The History Of Overwatch’s Hero Abilities

Developers imitate each other, as do writers, musicians and artists, and Blizzard are the best in the business at it. No other company is so good at distilling the sweat of another’s brow and refining it into pure, unadulterated joy. Yet, while it’s easy to see in Overwatch the objective-based gameplay of Team Fortress 2, the team dynamics of League of Legends or the creative movement mechanics of 90s shooters, its various ideas can often be traced back much further, towards older games that the designers at Blizzard may never have played.

I’ve chosen ten abilities Overwatch’s heroes can perform and used them as the starting point for a jaunt through game history. What was the first game to feature grappling hooks, or teleportation, or time-rewinding? Find out below.

CapComfirmed For PC: Resident Evil 5

Capcom have stated that Resident Evil 5, Bionic Commando, and Streetfighter IV will come out on PC across the summer (although only SFIV is firmly dated, for July 2nd, as far as I can see). Bionic Commando will also land in July, with Resident Evil 5 coming “later in the year”. There will be PC-exclusive features for each of the games, as we’d already seen with Streetfighter IV. I asked a Capcom spokesperson about Lost Planet 2 on PC earlier today, and received the reply: “No word on Lost Planet on PC. Yet.”

Full press release below, and thanks to Sub Edii for the tip.

Bionic Commando Grapples With The Iss… (Dies)

They appear determined to not release any screenshots showing the arm in action.

I don’t know why I’m so convinced I’m going to enjoy the modernised Bionic Commando (as well as the modernised 2D platformer, Bionic Commando Rearmed), but I am. Maybe it’s because I too have a bionic arm, and am so under-represented in the media. The trailer below only enhances that enthusiasm. Look how cool the grapply arm thing is! I really am convinced that all games become at least 20% better purely for the addition of a grappling hook. 30% better for double-jumps, and 20% for grappling. Those are the maths, developers. Take note.

Bionic Commando: Embracing The 80s Tacky

Retro Moderno

I’m rather looking forward to Bionic Commando. Both of them. There’s the super-fly new-fangled 3D Bionic Commando, still awaiting a release date. And there’s Bionic Commando Rearmed – a remake/sequel for the classic NES game – due this summer.

Both developed by Swedish developers, GRIN, optimism is based purely on the bits and pieces I’ve seen of both games so far, rather than their rather weak ports of GRAW and GRAW 2 to PC. But there’s more reason to feel positive in the video below, where the Rearmed team explain how dedicated they are to the original look and feel, and the beginnings of some of the new ideas they’ve brought to the 2D series.

Bionic Commando: Grapple With This

Call me Captain Crazy from Loony Land, but I’m really looking forward to the Bionic Commando remake. A new trailer shows him at action in the park, rather than the more city-based footage we’ve seen before. And why my portent? Grappling hooks.

We’d give a bionic arm and a leg to you, Gametrailers.
