Brutal Doom’s latest beta remixes the classics

Brutal Doom

Brutal Doom in a nutshell: Doom 2‘s familiar (iconic?) Icon Of Sin battle re-purposed into the very image of heavy metal excess; No longer just a wall texture, the monster bobs and sways, protruding out from a wall of giant intestines surrounded by torrents of blood pouring into the arena, all whilst the player gracefully extends a middle finger on each hand.

It’s been nearly two years since this juggernaut of Doom modding saw a major release, with its creator taking some time off to remake Doom 64 in the interim. Missing Halloween by just one day, this week saw the release of version 21 (albeit in beta form) and it feels like a milestone in its transformation into something almost entirely new, and distinct from both Doom of 1993, and Doom of 2016.

There’s more to Brutal Doom than gore

There are few constants in videogames quite like the original Doom (or Doom 2, if we’re being picky) – a grand leap forward in FPS design that has somehow remained timeless and enduring even in the face of countless successors. Quake, Call of Duty, sequels and even full reboots have come and gone, but the original 90s Doom still stands strong, scaleable, adaptable and eternally self-reinventing.

Between countless engine upgrades thanks to Id generously releasing the source code and a seemingly endless stream of mod and level releases thanks in part to continually updated tools, the original Doom (and its engine-sharing derivatives) still boast one of the most active mod scenes out there, and one mod in particular has risen to such ubiquity that it has spawned a whole parallel mod scene of its own; the splatteriffic Brutal Doom. Itsa Me, Ripandteario: Brutal Doom 64 Released

Borrow a seven-year-old child, fill them with sweeties and juice, make them spin in circles for five minutes, give ’em a nip of whisky, and have them play Doom for fifteen minutes then describe it to you. Whatever giddy image of Doom their imaginations vomit up, Brutal Doom actually is: a frenzy of ultraviolence with gibs by the bucketload. Now it’s slopped all over Doom 64, the game release on Nintendo 64 in 1997. Unlike the Quake port for N64, I’m only now realising, Doom 64 was a new game with new levels, art, and weapons. From DOOM ‘Til DUSK: A New ‘Classic’ FPS Murderthon

Hello, murder fans. We’ve already played DOOM and QUAKE and OTHERS, but the demand for caps-locked first-person shooters with gibs and chaos somehow seems to grow. So here is DUSK [official site], an FPS from publisher New Blood, which is paying tribute to the classics of the genre the only way it knows how: by killing everything in sight with shotguns, scythes and explosives. Brutal Doom Dual-Wielding New Doom’s Guns

Doom on you.

The new Doom certainly seems to have a touch of Brutal Doom [official site] in it, what with all the ripping and tearing and whatnot, so it’s only fair that in return Brutal Doom should get a bit of D44m [thousands of letters from Doom enthusiasts have flooded into the RPS treehouse demanding we call the new game that -ed.]. Out now and recently updated is a Brutal Doom add-on boshing D44m’s weapons into the ultraviolent mod for ye olde Doom. Yes, of course you can dual-wield super shotguns. And heck yes you can transform into demons. Have a look at this in action:

How Brutal Doom’s Gore Works

“Saved my hide, it did. The alien’s broad back shielded me as its brethren flung their fiery mucus wads; the fireballs burst, spraying flaming, red liquid that dribbled down my dance partner’s legs to pool on the ground, lighting the room with a hellish, red glaze. I fired nine or ten times, finally blowing a hole clean through the alien … a gory loophole through which I turned on the rest.”

Knee Deep in the Dead, Dafydd Ab Hugh and Brad Linaweaver’s novelisation of Doom, is perhaps a little more theatrical than the Doom that played in my head during the summer of 1994. It features a sidekick and talking demons, and dramatised sequences in which protagonist Corporal Flynn Taggart finds ammo and bumps up against walls to find secrets. But it captures something of Doom’s intensely graphic nature. Doom was the first game I played that felt truly fluid and direct.

Playing Brutal Doom [official site] today feels like Doom always did, despite its custom levels and gouts of blood and gore, death animations and chugging live versions of Doom’s MUS originals. It overhauls pretty much every element of the original, and yet it’s the Doom that plays in my memory, amplifying the original’s gore and immediacy to suit a post-COD, Gears of War – heck, Soldier of Fortune – world. For me, the latest version, v20b, reaches a state of the sublime. But while the blood that drips from ceilings and screen-filling viscera are its obvious achievements, something far more prosaic lies at the root of how it works so well.

Brutal Doom’s Story Campaign Released

Brutal Doom [official site] isn’t your grandfather’s Doom II, is the sort of thing I’d say if I wrote for a games magazine in the ’90s. Its reworked weapons, enemies, and combat do change Doom an awful lot, making it an ultraviolent new game with a friendly old look. Now Brutal Doom has its very own story campaign, blasting through a Mars base, down to Earth and across Los Angeles, then into Hell. Skipping through a few maps, I larked about in toxic waste, lead an AI squad through demon-infested city streets, fought the biggest dang Cyberdemon I’ve ever seen, and generally had a gay old time.

Rip And Tear: Brutal Doom V20 Released

Ripped and torn.

Brutal Doom [official site] may be the best evidence yet that our entire world is inside the mind of a child in 1995 in bed hallucinating gore, fatalities, mutilation, gore, guns, gore, and swear words, their Global Hypercolor t-shirt turning a lurid shade of turquoise around the neck and armpits to indicate a terrible fever.

Creator Sergeant Mark IV this weekend released version 20 of the Doom mod after 18 months of work. V20 brings new gore, new dual-wielding weapons, new gore, better stealth mechanics (no, really), new gore, fancier graphics, bullet penetration, more gore, and more. And more gore.

Brutal Doom V20 Ripping And Tearing Into June

Well then.

I’ve been trying to change my use of ‘awesome’ from the ’90s exclamation of bodaciousness to the more reverent and terrified connotations it once had. But no, the mod Brutal Doom [Mod DB page] is totally awesome, not to mention tubular, radical, excellent, gnarly, wikkid, sikk, righteous, and wikkid sikk. It’s the gory fever dreams of a child of ’90s excess after a hard day’s fragging.

The long-delayed version 20.0 finally has a release date – June 5th – and a new trailer shows off so many ridiculous things that I had to laugh. A Baron of Hell picks up and tosses an explosive barrel, monsters lose limbs and keep on coming, you dual-wield big guns, and Doom Guy punches and kicks and rips and tears, and everyone explodes into bloody little bits. Awesome!
