Rebellion buys Oliver Twins studio Radiant Worlds

Rebellion, the makers of Sniper Elite (not to mention the owners of the comic 2000 AD), have expanded their business portfolio once more. It’s bound in black leather with red contrast stitching, has built-in pen holder and a cartridge pouch, and… oh, yes, they’ve bought Radiant Worlds. That studio name might not be familiar, as they’d only worked on a doomed Minecraftbut MMO named SkySaga: Infinite Isles, but you might know two of the names behind the studio: Andrew and Philip Oliver. You know, the Oliver Twins, them lads in the ’80s UK games scene who span an egg so hard it became Dizzy. Well, now Radiant Worlds is part of Rebellion and working on Rebellion’s games. Perusing The Main Menu At The In-Game Cafe

Hey, good to see ya, how ya doin’? Take a seat anyplace you like – we got window seats, we got booths, we got stools over here at the counter. I’d keep shy of the table just at the back there – it’s reserved, on a strictly unofficial basis, and the guy who plants hisself there most days ain’t exactly particular about whose keister he puts his boot into, if you catch my drift.

Have You Played… Fast Food Dizzy?

Have You Played? is an endless stream of game recommendations. One a day, every day of the year, perhaps for all time.

Dizzy is an egg. I had an egg for breakfast this morning. Therefore, Dizzy must be food. In Fast Food Dizzy, he is trying to eat all of the other food. What does it all mean? That the food chain coils back on itself and becomes the oroborous and that we are all somebody’s breakfast in the end.

Eggscavated: Wonderland Dizzy Found And Freed

You might scoff at the rude ‘tude of ’90s video game mascots, but ’80s icons were weirder. Consider Dizzy, a puzzle-platforming egg with a face, hands, and feet. You may find it difficult to believe, but Dizzy was once so big that he (or a chap in a Dizzy costume) was lined up to present the 1989 Smash Hits Poll Winners Party – and pulled out after being mobbed backstage by a group of egg-crazed teenagers.

Steel yourselves, girls: Dizzy is back. His creators Philip and Andrew Oliver have rediscovered a Dizzy game they never finished, Wonderland Dizzy [official site], and released it finished-up for free.

No Yolk: Dizzy’s Back

I'm going to celebrate by listening to some Shellac

Update: Confirmed as Dizzy: Prince of the Yolkfolk, but for iOS and Android only. Bah!

Dizzy: a smiling egg-man controlled in assorted platform-puzzle-adventures by old European men such as I back in the late 80s and early 90s. For some reason (perhaps because he wasn’t the figurehead of a console company; perhaps because the key devs left to start their own company; perhaps because he was, well, an egg), Codemasters’ one-time flagship character didn’t really survive into the 21st Century. But now the delicate wee fellow is apparently due for a return. What kind of return is a mystery: all we have to go on is this none-too-cryptic image at the brow-rasingly-named eggcitingnews.com. Are you willing to shell out for the yolkfolks’ return?
