Y’know, it occurred to me the other day that we had never really written about Club Penguin [official site], the kid-friendly MMO where you all have little penguin avatars. At most we’ve mentioned it in passing. But now Club Penguin is being retired (both from desktop and mobile) to make way for its mobile-only successor, Club Penguin Island, at the end of March. As part of the closing down party there’s an ADORABLE Easter Egg involving the long-fabled flipping of a previously unflippable iceberg. It’s so utterly charming! Read the rest of this entry »
Disney Infinity 2.0 would’ve been the stuff of dreams when I was a young’un: a game about Marvel superheroes where toys you buy actually become characters in the game. I’d point it out whenever I saw it in a shop window, try to get invited over by friends who had it, circle it in the Argos catalogue before Christmas, then receive something thoughtful but practical because the only video games we could afford were mid-’80s 10-in-1 consoles from car boot sales. Oh boo hoo, you big baby.
2.0 is out on PC now, following its console release in September, is what I’m trying to say.
Whenever I’m reminded that Disney Infinity exists, I’m amazed that it doesn’t have a terrifying claim on parental wallets worldwide. The $75 starter pack that is the gateway into the console toybox has racked up more than three million sales and while the PC version has an initial free download and doesn’t support the physical figures that plug into the game, Skylanders-style, it is otherwise almost equivalent to the console versions. Purchasing the characters online as digital downloads does detract from the urge to collect ’em all but also means additional PC content is a little cheaper.
In Autumn, Infinity is expanding and the 2.0 release will contain twenty new characters plucked from the Marvel universe. Millions of wallets suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced. Perhaps that quote will actually be relevant when Disney unleash Infinity 3.0 to coincide with the cinematic release of Star Wars VII: The Generation Gap.
Cars might have ruined the visual comprehension of cartoon cars for a generation of kids, but there’s no denying its popularity with tiny humans. A wise choice, therefore, to make it one of the first unveils for Disney’s new game universe online thing. Disney Infinity is a hybird digital and real-world toy system, with different toy sets unlocking stuff in the ‘Toy Box’ area in-game. Cars, as you can see below, is one such set. And hey, it actually looks pretty good. Take a look.
Via VG247 I spy a new trailer for Blackrock’s action-tastic racer Split/Second, in which you can blow up the world (or thereabouts) to win your race. “The city is your weapon,” they say, which sound about right to me. And look at those explosions! Hot damn. This looks like a special grade of fun that the fun-dealers usually keep for themselves. The bastards.
