The Making Of Company Of Heroes

In 2001, Band of Brothers was still airing on HBO and Canadian developer Relic Entertainment was finishing up development of Impossible Creatures, its freaky animal RTS. Space and sci-fi had been its muse for years, but it found, in the increased cultural interest in World War 2, another setting and the impetus for Company of Heroes.

Relic celebrated the game’s tenth anniversary this month. It remains one of the most acclaimed RTS games of all time, lavished in 2006 with glowing reviews and heaps of awards. I’ll mostly remember it as the reason I got chewed out by a lecturer for dozing in class, after a long night of liberating Europe.

We’ve talked four of the original developers into taking a trip down a potholed, tank-lined memory lane with us.

Still Alive: Company of Heroes

Men of war

Oh, old man Company of Heroes, so good to see you again. Pull a comfy chair up to the fire and tell us another war story. It must hurt, having seen your younger, free to pay brother pass away so unexpectedly last year, but at least we’ve still got you. And what’s that? You’re not ready to go gently into that good night yourself yet? You have a healthy new patch laden with six extra maps and a bewildering array of balance changes? Excellent.

CoHO Adds New Maps, Still Closing

Maps, like topological portraiture
News reaches my nightmare fortress tower of an update to Company Of Heroes Online. There are two new maps to play, the 4-player Road to Montherme and an 8-player map called Hill 331. Of course this new terrain won’t be around for long, because the service is shutting down on March 31st. Play ’em while you got ’em, I suppose.

Company Of Heroes Online Closing?

A news post on the Company Of Heroes Online website contains this message from Relic: “After an exciting period of operating and testing, we will be closing Open Beta on March 31, 2011 to evaluate the next steps for the Company of Heroes series.” Sounds pretty final. Any cash spent in the game can be used up to that point, and anyone who registered with the game before February 1st can get Company Of Heroes: Gold Edition for $4.99. The message signs off: “We are excited to reveal the next evolution of the series in the near future.”

I shall try to find out a bit more information, but this is starting to look like one free-to-play experiment that didn’t quite work out.

Land Of The Free: Company Of Heroes Online

Land Of The Free is an ongoing series looking at free to play games. This week we dip into the ongoing Company of Heroes Online beta.

Coming back to Company of Heroes, after all this time, feels somewhat akin to returning to your parents house. It’s the same place, and you spent a lot of time here, but somehow, something is different. And that something is you.

Company Of Heroes Open Beta Online

That’s the Company Of Heroes Online open beta online, you understand. As promised a while back, Relic’s free-to-play take on their popular strategy is now open to all. It has been announced in full here by Relic’s Greg Wilson, Producer of COHO. The RPS hivemind will be plugging itself into this next week, so we might have some thoughts to broadcast on it soon. But if you fancy some tactical cleverness then you can sign up on the front page link here, this very instant.

Company Of Heroes Online: Allies Trailer

We’re getting more excited about Company Of Heroes Online by the day. The game is closed beta at the moment, and we’re expecting to have some of our own impressions of the game up here before it hits later in September. For a taste of why we’re excited head below. This recent trailer details a bunch of the units available to Allied forces and it’s really splendidly produced. Go take a look.

(There really is some stuff to be said about the quality of free-to-play stuff coming out this year, but that’s for another article.)
