The closest I’ve come to an altercation with a border guard was on a family holiday. We’d arrived at Philadelphia airport, and the American at the desk was deeply suspicious about my parents lack of a shared surname. He demanded to know why they weren’t married, prompting my dad to explain that while he was in favour of it for tax reasons, neither of them really believed in the importance of marriage as a cultural or religious institution. We made it through, just.

Who knows how that conversation would have played out in Arstotzka, the fictitious setting of Papers, Please and its newly released official short film. Developer Lucas Pope was involved with the writing, which helps explain how it manages to capture the spirit of the game so effectively. If you didn’t get your fill of tortuous decisions packed with moral angst and grim ramifications from Papers, Please itself, then this should do the trick.

It’s A Bit Good: Left 4 Dead – Impulse 76

Dear me, I wasn’t paying attention yesterday. Remember that we told you about the excellent trailer for a Left 4 Dead fan-made film, that to my eyes at least look Hollywood scale? The full 10 minute version is now there for you to see. And by “there”, I mean, “just below these words”. It really is remarkably good.

Crikey: Left 4 Dead Fan Film Trailer

Yeah, just something they knocked together in a weekend.

It’s official – I can no longer tell the difference between fan film trailers and Hollywood trailers. The extraordinary snippet of film below is a teaser for a soon-to-be-released fan movie of Left 4 Dead. But I challenge you to spot the joins here. I mean, unless they’ve a person stood on someone else’s shoulders, holding a third man upside down by his trouser legs, it seems like they have a crane. Are you still a fan film if you’ve got a crane? Surely you’re just a film at that point? In other words: wow.

Fan Movie-Off: Fallout Nuka Break

Beyond Black Mesa turned up to a mixed reception last week, and due to taking a few… liberties led to internet troubadours suggesting what they felt were superior fan-films. Here’s one of them, set in the Fallout 3 universe. As well as being built on a whole lot of love, attention to detail and – gasp! – decent acting, it starts with a heartfelt plea that Bethesda doesn’t sue them, which I think we can all get behind. Recreated weapons, costumes, crumbled bridges and 50s ad reels await…
