-de-lis. There are also a few half-familiar character names, and a DLC that lets you add Johnny Gat into the mix, but beyond this AoM and SR are separate games. Different types of games. You can’t measure Agents Of Mayhem against Saints Row in a sensible way. Still, it doesn’t stop them trying, and, well, you know, it’s nowhere near as good as the recent Saints Row games. Here’s wot I think. Read the rest of this entry »

Agents of Mayhem trailer features Johnny Gat as Magnum PI

Agents of Mayhem [official site], the explosion-laden singleplayer shooter from the creators of Saints Row, is shaping up rather nicely by all accounts. And by ‘all accounts’ I mean the accounts of both Holly and Adam, who enjoyed the over-the-top action of separate preview builds.

It’s just got a new trailer showing a man punching a car into lots of others cars, which all go boom, and a woman dancing on massive gun while screaming “I call this the Chicago deep dish”. Erm…okay. Oh, and there’s a Magnum PI cosplay from returning Saints Row favourite Johnny Gat. Because why not.

Volition’s Agents of Mayhem introduces shootstars

A new vidvad for Agents of Mayhem [official site], the upcoming singleplayer class-based shooter from Saints Row devs Volition, shows off several of its characters with pomp and explosions. The game hasn’t looked megagreat to my spectating eye but Holly Nielsen dug the preview version she played recently and Adam before her liked it too, so I’ll see how it goes. For now, the answer is: with jokes and explosions. Read the rest of this entry »

Agents of Mayhem blasting onto PC August 18

Agents of Mayhem

Agents Of Mayhem [official site] – the Volition cartoony third-person, open world action adventure set in the near future of the Saints Row universe – now has a release date. It’s August 18th (15th in North America), which is also Antonio Salieri’s birthday. Volition have also released a new trailer but it doesn’t mention Salieri NOR does it use the music of Salieri so please moderate your expectations appropriately: Read the rest of this entry »

Agents Of Mayhem builds upon Saints Row in every way

Skating around as a roller derby player who is gleefully belching and swearing as she sprays enemies with bullets from her minigun, it’s difficult not to have at least a little fun while playing Volition’s new third-person open world action adventure RPG. Taking place within the same universe as their Saints Row series, Agents of Mayhem [official site] has the same irreverent humour, and this time is poking fun at superhero groups. The PC games of 2017 mega-preview

As Old Father Time grabs his sickle and prepares to take ailing 2016 around the back of the barn for a big sleep, we’re looking to the future. The mewling pup that goes by the name 2017 will come into the world soon and we must prepare ourselves for its arrival. Here at RPS, our preparations come in the form of this enormous preview feature, which contains details on more than a hundred of the exciting games that are coming our way over the next twelve months. 2016 was a good one – in the world of games at least – but, ever the optimists, we’re hoping next year will be even better.

Super Saints: Hands On With Agents Of Mayhem

Agents Of Mayhem [official site] explicitly plants Saints Row in a futureworld of supervillains and interplanetary metahuman agencies. I use the word ‘explicitly’ because Saints Row IV was already at least part way there, using the grammar of a superhero comic if not the language. I played through a mission of Mayhem recently and while I immediately missed some aspects of Saints Row, as an action game, Agents is streets ahead.

Not Saints Row: See Volition’s Agents Of Mayhem

The next game from Saints Row developers Volition is not another open crimeworld, but it is… what is it? The announcement of Agents of Mayhem [official site] last week explained it was some sort of third-person, class-based shooter but now you can see quite what that means in the first gameplay footage out of E3. The answer is: yeah, it is some sort of third-person, class-based shooter, and it looks a bit bum? See for yourself.

Saints Row Devs Announce Agents Of Mayhem

Saints Row creators Volition today announced they’ll release a new open-world explode-o-rama in 2017, though it’s not a new Saints Row. Not really. Agents of Mayhem [official site] will see the good-ish guys of M.A.Y.H.E.M. (the Multinational Agency for Hunting Evil Masterminds) scrapping with the dastardly L.E.G.I.O.N. (the League of Evil Gentlemen Intent on Obliterating Nations) in open-world shooty antics. Here, check out the announcement trailer:
