Halo Wars: Definitive Edition trundles onto Steam today

I went for the word “trundles” in the headline because “warthogs” isn’t really a verb and I don’t know if I have the literary capital to pull off that particular innovation. Sorry, everyone. Anyway, a spruced-up version of Halo Wars the First has come out on Steam, allowing many to play the spin-off’d RTS for the first time. Previously it was only available as an inclusion on a special edition of the recent Halo Wars 2, which is a Windows 10-only affair as far as PCs are concerned. This is good news nonetheless, but there is a multiplayer catch. You can’t play with Windows Store chums.

Hayla, oh hayla shayla: Halo Wars 2 demo released

You’re read Wot Fraser Brown thinks of Halo Wars 2 [official site], right? That Creative Assembly’s real-time strategy game set in the world of John Torode-177, the Master Chef, is a bit weird as an RTS designed for a console but quite fun all the same? Something that might be worth a crack to see if you take a fancy to it. Don’t go spending £50 to find out (fifty quid!) as it now has a demo out on the Windows Store. For Windows 10 only, of course. Wot I Think: Halo Wars 2

Halo Wars 2 [official site] is undeniably a console RTS – a rare, exotic bird that looks a bit weird and could only have evolved on an island split off from the rest of the world. Removing it from its natural habitat and introducing it to the PC ecosystem, where its evolutionary niche isn’t quite so niche, might seem a little cruel and ill-conceived. But while it’s certainly not a perfect fit, it’s striking and, more often than not, quite a lot of fun. Here’s wot I think.

It’s it’s a Spartan Blitz: Halo Wars 2 open beta live

Halo Wars 2 [official site], the RTS spin-off from Microsoft’s Xbox FPS, is now in open beta on Windows 10. Until January 30th, all Tenners can check out the multiplayer ‘Blitz’ mode for free. That’s nice, as Edwin Evans-Thirlwell says Blitz is one of the more interesting parts of Hwar so hey, good for us. Blitz is a team-based mode where, rather than building armies and bases, units and powers are doled out by cards from a deck you build. Yeah I’m up for that. Read the rest of this entry »

Halo Wars 2’s Blitz Mode could be its salvation

This is Atriox, your chief adversary. He leads a rogue Covenant faction, the banished – the remaining Covenant races are now at peace with humanity following the events of Halo 2. I know these things because I once had to write a 5000-word Halo timeline.

I was all set to thoroughly dismiss Halo Wars 2 [official site], before I joined Microsoft for a spot of top-down Warthog-baiting earlier in the month, and I’m still not completely convinced. Last year’s Xbox One beta suggested yet another Halo game intent on rebottling the lightning of a departed era – in this case, that fleeting, Quixotic period when the idea of RTS on console sounded like cash in the bank.

Much of what made the original Halo Wars work so well on Xbox 360 has been preserved – the snappy, colourful visual design, the stripped-down resource and research aspects, the adroit translation of Halo’s alien Covenant and human UNSC factions into the language of an Age of Empires spin-off. Startlingly little has been added or changed, whether you’re talking about new units or a fresh approach to the typically leaden business of storytelling in a strategy game. This is exactly what many fans are hoping for, I’m sure, but given Creative Assembly’s success with the Warhammer license and Alien: Isolation, it’s hard not to wish for a shade more, well, magic.

The PC games of 2017 mega-preview

As Old Father Time grabs his sickle and prepares to take ailing 2016 around the back of the barn for a big sleep, we’re looking to the future. The mewling pup that goes by the name 2017 will come into the world soon and we must prepare ourselves for its arrival. Here at RPS, our preparations come in the form of this enormous preview feature, which contains details on more than a hundred of the exciting games that are coming our way over the next twelve months. 2016 was a good one – in the world of games at least – but, ever the optimists, we’re hoping next year will be even better.

Halo Wars 2 Dev Diary Explores Threatening New Villain

I’ve always been a big fan of the universe that the Halo games are set in, and with Halo Wars 2 [official site] headed our way in February of next year, I’m keen on gleaning as much information about its story as possible. That’s good for me, because Microsoft have released a short video documentary detailing some of the finer points of the story with an added emphasis on the villain who will be tying everything together.

The Creative Assembly’s Halo Wars 2 Due In Feb 2017

Total War developers The Creative Assembly have stuck their thumb into Microsoft’s gamepie and pulled out a technoplum, by which I of course mean that they’re making Halo Wars 2 [official site] for Windows 10. Halo Wars is a real-time strategy spin-off from the Xbox’s flagship FPS, with the first one released on Xbox 360 in 2009. Well, now this sequel has a release date: February 21st, 2017. That’s a bit later than autumn 2016 date mentioned before. Still, it’ll cheer you up, I can show you moving pictures:

Halo Wars 2 Coming From The Creative Assembly

Here’s an interesting one: Halo Wars 2, which is the sequel to original the Halo-centric RTS game that came to 360 systems in 2009, is coming to both Xbox One and Windows 10 next autumn.

The original Halo Wars was the final game from Age of Empires creators Ensemble Studios, but this sequel is being made by another lot of RTS veterans: Total War folks The Creative Assembly (with help from Halo caretakers 343 Industries). Microsoft today announced the game with a teaser trailer, which you can watch below.
