Destiny 2: No-fuss engrams, guided game beta and ridic live action trailer

Destiny 2

Is “reminds me a bit of Power Rangers” an emotion? Because I’m watching the live-action Destiny 2 [official site] trailer and that’s the main sensation it’s generating. Further emotions include “You could have actually done a full homage to the official video for Sabotage starring Destiny characters and I think that would have worked but you didn’t and why would you not?” and “shut up Cayde-6, you’re overexposed right now”. Podcast: The Electronic Wireless Show talks Destiny 2, Absolver and XCOM 2: War of the Chosen

If on a winter's night a Traveller

Hark, it’s the sweet vocal vibrations of the humble RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show. The lads (lads lads) are back from the bright lights of Gamescom and ready to chat hard about the games they saw. But Pip is only giving us a maximum of three words about each one. Madness. Never mind, we can talk more verbosely about the alien-shooting of the Destiny 2 beta, or the otherworldly kickboxing of Absolver, or the other-alien-shooting of XCOM 2: War of the Chosen. It’s been quite a good week.

Destiny 2: Judging the game from the beta is an impossible prospect

Destiny

Once upon a time (like, 9.30am BST) Adam popped up on work Slack chat and asked if I could spend two days playing the Destiny 2’s [official site] PC beta. 2 Days 2 Destiny, if you will.

I would.

Here is my report after a few hours! I’ll update it with more thinking if and when it occurs to me or if I want to show off a particular quadrakill and pretend it’s news or something. There are mild spoilers ahead but a) I don’t think it’s anything you won’t have seen on various livestreams or at events if you’ve been paying attention to those and b) Bungie have set the whole story bit of the beta up so it cuts off before you get any answers – only questions. Destiny 2 on PC runs smooth as perma-gloomy butter

dest1

I’ll defer to m’esteemed colleague Pip in terms of opinions about Destiny 2 [official site]’s PC beta (coming this evening – ed), currently open to pre-orderers and then for the whole wide world from 6pm UK time/10am PST today, for she has spent significantly more time than I in the Crucible. What I can do is give you a good sense of Bungie’s long-awaited return to PC-based shootybangs runs on a variety of system, how good (or otherwise) it looks, and the more nebulous but more important business of how it feels on our WASDy weapons of choice.

Bungielicious: Destiny 2 PC open beta starts today

The free open beta test for Destiny 2 [official site], the MMO-lite shooter sequel from Halo creators Bungie, begins tonight on PC. It’ll kick off at 6pm (10am Pacific), available exclusively through Blizzard’s Battle.net Blizzard Beam Actiblizzablasta Battle.net client. The first Destiny skipped PC so this is a handy chance to check out what it’s all about. Our Pip, who played Destiny aplenty on console, is playing the beta and will have more to show and tell us about this beta soon. Also Alec is doing something involving screwdrivers and graphs or whatever a ‘tech’ is. Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2 shows off 4K shootbangs ahead of PC beta

destbeta

A new trailer for Destiny 2’s [official site] PC beta has arrived and like so much of the marketing, it’s nodding at all your PC’s most powerful components in a suggestive fashion: “With that kind of equipment, I can go full 4K with an uncapped framerate.” Even though the game itself is coming to PC later than console, as is the beta which arrives August 29th, it plans to use the extra time to really preen itself. Pre-order and you can join the beta a day early, but it’ll open up worldwide on the 29th, through the recently rebranded Blizzard.Battle/NothingButNet.

Speaking of BattleNet, Bungie recently reiterated that there are no plans to release Destiny 2 anywhere else on PC. “We’re with Blizzard”, says Bungie community manager DeeJ.

Destiny 2 details changes coming with PC open beta

It’s a shame that the PC release of Destiny 2 [official site] is coming later than its console counterparts, but at least our version does sound the best. And sure, our open beta test is late too — it comes at the end of August, one month after the console beta — but that’ll be better to. Bungie have detailed all the changes they’ve made since the console beta, including reworked matchmaking, balance tweaks, and exploit fixes. Slow and steady, chums. Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2 PC open beta starts August 29

Bungie have confirmed that Destiny 2 [official site], the online hangout and dancing social space with an attached MMO-FPS, will launch its PC open beta on Tuesday, August 29. That’ll run until Thursday, August 31. If you’ve wondered what consoleers have been on about these past few years — and what Adam enjoyed so much when he played at E3 — you’ll be able to find out for free. Bungie have also confirmed tentative PC system requirements so you can figure out if you’ll be able to run Destiny’s Child. Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2’s open beta: what to expect

Destiny 2

In “That Wizard Came From The Moon: The Sequel” news, there’s a Destiny 2 [official site] trailer detailing what players can expect from sci-fi FPS’s upcoming open beta. It looks like it’s a chance for a load more people to get their hands on the stuff journos got to play at E3, so the opening of the story campaign, the co-op Inverted Spire strike and a splash of PvP.

Podcast: The Electronic Wireless Show talks Frostpunk, Destiny 2 and Middle Earth: Shadow of War

It’s warm! Luckily the RPS podcast, the Electronic Wireless Show, have come together to talk cold games, like chilly survivalist city-builder Frostpunk. That’s because Adam is back from E3 and can tell us (Brendan and Pip) all about it. He’s also played Destiny 2 and Middle Earth: Shadow of War, the lucky sod. Spill the beans, Adam! No wait, don’t. We need those.

This week’s back-to-normal-length episode also sees us talking about Darkest Dungeon‘s latest expansion, The Crimson Court, esoteric desert survival RPG Kenshi, and some news about GTA V and the sad fate of its modders. Also: the return of our patch notes quiz, Patch Adam, this time featuring Dwarf Fortress. Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2 combat is a punchy, kinetic joy

Destiny 2 [official site] comes with a lot of baggage. It’s the PC debut of an enormously successful new series from a mega-developer, and the original is precisely the kind of multiplayer co-op shooter that even some die-hard fans are a little burned out on after nearly three years of DLC and grinding for gear.

Enter Adam. I came to Destiny 2, at E3 last week, with barely enough baggage to fill a pencil case, having only played the demo of the original, and am immediately greedy for more. Whatever more it might offer. Destiny 2 is colour and light and the majestic spectacle of a Saturday morning cartoon and a space opera fused into a punchily satisfying shooter.

Destiny 2’s PlayStation-exclusive bits hitting PC in 2018

If you’ve been closely following the Destiny 2 [official site] newsfest blastnews announceblam out of E3, you’ll likely know that Bungie’s online looter-shooter: 1) has a PC release date seven weeks after the console launch; 2) has pretty things; and 3) has a cooperative mission, a multiplayer map, and some weapons and gear cordoned off as PlayStation exclusives. I bring okay-ish news on point 3. Those exclusive PlayBits will come to PC eventually, Bungie have confirmed, but not until 2018. Here, watch this trailer for all the stuff we’ll receive late: Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2: Swish 4k 60FPS nonsense and screenshots

Destiny 2

YOU, a reader, may be interested to see this PC Destiny 2 [official site] footage running in 4K at 60fps. It’s a marketing push by NVIDIA because graphics cards and numbers and tech etc etc BUT it did mean I could pass watching a minute and a half of Destiny looking pretty off as work. Every PC game announced or trailered at E3 2017

Each year E3 rolls around like a giant evil worm, crushing all that’s good and pure. BUT that worm also announces lots of exciting gaming news as it wreaks its carnage upon the Earth. Here we have gathered every announcement, reveal, and exciting new trailer that emerged from the barrage of screamed press conferences over the last few days. And lots of it looks rather spiffy.

A rather enormous 47 PC games were either announced, revealed, or updated upon, with new trailers, information, and released dates that will all be missed by at least three months. We’ve collected the lot, with trailers, in alphabetical order, into one neat place, just for you. Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2 on PC October 24, seven weeks after consoles

After umming and ahhing, Bungie have confirmed a PC release date of October 24th for Destiny 2 [official site] – seven weeks after its console release. They had said before that they might delay their online looter-shooter on PC, explaining that “we want to make sure that this version of the game has the time it needs to bake in the oven so it’s a delicious piece of bread when it comes out,” and I guess that’s what has happened. Seeing as the first Destiny skipped PC, it is a shame that the second is being held up. Ah, phooey. Here’s a new trailer from E3 to introduce Destiny 2’s villain: Read the rest of this entry »

No surprise: No Destiny 2 dedicated servers for PC

Destiny 2 [official site] will not have dedicated servers on PC, Bungie have confirmed. Some Destineers had hope that it might switch from the first game’s peer-to-peer networking model as the sci-fi FPS series makes its PC debut, given that dedicated servers tend to be less laggy and make cheating — which is far more common on PC — tougher. I can’t say I’m surprised to learn the answer is a nope but it’s still a shame. Bungie have explained that Destiny 2 will use “a hybrid of client-server and peer-to-peer technology, just like Destiny 1”, so let’s get technical! Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2: Don’t Fear The Grimoire Reaper

Rasputin is a warmind.

“Destiny (2) is calllinnnnnnng meeeeeeeee” sang Brandon Boyer of early 2000s hit group The Thrills. “Open up my eeeeeeeeeager eyesssssssssss, cause I’m ready to read more grimoire cardssssssss.”

Well, I have some bad news for you, Brandon. Destiny 2 [official site] is doing away with grimoire cards in favour of sticking the lore in the game and not, e.g. in a completely separate app on my telephone. Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2: what new players need to know

It pains me to put a hunter on the front page

I’m now fully caught up on the Destiny 2 [official site] presentation and am wading through the first hands-on footage people are feeding out as videos. The game has a hard release date of 8 September on console (and a smidge of pre-order beta before that) but PC is still a bit of an unknown. It’ll still happen but the exact details are still lurking in the realms of “dunno”. BUT! That gives us some breathing room to get you, the wide-eyed PC player, up to speed. There’s also plenty in the info we now have that excites me and a few niggles I wanted to poke at while they’re still fresh in my mind. Shall we start with an overview of the game and then move on to things like the reworked match-making for raids and so on? It’s my article so I’ll assume you said yes! Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2’s PC release might come later than console

Though Destiny 2 [official site] is indeed coming to PC, after the first game skipped us, our version might come a little later than the September 8th release date Bungie have been shouting out. That’s only the console date, Bungie have said, and the PC date is yet unconfirmed. Which I suppose means that it could be the same, or it could not. Either way, Bungie say they want their online sci-fi FPS to be good on PC so they’ll release it when it is. Read the rest of this entry »

Destiny 2’s new trailer, plus everything we know so far

Bungie’s live show of dancing lights and bullets has ended, so let’s look at what we’ve learned about Destiny 2 [official site]. Story-wise, the Guardians have been ousted from their comfortable penthouse suite by a surprise attack and are scattered across the solar system, having lost all their powers. On top of that, the giant Christmas tree decoration they call the Traveler has been stolen. It’s your job to “get the band back together”. You’ve got some new character powers, multiplayer modes and the ability to join clans. You’ll also be touching down on new planets, where you can shoot hundreds of bullets into bad things. But there’s a new trailer below, for a taste of all that.

In more irksome news, it’s going to be exclusive to Blizzard’s game launcher, the Digital Distribution Platform Formerly Known As Battle.net. That means no Steam release or other storefront. Thanks, Activision. Thactivision.
