Best graphics card 2020: The best AMD and Nvidia GPUs for gaming

It's been a busy 12 months in the race to become to next best graphics card, and 2020 doesn't show any signs of it stopping, either. While we've had nearly all the best graphics cards we're likely to see from Nvidia this generation, AMD are just getting started, and will be releasing their hotly anticipated 1080p best graphics card contender, the RX 5600 XT, next…

Star Trek: Judgment Rites is a joyful anachronism from an impossible past

The shock doesn't wear off. Before you all departed for Christmas shore leave, I wrote about returning to the peculiarly named Star Trek: 25th Anniversary Edition, wherein I expressed the complete bizarreness that comes with hearing the original cast of the TV show reunited to voice, of all things, a point-and-click adventure game. Everything about that just seems so utterly anachronistic today, and yet in…

Have You Played… Warcraft 2?

A lot of my HYP entries end up being games wot I watched my big brother play and then cautiously experimented with myself. Warcraft II (colon Tides Of Darkness) was, to an eight year old, amazing, especially with the Beyond The Dark Portal expansion. I don't much dip my toe in the RTS genre these days, but when I was little they were the majority…

The Sunday Papers

Sundays are for buying drywall filler, then hoping it will hide the holes you weren't supposed to make before Monday's inspectors can subtract an unreasonable amount from your deposit. Hurray for renting! Hurray for the best writing about videogames from the past week. For The New Yorker, Jamil Jan Kochai wrote about playing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. It's a reality bleeding, perspective-broadening…

Monster Hunter: World performance guide: Get your PC Iceborne ready

Monster Hunter: World is one of the biggest games on PC right now, and it's just got even bigger with the launch of its giant Iceborne expansion. So, if you're been thinking about jumping into Capcom's dinosaur-hunting / hat-making sim, but aren't sure if your graphics card can run it properly, then have a read of my Monster Hunter: World PC performance guide below. Here,…

Behind the scenes of the games that brought Pokémon to PC before Temtem

Although Switch owners got not just one, but a pair of new Pokémon games this year, folks who are committed to PC gaming got the short end of the Farfetch’d leek. Temtem, an MMO game openly - almost brazenly - inspired by Pokémon is out later this month, but you don't have to wait until the 21st of January to play a Pokalike. See, PC…

AO Tennis 2 review

Dennis Brawl was crap at tennis. She could barely tell her flats from her tennis elbow, which she had not played nearly enough to develop, but nevertheless felt afflicted by on a deeper, more spiritual level. Shots sailed passed her unwitting eyeballs. Lobs confused her, spin perplexed. Nobody would explain what an Inside Out was. I wish I could tell you she got better. That…

The 8 coldest monsters in PC games

I have spent the winter holidays making a list, checking it twice, trying to find who is naughty on ice. But unlike the popular red-clad demon of the north, my list is reserved for terrors, demons and critters larger than 4 feet tall. I’m talking about cold monsters. They’re very chic this week. You see, while Nic has been battering majestic species of endangered giganto-moose…

Have You Played… Westerado: Double Barreled?

I don’t have the facts to back this up, but it is unlikely Westerado had the same budget and team size as Red Dead Redemption 2. Not to go all Digital Foundry on you, but I estimate that there are more graphics in one of Rockstar’s physics-enabled horse gonads then there are in the entirety of Ostrich Banditos’ virtual frontier. And yet, for my money,…

Forget Tiny Living, in The Sims 4 builders have achieved greatness with Grand Designs

Earlier this week, EA revealed the new Tiny Living Stuff Pack for The Sims 4. It allows players to build cosy little homes, limited to just 100 floor tiles in size, and adds new little home items like a bookshelf that has an inbuilt TV. Plus: cosy knits! All very lovely. But the creativity of The Sims' community has never been confined by size -…

Monster Hunter World Iceborne Brachydios guide

Look, there are a lot of silly designs in Monster Hunter World Iceborne, but I still think that this hench lad with a rockabilly mohawk takes the biscuit. Brachydios doesn't just wear that protruding thing on his bonce for show though, as secreted within is an explosive slime that it uses to coat its fists, before pummelling the ground like a toddler having a massive…

Sayonara Wild Hearts review

Sayonara Wild Hearts is a sort of rhythm action arcade game, and as I played I kept getting flavours of different things. In terms of video games I felt Thumper, then (less obviously) Fe, plus SuperHot and Persona 5. Oh, and that mine cart level in the first Harry Potter game. But Sayonara wild hearts is also the drag race scene in Grease, the "Get…

Monster Hunter World Iceborne Coral Pukei-Pukei guide

I always thought the Pukei-Pukei was a monster that didn't live up to its potential, but Monster Hunter World Iceborne's Coral Pukei-Pukei only served to highlight just how dangerous it could have been even further. Its tail can eject gallons of water in a jet stream. This makes the Coral Pukei-Pukei different enough to warrant needing its own strategies to defeat it.

Monster Hunter World Iceborne Nightshade Paolumu guide

How do you make one of the more annoying large monsters from the main game more annoying in Monster Hunter World Iceborne? How about giving it a sleep inducing gas that it can waft around like a bad smell. It makes Paolumu's hard-hitting, but otherwise very avoidable attacks a lot more dangerous. But as long as you avoid the gas clouds, you should be fine.

Monster Hunter World Iceborne Viper Tobi-Kadachi guide

The original Tobi-Kadachi was one of the first monsters you faced in Monster Hunter World, but Iceborne has the Viper Tobi-Kadachi. It differs from its purely lightning cousin in its more reptilian appearance. It can also inflict one of three different status ailments that can easily put you in a vulnerable position.

Monster Hunter World Iceborne Banbaro guide

The first monster that Capcom showed us for Monster Hunter World Iceborne was the Banbaro - a stag-like wyvern that is generally quite peaceful. However, if you cross it, it will use its antlers to scoop up boulders and trees to charge at you relentlessly. Banbaro can therefore be a bit of a handful to hunt if you're going in unprepared.
