Hard Sci-Fi: Anno 2205 Patch Adds Veteran Difficulty

The Moon isn't all sunshine and roses, you know. Nights last two weeks, for starters, and you can't grow roses in cheese.

Back in my day, running a corporation spanning the Earth and Moon took real guts, real gumption, real sleeve garters. Nowadays they simply hand you the Moon on a stick, and a shiny gold star too. True story.

If you’ve wished Anno 2205 [official site] presented more of a challenge, you might fancy another look after today’s patch. Version 1.5 has added Veteran Mode, which… makes it more difficult. The update also brings new quest types, performance improvements, bug fixes, and other patchy sorts of things.

Anno 2205 Free DLC Starts January With Wildwater Bay

Have you been taking care of dear old Mumsy, our planet Earth, and her dusty baby? In Anno 2205 [official site], that is. I mean, have you been playing Anno 2205? If so, you may heard Ian Ubisoft muttering about plans for future updates, expansions, and free DLC. What’s that, Ian? Speak up. You’re repeating yourself. Be clearer. Oh, move over.

The first of several planned free ‘DLC’ bits is Wildwater Bay, a large new planetside session, and will come in January. The paid first expansion, Tundra, is due at the end of February, and will be followed by the Orbit expansion. I’ll explain more.

Anno 2205 Shows Modular Buildings And Moon Colonies

I haven’t played an Anno game since it was a series about building quaint trading colonies in the 18th century, and so I’m quietly impressed by these videos of Anno 2205 [official site]. Not because it’s set in the future in which you build moon colonies and ferry goods with spaceships, but because its landscapes look so big and pretty. Step below and learn about some modular buildings, sure, but also just look at the vast metropolises.

Never Pre-Order: Anno 2205 Pre-order Bonus Beta Canned

“Never pre-order” is something we say a lot around here, along with “Who am I?” and “How did I get here?” and “Are these your guts or mine?” But really, never pre-order. (Well, what I mean is “the risk of a game not living up to its marketing is rarely worth the trinkets and discounts offered as pre-order perks” but that’s less catchy.) Even those tempting offers of getting to play a game early might be pulled; that’s what Ubisoft have done with Anno 2205 [official site].

Ubisoft have scrapped plans for a closed beta for pre-orders, and are instead offering an exclusive command ship (in the game) and emblem. Never pre-order.

Impressions: Anno 2205 Takes City-building To The Moon

“We choose to go to the Moon” says Dirk Riegert, the creative director of Ubisoft Blue Byte. Except he doesn’t – he actually says something like “we will go to the Moon”, which is nowhere near as good a quote, and the reason he’ll probably never be elected as President of the United States.

Fabricated quotes aside, I’m in a German town called Mainz – home of the printing press and the Gutenberg bible – to see something a little more futuristic. It’s Anno 2205 – the newest entry in the strategic city-building series where the numbers always add up to nine, and Riegert’s explaining how this entry differs from the previous ones. “We are leaving Earth for the first time,” he says. “2205? It’s time for the space elevator to go up through the stratosphere.”
