ModDB’s Mod of the Year winner announced

If I was a betting man, I’d have put money on Enderal, the vast Skyrim total conversion, winning the public vote for ModDB‘s mod of the year. That I’d have lost all that money is why I’m not a betting man. Enderal came second behind Stalker: Call of Chernobyl, a similarly vast total conversion for the enduring Stalker: Call of Pripyat. Skyrim megamod Enderal getting own expansion

SureAI’s huge Skyrim total conversion Enderal: The Shards of Order [official site], which builds a whole new game upon Bethesda’s foundations, is getting an expansion of its own in 2017. Enderal’s launch this year was dang impressive – “play this excellent mod,” said Cobbo – but a few bits were cut from the initial release. Now the game’s lead writer has picked those up off the cutting room floor and is polishing them up for Forgotten Stories with 10-20 hours of new quests and new quest lines, along with a few other nice odds and ends. Have a peek in the announcement trailer below. Read the rest of this entry »

Best mods of 2016

If you look beyond the celebrity death epidemic, killer clowns, political turmoil and the fact the Great British Bake Off parted ways with the BBC, 2016 has actually been a pretty great year. Well, it’s at least been a pretty great year for videogames, and a pretty great year for game modifications.

As you’ve probably spied elsewhere on the coveted pages of RPS of late, we’re list-entry deep in Best Of season which means I’m now here to present you with this year’s best PC mods. In no particular order, the following collection gathers the best modifications that have either been launched or have been significantly updated in 2016. While our previous Best Mods lists have tended to focus on specific games, this ‘un looks at the specific mods themselves – often considering those which provide extra mileage for some of our favourite games.

Naturally I’ve almost certainly missed your personal favourite, so please feel free to shout your own mods of choice at me in the comments at the foot of this article.

The RPG Scrollbars: A Trip To Enderal

Even by RPG standards, Skyrim total conversion Enderal [official site] deserves some kind of prize for a depressing opening. A happy summer’s day twisting into a nightmare of dead family, fire and flesh. From there, starving aboard a ship with a friend, all in the hope of finding a new life across the sea. Discovery. Murder. Near drowning. Waking up to find that you have special magic powers… and almost as quickly that in Enderal, that’s pretty much the local equivalent of coming down with the clap. An illness to be treated, which will probably lead to insanity and an agonising death. Anything else, world?

On second thoughts, better not ask. Just play this excellent mod.

Enderal, The Huge Skyrim Mod, Is Out Now

A final version of Enderal: The Shards of Order [official site] has been completed and can be downloaded for free now. While ‘Enderal’ sounds like it could be something made by a United States pharmaceutical company, it is actually a massive total conversion mod for Skyrim, not just adding new weapons or turning it into a survival game, but creating a whole new RPG using the raw materials of its parent. A German version was recently released but now you can get it in English. Disgusting, verminous English.

Enderal, A Skyrim Total Conversion Mod, Due Next Month

Total conversions are easily the most ambitious mods ever created, which is why so few of them ever actually get finished. They don’t just add some new armor sets or tweak a game mechanic or two, they build entire games. But, amazingly, Enderal [official site], a completely new RPG built in Skyrim’s engine, is going to be one of the few that actually sees the light of day. Thanks to a tweet from its developer, we now know Enderal will be arriving at the beginning of July, first in German and then in English a week or two later.

Skyrim Mod Enderal’s Trailer Explores The Undercity

The developers of upcoming Skyrim total conversion Enderal: The Shards of Order have released a new trailer, showing off a location dubbed the Undercity.

I’m curious: just how does one acquire a Shard of Order? First you’d need to shatter an intangible concept, which seems like a lot of hard work, even for a fantasy big boss. Ordering a Shard seems a lot easier: you can just have one custom-made by any number of Skyrim merchants. Enderal, whoever you are – you have my number. Call me.
