The RPG Scrollbars: Notes On Writing A Universe

Hello, God talking. At least, within a certain small sphere. Like a few of Team RPS, I’ve been writing for games as well as writing about them recently, most prominently as the writer of Daedalic Studio West’s The Long Journey Home [official site] – a space exploration RPG with roguelike elements (but not the crap ones). You know. A SERPGWRENCO. We’re now at the stage where my job is basically done, the universe is designed, the dialogue is all written, and I’m asking tramps on the street if I can borrow their whisky just so I can breathe heavily into the bag. There’s not much more fun than working on a game inspired by some of your favourites, notably Star Control 2. At the same time, well… oh dear, here comes that pesky hyperventilation again…

But I’m not here to market, but to talk tools. I know I’m always interested in seeing behind the scenes, so this week, I thought I’d pull back the curtain a little to talk not so much about what I’ve been working on, but what I’ve been working in.

Flirting With Disaster: Section 8 Prejudice

Untroubled by flirting, the men continue shooting the men.

I’m trying to work out exactly what I think about the video below showing the studios at Timegate, as they work on Section 8: Prejudice. It’s certainly uncomfortable. But then it’s trying to be. It’s not exactly endearing toward women, but then it’s not to men either, and they’re obviously taking the piss. It’s certainly a unique approach to the usually excruciatingly boring behind-the-scenes videos we see of development studios. But I’m not convinced it’s the right one. It’s an insecure woman pretending to care about the game so she can flirt with the developers. Er. Oh, whatever they were trying to do, it doesn’t work.

Bionic Commando: Embracing The 80s Tacky

Retro Moderno

I’m rather looking forward to Bionic Commando. Both of them. There’s the super-fly new-fangled 3D Bionic Commando, still awaiting a release date. And there’s Bionic Commando Rearmed – a remake/sequel for the classic NES game – due this summer.

Both developed by Swedish developers, GRIN, optimism is based purely on the bits and pieces I’ve seen of both games so far, rather than their rather weak ports of GRAW and GRAW 2 to PC. But there’s more reason to feel positive in the video below, where the Rearmed team explain how dedicated they are to the original look and feel, and the beginnings of some of the new ideas they’ve brought to the 2D series.
