Lamplight City promises a detective story where you can screw up everything

After the delights of sci-fi adventure Shardlight we were always going to be interested in what Francisco Gonzalez did next. Now having played a small section of his follow-up, Lamplight City, I can confirm such anticipation is well merited. This is a steampunk detective adventure where messing everything up is an entirely legitimate way to play.

Shardlight dev’s steampunk-y adventure Lamplight City still looks neat

A new calendar year means games which seemed impossibly far away are now really quite close. Here comes Lamplight City, the next adventure game from the creator of A Golden Wake and Shardlight, flexing and doing some warm-up marketing stretches with a new trailer ahead of its launch in a few months. After tripping through the roaring ’30s then our dystopian future, Francisco Gonzalez is off to the steampunk-y 19th century in Lamplight City, where we’ll play as a private investigator solving cases while hunting for his former partner’s murderer. Golden Wake Dev’s New Steampunk-ish Adventure Game

Grundislav Games, the maker of A Golden Wake, has announced its next adventure game, Lamplight City [official site]. Period Adventuring: A Golden Wake’s Demo

He might not think so, but I do. About you. That's right.

Ah, the 1920s! A decade of good times for those riding high on the great waves of cash crashing upon the real estate and banking industries. Were I a hateful thing, I’d crack An Hilarious Joke about current events. Adventure game A Golden Wake is slightly less fun, as Alfie Banks’ real estate dreams get tangled up in the mob. It’s made by Grundislav Games, who you might know from the Ben Jordan games. This is Grundislav’s first commercial game, signed up by the publishing arm of Wadjet Eye Games games (it’s founder Dave Gilbert’s left arm, I believe).

Wadjet tend to have a pretty good… eye for adventure games (eh? eh?), but you can jump on in and judge this for yourself now a demo’s out.

A Golden Wake Is Blackwell Pub’s Roaring ’20s Adventure

People need to always dress like this again.

OK, OK, let me see if I can hack my way through a jungle of redundancy to get this all straight: A Golden Wake is a golden-age-style adventure set in America’s own golden age that sees you completing goal(d)s to strike it rich (probably in gold) even as the mob and Great Depression loom. Whew. I suppose I could’ve just said, “American Roaring Twenties point-and-click adventure with shades of Gatsby,” but where’s the fun in that? Trailer below.
