The 14 Best Metroidvania Games On PC

The Metroidvania is perhaps one of the more tricky genres to nail down. With its very name coming from an amalgamation of two actually quite different Nintendo-based game series – Metroid and Castlevania – quite what qualifies is always up for debate. Hence, we suspect this could be one of the more controversial lists, when it leaves out a favourite game that someone else might argue fits the remit, but we decided did not. The important thing to remember is that we’re right. And all of these games are brilliant.

Metroid 2 fan remake dev now working on Ori sequel

One year and a day ago, and after a decade of work, one Metroid fan released an unofficial PC remake of Nintendo’s Metroid II. AM2R [official site] was its name (Another Metroid 2 Remake), and being pretty great was its game. Alas, Nintendo’s lawyers shut AM2R down within days. This was unpleasant but unsurprising. The anniversary of the launch, however, has brought far better news.

AM2R lead Milton ‘DoctorM64’ Guasti announced yesterday that he has landed a job in level design for Ori and the Will of the Wisps [official site] – a new metroidvania. Read the rest of this entry »

Have You Played… AM2R?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

AKA ‘Another Metroid 2 Remake‘ [official site], rather a self-effacing title for what might just be the best Metroid game in years. Trouble being, Nintendo weren’t involved – quite the opposite, in fact, as the blighters shut down this fan project soon after release. Fortunately, it’s not hard to find, for now at least.

Fan-made Metroid II Remake Shut Down By Nintendo

A fan-made remake of Metroid 2 has been scrubbed off the internet just two days after it was released, when Nintendo sent the developers a takedown order. It was finished and offered as a free game on Saturday on the creator’s website, Project AM2R, but quicker than you could say “legal team” Nintendo had sent a DMCA order to those responsible. The creators have since removed all download links to the game. It’s all very sad and predictable. But the programmer behind the remake is being characteristically gracious.

Metroid 2, Remade For PC

Also on a free tip is this polished, determined demo of a fan remake of one of the old Metroid titles from the original Gameboy. I’m generally not that much of a classic Nintendo kinda guy – give me X-Com over Zelda any day – but have always had a massive soft spot for the elaborate and affectingly maudlin platforming’n’puzzling of the 8/16-bit Metroid game (though Metroid Fusion on the GBA is probably my favourite, oddly). Unfortunately the excessive backtracking and ultra-bosses of the Gamecube/Wii Metroids made me a sad panda, however. This cheerful throwback is looking lovely though, and is a far cry from the greenscreen of the GB version. Great to have this resolutely console game on PC, and I do hope it makes it to a full-blown release before the wrath of Ninty kills it.
