Slowing The Conversation: Concrete Jungle

Part of the fun of playing games for me is the conversations that happen around them, but that means that it can feel like you’ve missed out when you come to a game late. So let’s generate our own discussion by revisiting some of last year’s missed games together. For starters, I chose Concrete Jungle, a blend of city- and deck-building.

Deck The City Halls: Concrete Jungle Out Now

We talk a lot about spiritual successors to beloved games. “Cities Skylines,” you might say to a friend, “is a spiritual successor to SimCity.” If that’s the case, you might also say that city management deck-builder Concrete Jungle [official site] is a spiritual predecessor. Concrete Jungle Breaks Ground On September 23rd

Concrete Jungle [official site] is a “city planning deck-building game”. I played an in-development version of it earlier this year and thought it was smart, for the way it makes overt the decision-making behind urban expansion and finds a space somewhere between a mathematical puzzle game and Cities: Skylines.

Hot Town: Concrete Jungle Is A Deckbuilding Citybuilder

Smaller cities than SimCity though lol

How much of my love of citybuilding games is simply that I love looking at cities? Clean lines, bustling streets, each block a little ant farms to peer into and lose myself within. Concrete Jungle suggests you can twist the genre in whole new directions and I’ll still follow along. It replaces all the management and simulation normally associated with citybuilding and replaces it instead with deckbuilding. Ooh. It’s on Kickstarter now and more than a third of the way towards a modest target.
