Monitor Magic: What Games Look Like At 21:9

I keep banging on about it to all who will listen, but like a mid-life-crisiseer and their ridiculous sports car, I am increasingly in love with my new ultrawide monitor. I had to use a standard 1080p one recently – oh the humanity! – and felt as though I was trapped inside a tiny box. 21:9 is the only way to play. At least until 32:9 arrives and I decide that of course I cannot live without that. CONSUME CONSUME CONSUME. Genuinely though, ultrawide is lovely: it really brings games to life.

In Celebration Of Perfectly Average Action Games

We don’t do scores on RPS, but sometimes we mourn for the inability to deploy a 7/10. The ur-score, the most double-edged of critical swords, the good but not great, the better than it deserves to be, the guilty pleasure, the bungled aspiration, the knows exactly what it is, the straight down the line. One score that can mean so much.

There is one particular type of 7/10 game that heralds joy, not disappointment: the solid, maybe ever so slightly wonky action game with no interest in being anything more than a solid action game.

EDF! EDF! Earth Defense Force 4.1 On Steam Monday

Colossal ants, spiders, bees, robots, and UFOs from outer space will be swarming PC from Monday in Earth Defense Force 4.1 The Shadow of New Despair [official site]. I know – what a name! It’s a revamped version of Earth Defense Force 2025, which isn’t nearly as good a name. We’ve only seen EDF on PC once before so the novelty hasn’t worn off for me and yeah, I think I am up for rampaging around Japan shooting massive hordes of space-monsters with my pals.
