Wot I Think: Birthdays the Beginning

Birthdays the Beginning

Birthdays The Beginning [official site] is a sandbox evolution game from Harvest Moon creator Yasuhiro Wada. The aesthetic is somewhere between Harvest Moon, Viva Pinata and a sugarcraft workshop. On paper it looks like the exact sort of thing I’d love – a biology-themed sim with collectible and ADORABLE lifeforms including ferns, velociraptors and turtles. In practice it can’t seem combine the ingredients into a satisfying enough dish. Here’s Wot I Think: Read the rest of this entry »

The PC games of 2017 mega-preview

As Old Father Time grabs his sickle and prepares to take ailing 2016 around the back of the barn for a big sleep, we’re looking to the future. The mewling pup that goes by the name 2017 will come into the world soon and we must prepare ourselves for its arrival. Birthdays

Birthdays The Beginning [official site] is a new project, releasing 7 March (that’s the NA release, EU will be 10 March), by Harvest Moon creator Yasuhiro Wada. It has been nagging at the edges of my gaming radar for a little while now, simply by dint of game images showing off adorable-looking dinosaurs and pictures of the game as a real-life miniature scene but it was only in the last few days that I learned what the game actually is. It’s an environment nurturing sim where you try to spawn and evolve different lifeforms in order to capture them.

Somewhere between Pokemon and Viva Pinata is how I’m thinking of it right now, partly for the gameplay elements, but also for the emotion and the aesthetic of the latter particularly. But to find out more I sat down with Wada-san (and an incredibly helpful translator) as well as tuning in to a Twitch broadcast showing off the main game loops. Read the rest of this entry »

Harvest Moon Creator’s Sandbox Birthdays Hitting PC

The next game from Harvest Moon creator Yasuhiro Wada, named Birthdays the Beginning [official site], is coming our way next year. Birthdays is a cute little sandbox about carving a teensy Minecraft-y world out of a cube in space to develop and support an ecosystem of everything from plants to dinosaurs. A console released was announced a while back, and now we know it’ll be on PC too. Have a peek at its cubeworlds in this Japanese trailer:
