Batman: Arkham Origins DLC Adds Sort-of Origins

His knee must smell pretty bad.

Batman: Arkham Origins wasn’t about the origins of Batman, nor was it particularly good. It did have Batman though, and that counts for a lot.

The Inititaion DLC adds challenge maps which tell the sort-of Origins of Batman, and thus don’t really star Batman, but a bearded Bruce Wayne. There’s a trailer and an explanation below.

Wot I Think: Batman – Arkham Origins

Despite its name, Arkham Origins isn’t so much Batman Begins as Batman Continues. A cynic might presume that the handing of the license to a new studio and rapid turn-around of the sequel suggests that Batman is mainly continuing because Pennyworth needs a new pair of shoes. But has the vigilante become a mercenary or is this another solid entry in the series? Here’s wot I think.

Batman: Arkham Oranges Has Terrible Facial Animation

Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse

That’s because the developers of Batman: Arkham Origins are clearly using a joypad in this 17 minute walkthrough. Ahahahahahaa! Now the fun part of the story is out of the way, it’s time for me to get serious. I was hoping that this video of Arkham Origins would do me until the game is released this Friday, but there’s just one problem. I watched it and now all I can see about the bit 3m35s in, where Batman and Albert have a conversation in the Batcave. It was sneaky, punchy Batfun until that moment, but then Bats and Alfred started talking and it all just crumbled. It looks like someone attempted to reanimate a corpse and only succeeded in bringing the lips to life. It’s appalling.

Jeff Strokes: Batman: Arkham Oranges Trailer

I think we can all agree that the only DLC the upcoming Batman: Arkham Oranges needs is an “Adam West Mode”, where every punch is received with an awesome orchestral blare, where the goons go down with “POW!” and “KERBLOINK!” floating over their heads, and where Batman’s disturbingly manly pecs are replaced with the flat, grey tube that was Batman’s chest before he discovered nippled Kevlar. To me that’s proper DLC: the sort of silly, experimental nonsense that developers should be attempting with those gaming buboes. Meanwhile, in the stupid real world where gritty and humourless is easier to sell than whimsy and delight, the first DLC will be the “Deathstroke Challenge Pack”, and will focus on the hitting things. Trailer below.

The Bat And The Beautiful: Arkham Origins’ PC Pretties

Aha! Now to tickle him to death from behind!

I wonder if, back in the day, when Batman’s creators were first putting ink to paper and bat to man, they thought to themselves, “OK, this is cool, but we won’t be truly satisfied until we can add Nvidia PhysX, realistic fog effects, and DirectX 11 tessellation.” I bet that’s exactly where their minds drifted as they imagined a future of chrome jumpsuits, cities in the sky, and people with slug-like appendages instead of legs. And now, finally, their dreams have come true. Batman: Arkham Origins‘ PC utility belt is loaded with more bells and whistles than a Shiny Things And Loud Noises factory, and Gotham’s looking quite spiffy as a result. By which I of course mean dingy, frigid, and crime-ridden. Also foggy. We cannot forget the fog. We can never forget the fog.

This Batman: Arkham Origins Gallery Is Ridiculous

For a grim world that’s been overwhelmed by criminals, corruption, and bat guano, the Arkham series of games has always had very polished and pretty polygons. And even though pre-release screenshots are known for being unfathomably and unrealistically pretty, both games in the series really do look gorgeous when the camera whizzes around to show a particularly brutal punch. So I’m very happy to show off this Batman: Arkham Oranges gallery. I’d imagine it’s impossible for the released game to look this attractive, but I think it’ll be close.

Fruits Of Their Labour: Arkham Oranges Intros Firefly

A trailer a day keeps the dread lord of games at bay, that’s what we say here at RPS. If we don’t, he’ll rise again to wage terrible war upon our castle, PR-catapults firing besuited fast-talkers at our poor, potholed walls. Our defenses are meek and few what with the great Sir Botherer’s new steed not yet full grown and aged knights Sir Rossignol and Sir Smith having defected to Germany. Thank the heavens, then, that Batman‘s swooping down with our neatly packaged, 1080p deliverance. Read the rest of this entry »
