Will There Ever Be A Space Game I Want To Play?

I have always wanted a space game to play. The boundless stretches, galaxies to explore, the awe-inspiring magic of flying a spaceship – the concept sings to me like a siren. And yet, as I wade gleefully into the waters to follow the source of that melody, I drown every single time. Every single time the game is a mad mess of fiddling and worrying and menus and doing taxes and buying ore and achingly annoying combat of flying in crazed circles trying to get to an angle from which I can shoot spaceships that seem always able to shoot at me. Every single time it’s a chore, not a pleasure. It’s space shopping. I flat-out don’t want space shopping.

Yesterday Graham said I should look at last November’s Rebel Galaxy [official site], because it was from some of the Torchlight team. I remind myself of the screenshots, and say to him, “Is it strategy, Graham? IS IT?” He promises me it isn’t. So, is this the space game for me?

Wot I Think: Rebel Galaxy

Rebel Galaxy [official site] came storming out of warp recently and has been threatening people with its giant starboard cannons, telling them to come and join the space cowboy adventure. We told Brendan to get on board, or else. Let’s see wot he thinks.

You Can’t Take The Sky From Me: Rebel Galaxy Released

Blammo!

Speaking of Back to the Future, how about that future where we’re all living in shades of grey as space captains on the outskirts of space society? Sorry, today I’m in the unofficial competition with every other wordperson to link a story to BTTF Day in the most tenuous way we can.

That idea is real, though: it’s Rebel Galaxy [official site]. The space scoundrel ’em up launched last night, offering procedurally-generated cosmos to explore, trade in, and maybe – just maybe – double-cross, cheat, and destroy folks with broadside combat. I haven’t had a play yet myself but it looks a bit Freelancer-ish and Firefly-y, yeah?

Damned rebellious kids!

Wait, hang on, two founding members of Torchlight devs Runic have been working on what they call a “swashbuckling space adventure” with spaceship action and trading and exploration and antics in a procedurally-generated galaxy, and we’ve only posted about it once? That won’t do at all! Now’s a good time to catch up, as Rebel Galaxy [official site] has just received a release date: October 20th.

Rebel Galaxy: Ex-Torchlight Folks’ Space Sandbox

Pew pew.

A crafty crew of space-outlaws can scrape by on the edge of known space by trading, stealing, scavenging, negotiating, exploring, and fighting as long as they have a reliable spaceship, popular media tells me. Now imagine such an outfit of scamps in control of a destroyer bristling with guns. That’s Rebel Galaxy, the first game from Travis Baldree and Erich Schaefer’s new outfit Double Damage Games. You might remember those two as founding members of Torchlight devs Runic Games, or from Mythos and Diablo respectively before that. This isn’t quite an action-RPG, though.
