Lords of Shadow doesn’t play like a regular 2d Castlevania game. While there are unlockable abilities that allow you to return to levels and discover new pathways and treasures, it’s a much more linear action adventure. Every played God of War? This is Goth of War. With Shadow of the Colossus type mega-battles against giant enemies.

Wot I think: Castlevania: Lords of Shadow Ultimate Edition

If there’s one thing you expect from a Castlevania game, it’s Patrick Stewart. Sorry I mean vampires! Definitely vampires. Lords of Shadow has coffins full of the buggers, though it’s shy about the fact and sticks them behind one of the most turgid and over-extended openings I’ve ever had the misfortune to play through. Things do get sexy, but to find out about Gabriel Belmont’s combat cross you gotta jump, jump.

What Is Castlevania Ultimate? A Miserable Pile Of Content

Because regular spiders weren't already terrifying enough.

OK, it’s actually quite a nice pile of content, but I really wanted to make the Symphony of the Night opening reference. Now then, that out of the way, we have a rather surprisingly unrelated game to talk about. Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Ultimate Edition is actually a compilation of the recent Hideo-Kojima-tinged, MercurySteam-developed series pseudo-reboot, spanning Lords of Shadow and two add-on chapters. You’ll remember, of course, that Cara whiffed icy vampire blood percolating in Steam’s vapors back in March, but now it’s official. Scatter into a flock of bats and scream past the break for a trailer.
