Oculus Rift price drops to $349 / $349 for Black Friday

Oculus Rift

If you saw our heads-up about the HTC Vive Black Friday deal earlier this week (to recap, you get a Vive, Fallout 4 VR, Doom VFR and a free deluxe audio strap and more for £599 starting from tomorrow), then you’ll be pleased to know that the Oculus Rift is also being discounted for Black Friday – starting TODAY, in fact. It’s almost as if they knew…

Digital deals so far this week

We’ve hit the mid-point of the week and the see-saw of time is about to tip forward and hurtle us towards the weekend at an alarming rate. Perhaps more ominously, we will also be hurtling towards the litany of PC gaming Black Friday deals that are headed our way in a fortnight’s time.

Before then, however, the deals aren’t slowing down one bit and there’s another big batch of digital deals to check out right here, right now. Everything from this week’s release of Nioh to Cities Skylines and even the absolute gem that is Jagged Alliance 2 is represented across a variety of sites, so consider this a convenient mid-week digital deals roundup if you like. Let’s get to it, shall we?

Dirt 4 first footage – the arcade/sim sweet spot returns?

I’ve usually had a lot of time for Codies’ racing games, despite only being a car person to the extent that I can replace the fuse for the cigarette lighter if push comes to shove. They tend to comfortably straddle the line between the cheerful anti-physics of arcade driving games and the stony-faced realism of the sim crowd, which is the sweet spot where I can convince myself that ‘yes, I am incredible race driver man!’

Dirt 4 [official site] sounds as though it’s a game consciously in search of that sweet spot, with Codies having previously talked of fusing Dirt Rally’s “realism” with the rather poppier Dirt 2 and 3’s “fun”. In trailer terms, that means spraying mud, near-misses and possibly inappropriate use of the word “banging” for its soundtrack.

Dirt 4 rolling out trucks, buggies, and procedural tracks

Codemasters today announced Dirt 4 [official site], a new entry in their racing series coming this June. Dirt 4 will have rally cars racing across track and field, same as ever, while also bringing back vehicles missing from the series for years: buggies and trucks. The option for procedurally-generated tracks is an interesting addition too. 2015’s Dirt Rally was good stuff — “It’s like slamming your genitals in the door of a washing machine on a cotton cycle,” one of the sad dads off the telly might say * — so Codies expanding their scope sounds grand. Can A Real-World Car Lover Truly Dig Driving Games?

I like games. I like driving. But driving games? Not so much. Not since I could actually drive, at least. But in the name of natural science and fortnightly deadlines, I’m having another crack at it. As is my remit, I’m going heavy with the hardware. With the Laird Gaming Dungeon™ now operational, a top-notch driving-sim setup should provide for empirical exposition. Before that, however, please allow me to bother you with a broader theory of games that explains why driving sims have failed to fire my pleasure neurons in adulthood…

Dirrty Enough: Dirt Rally Skids Out Of Early Access

How dirty is dirty enough? Two Rs, says Christina Aguilera, and she’s a judge on The Voice so she should know. After seven months in Steam Early Access, skidding through mud and gyrating against pine trees, the racing game now known as Dirrt Rally [official site] has properly launched. It screeched out with a big update too, with a wintery track set in Sweden. Codemasters seem very proud of their snow physics. I’d expense a trip to roll around in the snow if I could too. Horace, do we have room in our budget for a trip to Sweden? It’s vital to my understanding of this news post.

Dirt Rally Update 0.8 Adds Finland Stages, New Cars

I’d like a future Dirt Rally [official site] update to add the ability to turn your engine off. Codemaster’s have focused their efforts on making cars which feel fun to throw around the game’s muddy rally tracks, but I’m bad at that. Instead I appreciate it for its hills, its snow, the way the headlights reflect off surfaces in the dark, and the forests which stretch off to the horizon. I don’t want to race around the latest update’s new Finland stages; I want to park in them. Watch a trailer below to breathe in the atmosphere for yourself.

No Jokes, Please: Dirt Rally Goes To Baumholder

The simultaneous announcement and Steam Early Access launch of Dirt Rally [official site] in April was the kind of surprise I’d thought Big Video Games had become incapable of pulling off – someone always squeals. Content updates are less of a surprise, as that’s sorta what Early Access is all about, but still just as welcome.

Five new cars are now squealing around an all-tarmac German track, offering a different style of race.

Dirt Rally Announced And In Early Access Right Now

Oh! This is unexpected. Codemasters have just announced Dirt Rally [Steam page] and the news comes with the unusual detail that the game is also out already via Steam Early Access. Although it’s got the Dirt name, Rally tosses out all the screeching gymkhana flash in favour of focusing on muddy roads, too-close trees and the feeling of your backwheels lurching perilously out of control. Trundle below for a launch trailer and some further details.
