DoomRL becomes DRL and goes open source after legal warning from ZeniMax

The creator of hell-inspired roguelike DoomRL [official site] has changed the game’s name to DRL and shared its source code with the world after receiving a legal warning from ZeniMax, the owners of the Doom trademark, late last week. The letter had demanded the removal of “all ZeniMax trademarks from meta tags, keywords, media, and other visible or concealed text that are connected to [the] website”. And that’s why the website now looks like this.

DoomRL dev receives legal letter from ZeniMax

Fan projects based on existing games are always at risk from publishers and other trademark holders who might decide to take legal action, removing a piece of media from distribution, or taking other less punitive measures. There’s a line of thought I see circulating among game journos whenever a decent fan project starts to receive attention: “Writing about this is worthwhile because it is great, but we would be summoning the Eye of Sauron.”

DoomRL [official site], the Doom-themed roguelike, has had press attention for years now, but ZeniMax hadn’t made any legal demands in relation to the Doom trademark until late last night. Now they have, but it doesn’t look like the end of the world.

DoomRL ‘spiritual successor’ Jupiter Hell hits Kickstarter

“Doom but as a Roguelike” might sound like just a joke but DoomRL is a cracking game. It’s top-down, turn-based, grid-based, and… still surprisingly Doom-feely. Good stuff. Creator Kornel Kisielewicz and his ChaosForge team have been working on follow-up Jupiter Hell [official site], which boasts such fancy features as 3D graphics if you want ’em (or good ‘ol ASCII if you don’t), for a few years and now they’ve turned to Kickstarter to help finish development. So it’s… a Doom Roguelike clone Roguelike – a Doomlikedoomroguelikelikeroguelike? This terminology gets so complicated. Read the rest of this entry »

Doom Over The World: The 2015 Cacowards

Ask me “Alice! You like Doom and player-made stuff and player-made Doom stuff – what’s this year’s best?” and I’ll sheepishly reply “Ah, heck, I don’t play nearly enough to know. The selfie mod was funny, wasn’t it? With the selfie stick? Right? Jokes? Oh, hey, did you see the Doom Mixtape? Look I need to…” Don’t ask me that.

Some people who do play an awful lot of Doom, mind, are the Doomworld lot. Every year on December 10th – Doom’s birthday, it’s now 22 years old – they hand out gleaming Cacowards to their favourite new Doomy creations, which are often a handy pointer towards good and fun new things. This year’s results are in, so go a-Dooming!

Vacating Mars: Jupiter Hell Is The DoomRL sequel

I'm still holding out for Doom IRL

DoomRL (which we’ve written on often) was one of many clever attempts to adapt The Grandaddy Of Murder Sims to other genres, and also one of the most successful, especially in terms of restoring a certain element of creeping menace to a game that’s like a cartoon played at lightspeed nowadays. The RL stands for roguelike, which stands for lots and lots of caution, tension and death.

Devs ChaosForge have now announced Jupiter Hell, a spiritual successor that’s going out of its way not to mention Mars or words that rhyme with ‘broom’.

If Girl Talk Made Games: DoomRL And GMDoom

Together at last!
I have two, TWO, things about Doom to show you. This is like being an archaeologist in the jungle and discovering a skellington, but the skellington’s heart is still beating and then, oh noes, there’s a ball chasing me and I’ve dropped my hat and give me back my whip Alfred Molina! This Doom reporting is tough work. No wonder all the journalists from that period are scarred and flinch whenever they hear the game’s name. For the brave, there are two Doom mashups that you should be excited about.

DoomRL Is Now 90% Handsomer

I'm psychically imprinting the Doom soundtrack into your head via this Alt-Text

Tiles are the most exciting thing you can say to a rogue-like likerer: it means that their most-liked of genres has been updated with graphics. DoomRL’s graphical update has been hanging around since 2007, when Spelunky maker Derek Yu promised he’d add them. Now, in 2012, the year of the Mayan apocalypse, he’s finally done it. I’m not saying that this update, which also brings with it some music and mouse options, is the harbinger, the beginning of the end of the age of man, the time we’ve all known was coming yet did nothing to prevent, the year everything changes and the world fights back. No, really, I’m not saying that at all: you’re twisting my words horribly. Stop it! What I am saying is DoomRL has had its biggest update. It’s free, it’s cute in a ‘aw look at him shotgun those flying eye-balls’ kinda way, and there’s a nice video of it below. I’ve no idea where you got that apocalypse stuff from, weirdo.
