Have You Played? is an endless stream of game retrospectives. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

Audio-only games like Papa Sangre have been spooking up pocket telephones a treat, but the idea of navigating by sound alone will always make me think of having a good old chuckle. The Blind Monk’s Society [official site] is a free, silly Half-Life 2 mod from 2008, a black screen and some helpful audio direction. Should ravenous ravens ever devour my eyes, I’ll listen carefully for a friendly Blind Monk.

See No Evil: Three Monkeys Is A Game Of Blindness

The last game I played that was just based on the player’s hearing was The Blind Monk’s Society, which I hilariously chose to play because it has no graphics and RPS was protesting SOPA at the time. It was a torturous joke on the blackout, see? The concept was good enough for me to hope that something of its ilk comes along properly, to take sound and build a world with it. I’m happy to report that it Three Monkeys does just that, picking up the notion and running with it. Trailery bits and dev chat beneath.

Unseen University: The Blind Monk’s Society

What did you do during the great battle of SOPA? What will you be able to tell your grandkids about the stand you took? The stand you took for our freedom to say “bottom” to a librarian? Me? I joined in the great blackout by playing a game without any graphics. In defiance of SOPA, I played the old but thoroughly delightful Half-Life 2 mod The Blind Monk’s Society.
