Road Trip ‘Em Up Jalopy Screeches Into Early Access

PRESS ALL THOSE BUTTONS!

Road trip game Jalopy [official site] has launched onto Steam Early Access, ready to pootle around a portion of Europe. We’ve been cooing and making kissy faces at it since since it was called Hac, winking and waggling our eyebrows as developer Minskworks showed off minute first-person interactions like packing supplies, cleaning the car, shopping, and refuelling. So naturally I entirely missed that Jalopy’s Early Access launch was on Friday.

Procedural Road Trip Sim Jalopy Drives On Greenlight

I can’t remember the last time I was so excited about a game that damn near no one else has heard of. RPS has been doing its best to rev your engines. Over the course of Jalopy‘s [official site] (née Hac) development so far, we’ve written four posts about the procedurally generated road trip, Alice and I racing one another to share the latest GIFs of its Yugoslavia-inspired landscapes, first-person shopping trips and flat tire changes.

Here’s another attempt: Jalopy is now on Steam Greenlight with two new trailers to enjoy.

Road Trip Driving Game Hac Now Called Jalopy

We’ve written about Hac [official site] a number of times before, celebrating the detail and development of a driving game about taking a road trip across a procedural eastern europe. Now two things have changed: Hac has changed its name to Jalopy in advance of a planned 2016 release, and we have better support for embedding GIFs now.

Packing, Refuelling, And Shopping In Another Hac Gifbomb

Whenever I see Hac [dev blog], I want to fiddle. The solo developer of MinskWorks is filling his first-person road trip game with so many delightful little interactions, so many little objects you can pick up, fill up, use, buy, or pack away in case you might need them later.

Last time I dropped a Hac gifbomb on you, we cooed over things like packing your car’s boot or giving it a good scrub with a mop and bucket after driving through muddy puddles. This time, ooh come look at its shopping (warning: many megabytes of animated gifs).

Cleaning Cars And Packing Boxes: The Fiddly Bits Of Hac

Drive on.

Your car’s dirty in a driving game? Press the wipers button. Pssh. Hac makes it charmingly more complicated. You’ll also want to press the button to spray water or you might just smear dirt across your windows. And it’ll let you get out your car and clean mud off the body with a bucket and sponge. And you might need to top up the wiper water with a bottle which you yourself filled from a tap then packed into your car. It’s a fascinating road trip game and I’m delighted by its steady stream of dev blog posts revealing more tiny new interactions. I think you might be too.

(Warning: this post is heaving with animated gifs, so not one for slow computers or connections.)

2 Slow 2 Ponderous: Hac Is Gone Home In A Car

How soon is too soon to write about a new game? Hac has been in development for a few weeks and was only today posted about by its developer on the TIGSource forums. That’s the mark against it. In the ‘pros’ column is that it’s a “first-person game about driving 1990’s Europe, with a focus on meaningful interactions and a ‘true’ driving experience”, that it aims to become “Euro Truck Simulator with a narrative”, and that there’s already a super-duper-early build to try out.

There’s little I’d like more than to tool around EFIGS countryside to the sound of jangling keys and the click-clack of mechanical levers, so I recorded a quick video of me fiddling with what’s in the current build.
